A singular view of the Great War on many fronts At the outbreak of
the First World War the United States of America was a neutral
power. This gave its journalists the opportunity to visit the
various war fronts with a freedom to view campaigns from all
perspectives and with impartiality from the lines of several of the
combatant armies. War Correspondent Arthur Ruhl dropped his fishing
rod, jumped on a steamer and arrived in Europe in time to witness,
from the viewpoint of the invaded, the overwhelming might of the
Imperial German Army as it bore down on Belgium. He experienced the
chaos as France feared for its imminent fall, and the fall of
Antwerp before crossing the lines to see the war from the
perspective of an elated Germany. Experiences of the German front
line were followed by a journey to the east as news broke of
Winston Churchill's Dardanelles adventure. After coming under fire
in company with Turkish troops at Gallipoli, Ruhl concluded his
tour of the maelstrom that was the Great War on the Russian Front.
Ruhl's was 'an eye in the storm'-a view of a war not his own by a
professional writer-making it a unique, engrossing and
multi-faceted narrative of some of the most momentous events in the
history of human conflict.
This comprehensive guide to managing in the not-for-profit sector
is a twofold resource. The first part is a user-friendly textbook
examining what is involved in producing mission-driven goods and
services, how to manage the relationships of nonprofits with the
private and public sectors, and how to operate in both external and
internal environments. The second part is a practitioner's
ready-reference handbook, complete with survival tips and action
items. Mission-driven, not-for-profit organizations pose unique
challenges to leaders and managers. These challenges differ
tremendously from the profit-driven requirements of the corporate
world, and are even greater when budgets are tighter. This
comprehensive guide to managing in the nonprofit sector is a
twofold resource. The first part is a user-friendly textbook
examining what is involved in producing mission-driven goods and
services, how to manage the relationships of nonprofits with the
private and public sectors, and how to operate in both external and
internal environments. Six case studies and end-of-chapter reviews
facilitate learning in this expanding field. The second part is a
practitioner's ready-reference handbook, complete with survival
tips and action items.
The Novel as Network: Forms, Ideas, Commodities engages with the
contemporary Anglophone novel and its derivatives and by-products
such as graphic novels, comics, podcasts, and Quality TV. This
collection investigates the meaning of the novel in the larger
system of contemporary media production and (post-)print culture,
viewing the novel through the lens of actor network theory as a
node in the novel network. Chapters underscore the deep
interconnection between all the aspects of the novel, between the
novel as a (literary) form, as an idea, and as a commodity.
Bringing together experts from American, British, and Postcolonial
Studies, as well as Book, Publishing, and Media Studies, this
collection offers a new vantage point to view the novel in its
multifaceted expressions today.
Bookshelves in the Age of the COVID-19 Pandemic provides the first
detailed scholarly investigation of the cultural phenomenon of
bookshelves (and the social practices around them) since the start
of the pandemic in March 2020. With a foreword by Lydia Pyne,
author of Bookshelf (2016), the volume brings together 17 scholars
from 6 countries (Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the
UK, and the USA) with expertise in literary studies, book history,
publishing, visual arts, and pedagogy to critically examine the
role of bookshelves during the current pandemic. This volume
interrogates the complex relationship between the physical book and
its digital manifestation via online platforms, a relationship
brought to widespread public and scholarly attention by the global
shift to working from home and the rise of online pedagogy. It also
goes beyond the (digital) bookshelf to consider bookselling, book
accessibility, and pandemic reading habits.
The Law and Politics of Sustainability explores efforts made to
address pressing environmental concerns through legislation,
conventions, directives, treaties, and protocols. Articles explain
the mechanics of environmental law, the concepts that shape
sustainable development, case studies and rulings that have set
precedents, approaches to sustainable development taken by legal
systems around the world, and more. Experts and scholars in the
field raise provocative questions about the effectiveness of
international law versus national law in protecting the
environment, and about the effect of current laws on future
generations. They analyze the successes and shortcomings of present
legal instruments, corporate and public policies, social movements,
and conceptual strategies, offering readers a preview of the steps
necessary to develop laws and policies that will promote genuine
sustainability.
Volume 12 of the EYIEL focuses on "The Future of Dispute Settlement
in International Economic Law". While new forms of dispute
settlement are emerging, others are in deep crisis. The volume
starts off with reflections on Dispute Settlement and the World
Trade Organisation, most prominently the crisis of the Appellate
Body, but also addressing international intellectual property law
and the African Continental Free Trade Area. This is followed by a
section on Dispute Settlement and Investment
Protection/International Investment Law, which includes articles on
the summary dismissal of claims, the margin of appreciation
doctrine, the use of conciliation to settle sovereign debt
disputes, and contract-based arbitration in light of Achmea and
Hagia Sophia at ICSID. Further contributions consider the emerging
role of commercial courts, the dejudicialization of international
economic law, dispute settlement in the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement,
reference mechanisms in dispute resolution clauses, and UNCLOS.

wreaks havoc on the lives of her paramours. Frances, Tilly's
hairdresser, becomes so melancholy that she turns into an almond.
It is up to Tilly to get her back.

At a dinner party in New Jersey, two couples discuss polyamory as
brought up by the introduction of a new temp, Pip, in Jane's
office. When they invite Pip and her two male partners, discussion
turns to action and the exploration of unexplored desire turns
animalistic, and then Jane's daughter sees it all. How to Transcend
a Happy Marriage blurs the lines of monogamy and asks how deeply
friends, lovers, and strangers connect.
Dramatic Comedy / 5m, 2f / Unit Set In Eurydice, Sarah Ruhl
reimagines the classic myth of Orpheus through the eyes of its
heroine. Dying too young on her wedding day, Eurydice must journey
to the underworld, where she reunites with her father and struggles
to remember her lost love. With contemporary characters, ingenious
plot twists, and breathtaking visual effects, the play is a fresh
look at a timeless love story. "RHAPSODICALLY BEAUTIFUL. A weird
and wonderful new play - an inexpressibly moving theatrical fable
about love, loss and the pleasures and pains of memory." - The New
York Times "EXHILARATING!! A luminous retelling of the Orpheus
myth, lush and limpid as a dream where both author and audience
swim in the magical, sometimes menacing, and always thrilling flow
of the unconscious." - The New Yorker "Exquisitely staged by Les
Waters and an inventive design team...Ruhl's wild flights of
imagination, some deeply affecting passages and beautiful imagery
provide transporting pleasures. They conspire to create original,
at times breathtaking, stage pictures." - Variety
In this moving exploration of parenthood, an American mother and a
Tibetan father have a three-year-old son believed to be the
reincarnation of a Buddhist lama. When a Tibetan lama and a monk
come to their home unexpectedly, asking to take their child away
for a life of spiritual training in India, the parents must make a
life-altering choice that will test their strength, their marriage,
and their hearts. The Oldest Boy is a richly emotional journey

Art imitates Life. Life imitates Art. When two actors with a
history are thrown together as romantic leads in a forgotten 1930s
melodrama, they quickly lose touch with reality as the story
onstage follows them offstage. Stage Kiss captures Sarah Ruhl's
singular voice. It is a charming tale about what happens when
lovers share a stage kiss-or when actors share a real one."CRITIC'S
PICK. Suffused with warmth and humor. Sarah Ruhl frothily whips

Dramatic Comedy Characters: 8 male, 3 female (with doubling) Hailed
by the New Yorker's John Lahr as "extraordinary", "bold", and
"inventive", Sarah Ruhl's Passion Play takes us behind the scenes
of three communities attempting to stage the death and resurrection
of Christ. From Queen Elizabeth's England to Hitler's Germany to
Reagan's America, Ruhl's exploration of devotion takes us on a
humorous yet unsettling journey filled with lust, whimsy, and a lot
of fish. This intimate epic occurs at the timely intersection of
politics and religion. Ruhl dramatizes a community of players
rehearsing their annual staging of the Easter Passion in three
different eras: 1575 northern England, just before Queen Elizabeth
outlaws the ritual; 1934 Oberammergua, Bavaria, as Hitler is rising
to power; and Spearfish, South Dakota, from the time of Vietnam
through Reagan's presidency. In each period, the players grapple in
different ways with the transformative nature of art, and politics
are never far in the background, as Queen Elizabeth, Hitler, and
Reagan each appear, played by a single commanding actor. Named one
of the "Ten Best Plays of 2008" by The New Yorker "Her [Ruhl's]
unmistakable voice - poetic and quirky, underpinned with serious
feeling and even more serious intelligence - trumpets forth in
brash, impressive form in this ambitious and frisky if sometimes
unruly play." -New York Times. "Ruhl's voice seems to retreat
beyond the sphere of the play, performing that special vanishment
that good writers-and good gods-know best how to do...Critic's
Pick!" -Time Out NY "Let's just get the superlatives out of the
way. Sarah Ruhl's Passion Play is the most exciting, stimulating,
and thrilling piece of theater to hit New York since Angels in
America." -Backstage

new comedy by MacArthur "Genius" Grant recipient and Pulitzer Prize
finalist, Sarah Ruhl, author of The Clean House and Eurydice. A
work about how we memorialize the dead-and how that remembering
changes us-it is the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own
assumptions about morality, redemption, and the need to connect in
a technologically obsessed world.

Man's Cell Phone, Sarah Ruhl is forever vital in her lyrical and
biting takes on how we behave." - The Washington Post

delivers a fresh and humorous look at the times we live in." -
Variety

NPR
..".beguiling new comedy...Ms. Ruhl's work blends the mundane
and the metaphysical, the blunt and the obscure, the patently
