One of the mathematical challenges of modern physics lies in the
development of new tools to efficiently describe different branches
of physics within one mathematical framework. This text introduces
precisely such a broad mathematical model, one that gives a clear
geometric expression of the symmetry of physical laws and is
entirely determined by that symmetry. The first three chapters
discuss the occurrence of bounded symmetric domains (BSDs) or
homogeneous balls and their algebraic structure in physics. The
book further provides a discussion of how to obtain a triple
algebraic structure associated to an arbitrary BSD; the relation
between the geometry of the domain and the algebraic structure is
explored as well. The last chapter contains a classification of
BSDs revealing the connection between the classical and the
exceptional domains. With its unifying approach to mathematics and
physics, this work will be useful for researchers and graduate
students interested in the many physical applications of bounded
symmetric domains. It will also benefit a wider audience of
mathematicians, physicists, and graduate students working in
relativity, geometry, and Lie theory.

When Britain seized the Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius and Bourbon and the later-settled satellite of Seychelles (collectively known as the Mascareignes) during the Napoleonic War, after outlawing the slave trade itself, it became a question whether the British anti-slave-trade statutes should be applied in the former French island. Enduring questions arose as to whether the new British administrators of Mauritius and Seychelles, who often became slave and plantation owners themselves, winked at the illegal slave trade and whether they were permitted to do so by the British government. This book is an in-depth study of slave plantations, law courts, and the illegal slave trade in the Southwest Indian Ocean.
This self-contained monograph provides a mathematically simple and
physically meaningful model which unifies gravity,
electromagnetism, optics and even some quantum behavior. The
simplicity of the model is achieved by working in the frame of an
inertial observer and by using a physically meaningful least action
principle. The authors introduce an extension of the Principle of
Inertia. This gives rise to a simple, physically meaningful action
function. Visualizations of the geometryare obtained by plotting
the action function. These visualizations may be used to compare
the geometries of different types of fields. Moreover, a new
understanding of the energy-momentum of a field emerges. The
relativistic dynamics derived here properly describes motion of
massive and massless objects under the influence of a gravitational
and/or an electromagnetic field, and under the influence of
isotropic media. The reader will learn how to compute the
precession of Mercury, the deflection of light, and the Shapiro
time delay. Also covered is the relativistic motion of binary
stars, including the generation of gravitational waves, a
derivation of Snell's Law and a relativistic description of spin.
We derive a complex-valued prepotential of an electromagnetic
field. The prepotential is similar to the wave function in quantum
mechanics. The mathematics is accessible to students after standard
courses in multivariable calculus and linear algebra. For those
unfamiliar with tensors and the calculus of variations, these
topics are developed rigorously in the opening chapters. The
unifying model presented here should prove useful to upper
undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to seasoned
researchers.

partnership... Addictive reading!' Alison Belsham, author of The
Tattoo Thief Nothing is as it seems, for Butler and West. One spring
evening, a mother and her children are brutally attacked in their
home. The unprovoked and violent assault leaves DS Robin Butler and

and there is no apparent motive. The investigation's only lead is
Andrew Grace, the husband who was not home at the time. He and his
business partner have created unique virtual reality software which

when a woman linked to the work of Andrew and his co-founder is
kidnapped, the need for progress becomes critical. Failure to solve
the case will result in murder. Meanwhile, Robin and Freya's
unresolved feelings have come to the surface and they must finally

This book tells the untold story of Australia's veteran bikers.
Like other motorcycle clubs, the Australian War Fighters
(pseudonym) are a fringe-dwelling subculture that provokes strong
opinions. Newspaper editors have been salivating over motorcycle
club imagery since the subculture emerged in California in the
middle of the twentieth century. Motorcycle clubs remain the
subject of persisting 'moral panics' in Australia and have been the
subject of successive crackdowns, police operations, and
hard-hitting legislation aimed at driving them out of existence.
The War Fighters operate on the periphery of the hard-core one
percent element of the subculture. While they enjoy the notoriety
of looking mean, the War Fighters do significant charity work, and
the seemingly bizarre combination of outlaw biker subculture
aesthetic with raising money for local hospitals means these men
enjoy the paradox of looking bad while doing good. Drawing on
sociological research Edward Scarr tells the true story of how and
why the veteran motorcycle club subculture came to be. What follows
is an ultimately hopeful story of redemption from despair and the
salvation of lives that had been all but given up on.

Five friends meet. Only four come home. On Christmas morning, DS
Robin Butler has no plans to celebrate. He'll be glad to get back
to work - a wish that comes true sooner than he anticipates. A dog
walker at a local beach has discovered five unresponsive people
strewn across the shingle. By the time Robin arrives, one is
pronounced dead, and the other four are being treated in hospital.
DC Freya West is less than pleased when the romantic day with her
boyfriend is scuppered, but duty calls. As she and Butler speak to
those involved, it's clear something is being left unsaid. They
claim they are friends, and that they don't know how one of the
group was killed. But why are they so cagey? A cold case
investigation unlocks some answers about the history between the
beach-going gang, yet they're tight-lipped about what prompted them
to meet on Christmas Eve. Butler and West are getting nowhere, and
their partnership is about to face another test. When Freya wants
to come clean about events in her past, it's not just her neck on
the line, but Robin's too. Can their relationship survive if their
pact of silence is broken? The thrilling new instalment from

The Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius and Bourbon and their
satellite colony of Seychelles, collectively known as the
Mascareignes, were all plantation colonies, as well as significant
naval bases from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. Scarr
uses Mauritian, British and French archival sources to examine both
the situation of slaves, as painted by court records in particular,
and the psychology of both slave traders and slave owners..

she has been having an affair with. The future she imagined has
been snatched away. Meanwhile, her new boss, DS Robin Butler, is
preoccupied with his own problems. Mistakes he thought were buried
deep in his past now threaten to be exposed. Before long, both
Butler and West are keeping secrets that could end their careers -
and worse. When the detectives have a chance to tell the truth,

how to uphold it. Don't miss this tense and compulsive police
procedural thriller. Perfect for fans of Sunday Times bestselling

not expecting that! I was just so invested in the brilliant
partnership of Butler and West that I couldn't put it down....

Butler is summoned to a crime scene. Not as a policeman, but as
best friend to renowned meteorologist, Dr Finn Mason. The morning
after studying an enormous storm, Finn has locked himself in a van.
Bloodied, confused, and with no memory of how he came to be there.
And alongside him - a dead body. Butler sets out to prove Finn's
innocence, his friend now accused of murder. Meanwhile, DC Freya
West is struggling to cope. She has been plagued by nightmares
since the events of nine months ago. Freya assists her boss on his
quest to clear Finn's name, but while Butler becomes increasingly
desperate to help his boyhood friend, Freya is crumbling under the
weight of the secrets she is keeping. As the past threatens to
