Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is an in-depth, thorough guide for the
clinician on the most common complication of sexually transmitted
pathogens. Edited and written by the preeminent experts in the
field, this volume presents the etiology, treatment, and diagnosis
of PID, as well as chapters on risk factors, epidemiology, and
prevention. In addition, the myriad clinical complications and
challenges are discussed in chapters on tuboovarian abscess, PID
and HIV infection, sequelae of PID, PID in adolescence, and PID in
pregnancy. This is a must-have resource for
obstetrician-gynecologists, primary care physicians, and all
clinicians who provide health care to women of all ages.
Mainstream economists have given insufficient attention to
regional and urban economics and economic geography. Comparing
nations in the European Union and North America, this book examines
government activities aimed specifically at regional economic
development. It provides a wide ranging consideration of numerous
facets of regional economic development, encompassing both national
and subnational levels. Proposing that a period of economic
prosperity is the best time to invest in regional development, the
author indicates the need for a direct role by the federal
government.
The study is based on a review of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico,
the European Union, and supranational organizations, such as NAFTA
and the WTO, and their internal impact on regions. The comparison
shows that the U.S. lags dramatically behind the European Union.
The EU, particularly the Western European countries, has long been
in the forefront of regional policy and is actively formulating
policy, whereas the U.S. has no semblance of a federal regional
policy.
This book explores the urban, political, and economic effects of
contemporary capitalism as well being concerned with a collective
analytic that addresses these processes through the lens of
disassembling and reassembling dynamics. The processes of
contemporary globalization have resulted in the commodification of
various dimensions that were previously the domain of state action.
This book evaluates the varying international responses from
communities as they cope and confront the negative impacts of
neoliberalism. In-depth case studies from scholars working in
Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia showcase how various cities
are responding to the effects of neoliberalism. Chapters
investigate and demonstrate how the neoliberal processes of
dissembling are being countered by positive and engaged efforts of
reassembly. From Colombia to Siberia, Chicago to Nigeria,
contributions engage with key economic and urban questions
surrounding the militarization of state, democracy, the rise of the
global capital and the education of young people in slums. This
book will have a broad appeal to academic researchers and urban
planning professionals. It is recommended core reading for students
in Urban Planning, Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, and Urban
Studies.

An incantatory catalog of cultural artifacts either lost to time or
never realized. * A boarder for two years following a national
funeral, Mirabeau is removed from the Pantheon and transferred to
the cemetery of Clamart when his pornographic novels are discovered
* A photograph taken by Hessling on Christmas night, 1943, of a
young woman nailed alive to the village gate of Novimgorod;
Hessling asks his friend Wolfgang Borchert to develop the film,
look at the photograph, and destroy it * The Beautiful Gardener, a
picture by Max Ernst, burned by the Nazis -from The Missing Pieces
The Missing Pieces is an incantatory text, a catalog of what has
been lost over time and what in some cases never existed. Through a
lengthy chain of brief, laconic citations, Henri Lefebvre evokes
the history of what is no more and what never was: the artworks,
films, screenplays, negatives, poems, symphonies, buildings,
letters, concepts, and lives that cannot be seen, heard, read,
inhabited, or known about. It is a literary vanitas of sorts, but
one that confers an almost mythical quality on the enigmatic
creations it recounts-rather than reminding us of the death that
inhabits everything humans create. Lefebvre's list includes Marcel
Duchamp's (accdidentally destroyed) film of Man Ray shaving off the
Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven's pubic hair; the page
written by Balzac on his deathbed (lost); Spinoza's Treatise on the
Rainbow (thrown into a fire); the final seven meters of Kerouac's
original typescript for On the Road (eaten by a dog); the chalk
drawings of Francis Picabia (erased before an audience); and the
one moment in Andre Malraux's life in which he exclaimed "I
believe, for a minute, I was thinking nothing." The Missing Pieces
offers a treasure trove of cultural and artistic detail and will
entertain even those readers not enamored of the void.
Overview The Earth's Survivors Series Follows a Group of Survivors
as they fight to stay alive and make their way out of a small
Northern New York city. The Dead are rising from where they lay in
the streets, but it isn't the dead only that they have to contend
with. The living too want to kill them... Jake and James were
loading up the last of the space that was left in one of the pickup
trucks when Dustin came running in their direction. "People," he
gasped, pointing to the side of the building. "People with guns and
stuff " James and Jake both reached inside the truck and grabbed
their rifles. James reached out and snagged Dustin by the wrist
before he could tear off around the side of the building again.
"Calm down... Take a deep breath," James said in a calming voice.
"Where are they?" "Coming into the parking lot... They're on foot,"
Dustin said. Both Nell and Holly stepped out of the shattered back
door that lead into the department store, their arms loaded down
with clothes in various sizes. Jake sighed in relief, reached down
and unsnapped the strap that held his gun in its holster. Checked
the safety on the rifle, flicked it to off and turned to Nell and
Holly. "We have visitors," he turned to Dustin "Did they see you?"
"I don't know... I don't... I don't think so, but I'm not sure," he
answered, still breathless. A frightened look came into Holly's
eyes. "How many? Are they armed? When," she asked?" "Two guys... A
couple ladies and some kids... Little kids... And a dog too,"
Dustin said. Thinking as he went along. "Okay," Jake said. "We'll
all walk out. Have your safeties off. You may really have to shoot.
For Christ's sake don't shoot yourself... Or me... Or one of us.
Point at who you want to hit and shoot. Like Katie showed you. But
don't shoot unless you have to. Maybe these people are okay." He
waited until everyone had nodded. Nell and Holly took the safeties
off their guns, held them briefly, and then returned them to their
holsters. Nell kept touching the curved metal butt of her pistol
nervously.
