Sharp in focus and succinct in analysis, this Pivot examines the
latest developments and scholarly debates surrounding the sources
of the European Union's crisis of legitimacy and possible
solutions. It examines not only the financial and economic
dimensions of the current crisis, but also those crises at the
heart of the EU integration project.
Much more than a simple examination of EU-Asia relations, this book
examines the idea that the EU may constitute a 'model' for East
Asian regionalism. It challenges specialists on the EU to
understand the EU's impact on Asia and Asia's impact on the EU
whilst illustrating that there is a commonality of interests in
both Europe and Asia.
Bringing together a range of critics working on the hispanic and
francophone as well as anglophone post-colonial regions, this book
aims to dislocate some of the commonly accepted cultural,
linguistic and geographical boundaries that have previously
informed post-colonial studies. Collected essays include:
cross-cultural comparisons from areas as diverse as Africa, Ireland
and Latin America; analysis of specific texts as sites of border
conflict; and revisions of post-colonial theoretical frameworks. A
timely questioning of the categories of a critical field at the
point when it is becoming increasingly comparative, this volume
seeks to suggest more dynamic ways of working in post-colonial
cultural studies.
Lawton Chiles GovernorofFlorida, 1991-1998 Social Change, Public
Policy and Community Collaborations: Training Human Development
Professionalsfor the Twenty-First Century is more than the name of
the Third National Applied Developmental Science Conference; it is
more than the name of a book prepared from the proceedings of this
conference. It describes one of the largest and most complex
challenges facing state government, higher education and
communities in the coming decade. The answer to this challenge will
not be found in a college or program in our higher education
institution nor in laws conceived and written in state capitals.
The answers to this challenge are to be found at the place where
academia, public policy, and communities meet. The problems and
issues that are facing our children and families will require that
all the players work together to develop community-driven programs,
designed and evaluated using current research and staffed by highly
trained professionals. It will be critical that academia, policy
makers, legislators, and community members work together to ensure
that the programs we design work. We must ensure that research is
being conducted so that programs that work better are continued and
programs that don't are stopped.
The production of this book represents a culmination for me of some
25 years of interest in the field of personality and substance use
and abuse. In choosing the field of substanceuse and abuse for the
focus of our research, all of the investi- tors collaborating in
this research have been sustained by the awareness that the work we
are doing has an important purpose. Substance abuse continues to
have enormous impacts on individuals and families, and prevention
and treatment - proaches developed to date have not always been as
successful as we would hope to see. New advances in our fundamental
understanding of the causal mec- nisms involved in the development
ofaddiction may be necessary to advance our success in developing
new forms of prevention and treatment for alcohol and drug abuse.
The work in this book builds on the work of numerous previous
investi- tors who have been drawn to investigate this topic. As you
will notice in the extensive reference list, there have been
hundreds of articles published on this topic. Although each of
these references has added a small piece to our und- standing of
the relationship between personality and alcohol abuse, the
majority of these studies have been done on clinical samples and
often involved no control groups or poorly matched control groups.
Several important previous longitu- nal investigations have been
conducted, but these investigations have usually not included
general population samples or comprehensivepersonality test

Challenging our understanding of ideas about psychology in
Shakespeare's time, Shakespeare's Imagined Persons proposes we
should view his characters as imagined persons. A new reading of
B.F. Skinner's radical behaviourism brings out how - contrary to
the impression he created - Skinner ascribes an important role in
human behaviour to cognitive activity. Using this analysis, Peter
Murray demonstrates the consistency of radical behaviourism with
the psychology of character formation and acting in writers from
Plato to Shakespeare - an approach little explored in the current
debates about subjectivity in Elizabethan culture. Murray also
shows that radical behaviourism can explain the phenomena observed
in modern studies of acting and social role-playing. Drawing on
these analyses of earlier and modern psychology, Murray goes on to
reveal the dynamics of Shakespeare's characterizations of Hamlet,
Prince Hal, Rosalind, and Perdita in a fascinating new light.
The true story of how a group of talented volleyball players
learned to put their egos aside, became a team, and changed the
sport of volleyball forever. In the early 1980s, a golden
generation of volleyball players joined the U.S. men's national
team. With the Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 1984, the pressure
was on to build a winning program around these exceptional
athletes. But could a group of individuals put aside their egos and
play as a true team to achieve Olympic gold in their home country?
In If Gold Is Our Destiny: How a Team of Mavericks Came Together
for Olympic Glory, Sean P. Murray shares the incredible story of
how a group of free-spirited players and their demanding coach
captured the heart of a nation and became one of the greatest
indoor volleyball teams of all time. As the team struggled leading
up to the Olympics, head coach Doug Beal mandated a highly
controversial three-week Outward Bound hike across one hundred
miles in the Canyonlands and Abajo Mountains in Utah. Murray
details all the internal strife and heartwarming triumphs from this
unprecedented trip, as players and coaches learned to cooperate and
trust one another. He reveals how the team used this newfound trust
to implement an innovative approach to volleyball that changed not
only their success on the court but the sport itself on a global
scale. Featuring original interviews with players, coaches, and
staff, along with a foreword by three-time gold medal champion
Karch Kiraly, If Gold Is Our Destiny delivers an inside look at
what it takes for a group of talented individuals to overcome their
differences, build a culture of excellence, and become the best in
the world.

Over the past 15 years, there has been a 300 percent increase in
the use of psychotropic medications with girls and boys under the
age of 20, and prescriptions for preschoolers have skyrocketed. A
stellar group of authors from across disciplines explains this
increase, questions the causes, and presents disturbing thoughts
regarding this phenomenon as they describe the risks it creates for
children. While there are certainly extreme cases where drugs are
the only option, medication rather than psychotherapy and
counseling has become the first choice for treatment rather than a
last resort. The experts who joined forces for this book take an
in-depth look at the conditions that have led to "drugging our
children," and stress how emotional, social, cultural, and physical
environments can both damage and heal young minds. The so-called
medical model, one maintaining that psychological disturbance is
genetic and thus requires medication, is challenged in this volume.
Contributors range from a pediatrician who has testified before
Congress and been featured in a Time magazine cover story, to a top
child psychiatrist who is an official for the American Academy of
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, along with a well-known child
psychiatrist, psychologists, environmentalists, and a public policy
consultant. This is riveting reading for all who care about the
youngest members of society. Among other issues, this work looks at
controversy over whether psychiatric medications are safe or
effective for children--and what little we know about their effect
on still-developing brains--as well as the role of corporate
interests in the increased use of psychotropics for children.
Chapters address the roleof environment in both causing and curing
disorders more and more often diagnosed in our youngsters: from
ADHD, depression, and anxiety to eating disorders. The core
questions addressed by this sage group of contributors are these:
Why are so many children being diagnosed with "psychiatric"
disturbances and given drugs? Why have drugs become the first
treatment of choice to deal with those disorders?
This book explores the history of the idea of genius from its
origins in classical antiquity to its deconstruction in
postmodernist criticism. Focusing mainly on the creative arts, the
book examines certain key points in the development of the idea,
and also addresses the problem of what constitutes genius in
specific subject areas. Experts in different fields have
contributed chapters on literature, art, music, mathematics,
philosophy and psychiatry to produce a volume which illuminates an
abiding obsession throughout the history of European culture.
The contributors to this volume show how the ancient image of
the inspired poet and the Renaissance conception of the" divino
artista" both anticipate later notions of genius, developed into
the 18th century around the central figures of Homer, Shakespeare
and Goethe. Romantic definitions of genius are analysed, as are the
implications of Nietzsche's pronouncements on 'human greatness'.
The historic conjunction of genius and madness is explored from the
early belief in divine possession through the Renaissance notion of
melancholy to the age of psychoanalysis.

Your answer to the software project management gap The Complete
Software Project Manager: From Planning to Launch and Beyond
addresses an interesting problem experienced by today's project
managers: they are often leading software projects, but have no
background in technology. To close this gap in experience and help
you improve your software project management skills, this essential
text covers key topics, including: how to understand software
development and why it is so difficult, how to plan a project,
choose technology platforms, and develop project specifications,
how to staff a project, how to develop a budget, test software

This is the eighth volume in a planned 10-volume operational and
chronological series covering the Marine Corps' participation in
the Vietnam War. A separate topical series will complement the
operational histories. This particular volume details the gradual
withdrawl in 1970-1971 of Marine combat forces from South Vietnam's
northernmost corps area, I Corps, as part of an overall American
strategy of turning the ground was against the North Vietnamese and
Viet Cong over to the Armed Forces of the Republic of Vietnam.
