TIle work described in this report was presented at the Advanced
Research Workshop, "Environmental Aspects of Converting CW
Facilities to Peaceful Purposes and Derivative Technologies in
Modeling, Medicine and Monitoring." TIle ARW was jointly sponsored
by NATO and the International Science and Technology Center (lSTC),
Moscow. The workshop was held at the AC Laboratory, Spiez,
Switzerland, in April, 1999. The editors and directors would like
to thank the NATO Science Committee and the ISTC for their generous
support and encouragement in making this event possible. We wish to
give a special to Dr. Bernhard Brunner and his colleagues at the AC
Laboratory, Spiez, for their more than generous support. In
addition, we would like to thank tlle following individuals for
their contributions to a fruitful discussion: Mr. Armando Alcaraz

One of the major problems associated with the disposal of chemical
weapons is that the agents have degraded over time, some quite
seriously. Detecting and identifying the products of this
decomposition are necessary prerequisites to the safe, complete and
environmentally benign destruction of stockpiled weapons. The book
presents and discusses both basic and novel techniques in a variety
of areas of analytical chemistry which are relevant to achieving
the ultimate destruction of chemical weapons. Presentations address
sample collection and preparation, mass spectrometry,
chromatographic techniques, NMR, and air monitoring techniques. The
work shows that analytical methods do exist to effectively support
the destruction of chemical munitions. While further research is
needed, the book provides an excellent baseline for further
advances in the field.
"Raising Doctors on a Patients Salary" is a book written by Dr.
Jesse McGuire, that tells the story of two ordinary parents with
average incomes, who nurtured two exceptionally gifted children all
the way through two of the most prestigeous Medical and Dental
schools in the nation, their socio-economic status,
notwithstanding. This book addresses the problems, challenges, and
triumphs of raising children, particularly as it pertains to
keeping children of all academic levels motivated, inspired, and on
track. It also addresses the financial costs, and personal
sacrifices associated with sending not one, but two children
through Medical schools in these tough economic times.

Major goals of health care in the 21st century are to make health
care more efficient and less costly. These goals can be
accomplished by implementation of evidence-based care; greater
coordination of patient care; implementation of preventive care and
wellness measures; and the evaluation of outcomes of care to
identify improved ways to provide care. A universal patient medical
record can help achieve these goals of more efficient and less
costly health care.
This book describes how an automated patient medical record could
be built that could evolve into a universal patient record. Such a
universal patient record would change medical care from a focus on
short-term care to one oriented to long-term, preventive-care. It
would remove patient care from being the province of the single
physician to that of the responsibility of many different
healthcare providers, possibly located anywhere in the world.
The Sacramento Valley of northern California was a rich, diverse
environment that supported some of the densest populations of
nonagricultural people in the world. Periodic flooding, however,
has buried much of the valley's deep cultural history under
alluvium. This volume shares the discovery of four buried
archaeological sites, including one dating to 7,000 years ago,
filled with a diversified assemblage of artifacts and a rich
assortment of food remains. Stone net sinkers and associated fish
bones represent the oldest fishery ever documented in the interior
of California, while items such as marine shell beads and exotic
obsidian, and some of the oldest charmstones ever recovered in
California provide evidence for long-distance trade networks. The
other three sites date between 4000 and 300 years ago and reflect
increasing human population density, technological innovation, and
the rise of sedentism and territoriality. This historical sequence
culminated in findings from a 400- to 300-year-old house complex
probably occupied by the Mechoopda Indian Tribe, who collaborated
with the authors throughout the project.
