youth violence, bullying, recognizing changes in attitude and
behavior that affects youths mentally, physically, socially
emotionally and educationally.
Marine Boot Camp has been described in many books and movies over the years and in many cases not favorably. The author is especially qualified to write about this subject because he went through a Boot Camp at Parris Island in 1953 and returned as the commanding officer of the Recruit Training Regiment in 1982 after spending a significant amount of time leading Marines as an officer and noncommissioned officer. The author goes into great detail explaining his theory about why abuse occurs. He also describes the quality of the drill instructors and their background. The author places the reader in the environment by telling stories about what is actually happening throughout the training cycle. He explains why more supervision or regulations will not eliminate abuse, but only by changing attitudes will that happen. His style of working with the drill instructors and junior officers takes the reader through the events. A totally new approach of stress management was implemented with superb results. Experts in conditioning and psychology were used in an effort to improve the production of basic Marines and reports from the operating forces supported the end results. The author spent most of his time out of the office observing training and speaking with recruits and drill instructors. Many of the changes that occurred were suggested by the drill instructors during these informal talks. Some of the changes that did occur are listed near the end of the book. Many of them remain in effect today while others have been overcome by time.

Calico Dance, Escape to Sweden is a book about the life of an hypothetical family as they face the terrors of the Thirty Years' War in their homeland. In the German state of Hesse, where they live, uprisings of soldiers and peasants take their toll upon their home and family. Their house is burned and land taken. This family flees for their lives as an invading army threatens their existence, because they refuse to give up their Calvinist faith to return to the "Mother Church," which their forefathers separated from during the Reformation. The year 1631 is the book's focus, soon after the King of Sweden has invaded the German countryside. This family, and particularly their son John, are so impressed by the Protestant king and his army, they become followers, trusting him and his army to protect their Protestant cause, even as they flee their homeland to head north. In this historical fiction novel, the son joins the Swedish army and becomes a Swedish citizen while still on German soil. His example soon becomes a model for the family, including the two daughters, Karin and Jutte (You'ta), who are wandering nomads, homeless and looking for a peaceful and meaningful solution for their future. In their escape north, this family meets others who are also on the run. Another family, who have also experienced much the same terror as our hypothetical family, joins them along the trail for a couple of days. This caravan of two families escaping north has a surprise intruder one night. He is a runaway pikeman who couldn't take the horror of the war any longer. He is a traitor to his army and after a tense robbery attempt upon these families, he becomes their friend, sharing and helping in their escape. Our fictional family finally decides to become Swedes themselves and continue their trek to Rostock, a Baltic seaport in north Germany. It is here that they find help to secure a passage to Sweden, along with their son, who will serve in the Swedish army there.
In recent years, there has been a surge in social movement theorizing known as the contentious politics approach to studying political protest activity. In 2002, a conference sponsored by the Collective Behavior and Social Movements Section of the American Sociological Association was held at the University of Notre Dame to consider, in part, this development in field. But the conference organizers also wanted to consider more broadly what we collectively consider to be social movement research and theorizing. In part, this means moving beyond a state-centered view of contentious politics and toward a more open definition of what might be fruitfully examined by social movement theories - and in turn what might inform those theories even as we use then in more traditional social movement arenas. This volume represents some of the fruits of that conference and includes four sections that defines social movement authorities challenges beyond state targets, expands our notions of what constitutes repression of social movement activity, examines challenges to cultural authorities and processes, and illustrates the broader notions of authority challenge in three case studies of corporate systems. With this volume, "Research in Social Movements, Conflict and Change" celebrates its 25th anniversary and a history of publishing important, leading edge research and theorizing in the areas pf protest, social conflict, and political change.
The declining influence of the superpowers in key regions of the world has permitted states such as Israel, in the Middle East and India, in South Asia, to seek geopolitical influence. This study explores the ways in which aspiring regional hegemons view threats to their aspirations and respond to these threats. The contributors analyze important t
The bitter U.S. experience in Vietnam and the pain inflicted on theSoviet Union by its Afghanistan adventure have caused Washington andMoscow to rethink the costs and benefits of unilateral military interventionon behalf of threatened clients, especially in the third world. Also, asthe Cold War winds down, the crusading spirit that has driven superpowercompetition since the end of World War II appears increasingly anachronistic.Expenditures by the superpowers in pursuit of military superiority,or even to ensure parity, are now criticized for the security theydo not provide or for detracting from economic growth. The lattercriticism has grown in importance as the U.S. economy has confrontednew challenges from Japan and Germany and as the Soviet economystruggles to avoid collapse. Thus when Saddam Hussein's August 1990invasion of Kuwait challenged the political and economic status quo inthe oil-rich Middle East, neither the United States nor the Soviet Unionresponded unilaterally. Cooperatively they crafted an international consensusto confront the challenge.
An Introduction to Systems Bioengineering Takes a Clear and Systematic Engineering Approach to Systems Biology Focusing on genetic regulatory networks, Engineering Genetic Circuits presents the modeling, analysis, and design methods for systems biology. It discusses how to examine experimental data to learn about mathematical models, develop efficient abstraction and simulation methods to analyze these models, and use analytical methods to guide the design of new circuits. After reviewing the basic molecular biology and biochemistry principles needed to understand genetic circuits, the book describes modern experimental techniques and methods for discovering genetic circuit models from the data generated by experiments. The next four chapters present state-of-the-art methods for analyzing these genetic circuit models. The final chapter explores how researchers are beginning to use analytical methods to design synthetic genetic circuits. This text clearly shows how the success of systems biology depends on collaborations between engineers and biologists. From biomolecular observations to mathematical models to circuit design, it provides essential information on genetic circuits and engineering techniques that can be used to study biological systems.

Because of their respective histories of colonization and independence, the Spanish-speaking Dominican Republic has developed into the largest economy of the Caribbean, while Haiti, occupying the western side of their shared island of Hispaniola, has become one of the poorest countries in the Americas. While some scholars have pointed to such disparities as definitive of the island's literature, Megan Jeanette Myers challenges this reduction by considering how certain literary texts confront the dominant and, at times, exaggerated anti-Haitian Dominican ideology.Myers examines the antagonistic portrayal of the two nations-from the anti-Haitian rhetoric of the intellectual elites of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo's rule to the writings of Julia Alvarez, Junot Diaz, and others of the Haitian diaspora-endeavoring to reposition Haiti on the literary map of the Dominican Republic and beyond. Focusing on representations of the Haitian-Dominican dynamic that veer from the dominant history, Mapping Hispaniola disrupts the "magnification" and repetition of a Dominican anti-Haitian narrative.
"This latest installment in the Pension Research Council series brings together a wealth of information for those concerned with public policy options. . . .The book is substantive. . . . It provides data, estimates, models, and a framework to help readers think about the underlying problems in the system."--"Industrial and Labor Relations Review" The United States social security system is the nation's largest social insurance program. As such, it has a far-reaching impact throughout the economy, influencing not only old-age economic security but also many behaviors, including corporate employment policy, retirement patterns, and personal saving. In the past, the system's universal coverage and generous benefits ensured popular support to a degree enjoyed by no other form of "big government" social spending. Yet over two-thirds of all Americans today believe that the social security system will face bankruptcy by the time they retire. The question of social security reform--how to reform the system or whether the system needs reform at all--is the subject of heated debate at all levels of government, in the media, and among workers, pensioners, and employers. "Prospects for Social Security Reform" informs the debate by exploring why the system is at a crossroads today and what to do about it. Contributors detail the size and nature of the problem, explain views of key "stakeholders" regarding reform options, and report new evidence on how reform might affect the economy. Research findings and public opinion polls are analyzed, as are lessons from other countries experimenting with new ways to deliver old-age benefit promises. No other volume includes as diverse and expert a set of perspectives on reform and privatization as those gathered here from economists, actuaries, employers, investment managers, and representatives of organized labor. Among its chapters is the path-breaking study "Social Security Money's Worth," the 1999 winner of the TIAA-CREF's Paul A. Samuelson Award for Outstanding Scholarly Writing on Lifelong Financial Security. Olivia S. Mitchell is Executive Director of the Pension Research Council and Professor of Insurance and Risk Management at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Robert J. Myers is a Special Consultant to the Social Security Division of William M. Mercer, Inc. and former Chief Actuary of the Social Security System. Howard Young is a former Special Consultant to the President of the United Auto Workers Union and former Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan.

Stands-by-Herself lives with her grandmother in a buffalo-hide tipi among their Cheyenne people on the Great Plains. Other children make fun of her because she is always by herself dreaming. One day she finds a strange egg-shaped rock and senses there is something special about it. Taking it home, she cares for it as if it were a child, even though the other children mock her. When a terrible drought threatens to wipe out her people, could Stands-by-Herself's rock hold the key to their survival? The Thunder Egg is the story of a girl's coming of age, when she realizes that life can require us to think of others before ourselves and to follow what our hearts tell us. Featuring an author's note, informative notes on the illustrations, and a bibliography, the book is filled with vibrant images of Plains Indian life in the unspoiled West. Carefully crafted text and paintings bring a true authenticity to the time, place, and people of the story.
