In an age when continued financial and other support for teaching
and research in sociology cannot be taken for granted, sociologists
have been surprisingly slow to provide a clear statement of the
achievements of sociology in the western world since 1950. What Has
Sociology Achieved? does this by assembling twelve essays specially
commissioned from distinguished authors, to which the editors add
an introduction setting out the issues and a concluding chapter
which draws together recurrent themes.
This book explains the making of the South African state and
thereby contributes to the development theory by analyzing the
concept of the embedded neoliberal state. The author offers a
theoretical exploration of state formation as an inherently
interconnected international and domestic social process as applied
to the history and development of South Africa. A genuine social
science that eschews disciplinary boundaries, this will appeal to a
wide audience of scholars in the fields of political development,
political science, African and development studies.

in-depth review of crystal-induced arthritis and related disorders.
Providing a historical perspective throughout, this work includes
detailed descriptions of the clinical features of these diseases,
as well as a current overview of their identification,
epidemiology, genetics, and underlying pathophysiology. This
authoritative guide also reviews case studies, current diagnostic
tools, and the prevalence of these conditions while introducing new
and emerging therapies for disease management.

developments and scientific evidence to provide authoritative
coverage of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment, radiographic
methods, surgical access, treatment strategies, and more. This new
edition incorporates recent advances in research and presents
up-to-date treatment recommendations for clinical practice. New and
expanded chapters address topics such as abnormal root growth
associated with tooth Impaction, improvements in the diagnosis of
pathologic entities using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT),
root and crown resorption, and treating abnormal incisor root
development caused by past trauma. Throughout the text, readers
gain valuable insight into the management of impacted teeth in
real-world practice, illustrated by updated cases from the author's
own clinic. Provides protocols for common cases as well as complex
and rare presentations Contains individual chapters on the specific
aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of impaction in each of the
different types of teeth Covers prevalence, etiology, diagnosis,

For those who care about the future of sociology, these 12 essays draw together recurrent themes covering analytical, hermeneutic and historico-institutional traditions. Theory, research methods and applications are also discussed.;Henk Becker has also edited "Impact Assessment Today" with A.L.Porter and "Sociologie en Verzorgingsstaat" with P.Glassbergen.
Claude Lévi-Strauss is probably the most complex anthropological theorist of all time. His work continues to influence present-day thinkers in his field, but he is perhaps even more influential beyond it. As one of the key figures in the development of what is known today as ‘French theory,’ Lévi-Strauss was one of the most important thinkers of the 20th-century. His theories of interpretation, meaning and culture have helped shape the ideas and methodologies of a range of disciplines, above all literature and philosophy. At the heart of Lévi-Strauss’s work are the questions of meaning and where meaning comes from. As an anthropologist, he was primarily interested in what completely different and separate cultures might have in common. Crucially, he saw how common ground resides not on the surface of cultures (i.e., in similar customs), but deep inside invisible background structures of thought. His quest was to peel away the surface of different cultures through careful interpretation, advancing from one layer to another until he discovered the structures that lay behind all of the exterior practices and meanings. Infamously challenging, his work shows interpretative skills working at the highest, most abstract level possible.
Orthodontic Treatment of Impacted Teeth provides its readers with a
gold-standard resource to tackle common, complex and multi-
factorial clinical scenarios. Rooted firmly in the scientific
reality, it also provides a valuable repository of the evidence-
base for this subject area. The third edition of this classic text
has been fully revised and updated to reflect the latest advances
in research and clinical practice. It discusses recent developments
in the periodontal outcome of surgical exposure of impacted teeth,
and also incorporates more protocols for routine cases. This
enables clinicians to develop their skills in the simpler cases, as
well as to improve their understanding of complex and rare
presentations. An especially useful chapter looks at failure and
impending failure, providing a valuable insight into the real life
management of impacted teeth. The author describes how to recognize
failure and proposes ways to avoid it, frequently illustrating them
with cases from his own clinic. Key features: * Fully revised and
updated classic * Coverage expanded to include protocols for
routine, as well as complex cases * Includes new chapter on extreme
tooth displacement and complicating factors * Provides unparalleled
coverage of the evidence base * Highly illustrated in full colour

The very meaning of economic inequality is fundamental for
understanding today's policy debates over issues such as
interpreting changes in income inequality over time, across
countries, or between groups within a society, as well as
determining whether or not society is becoming more polarized with
a shrinking middle class. Professor Becker has selected seminal
papers covering topics including foundations of income inequality
measurement, the social welfare view of inequality and directions
for future research on economic inequality. Along with a new and
original introduction, this essential single volume is an
indispensable tool for scholars and practitioners alike.
This publication represents the report of the Scenario Committee on
Ageing. The draft report was discussed with a wide range of
experts, inter alia during the symposium 'Growing Old in the
Future' held on October 27th, 1984. In addition to the scenario
report, a background report containing the basic analysis employed
in the scenarios on ageing has been prepared. The scenario report
has been written in such a way that it can be read independently of
the background study. Scenarios are a relatively new phenomenon in
health care and related policy. For this reason it might be useful
to furnish the reader with a few suggestions. As a first step,
perusing the summary will provide the reader with an ~verall
picture of this application of the scenario method in policy
preparation and policy implementation in the sector health of the
elderly. As a second step, we would recommend that the scenario
report be read in its totality. It might be useful to note down
points on which the reader would like to make additions or
variations.

The geologic story of the park consists of two distinct chapters:
one recorded in the bedrock, which ranges from 400 to 7 million
years in age, and a second much younger story written in the
surficial sediments whose ages with few exceptions range from ca.
20,000 years ago to the present.
If priests want the people entrusted to their care to develop a
meaningful spiritual life, they must provide a living example of
what that is.In "A Life of Daring Simplicity: Daily Meditations on
the Priesthood" Michael Beckerhelps priests provide that example.
Monsignor Becker has gathered a powerful collection of reflections
drawn from an impressively wide array of great spiritual guides.
Pope Saint John Paul II is well-represented here and so is Karl
Rahner. We also hear from Catherine de Hueck Doherty and Adrian Von
Speyr, Pedro Arrupe and Columba Marmion, and many more. Each
passage challenges priests to reflect on their own vocation. Every
page is filled with holy wisdom that will nourish priestly ministry
and invite readers to embrace "a life of daring simplicity"--words
used by Pope Saint John XXIII to describe his own life. Each day
includes a Scripture verse, an inspiring insight on the priestly
life, and a closing prayer or question to prompt deeper reflection.
Spend a few minutes every day with these meditations and you will
deepen your own commitment to your ministry and find ever more zeal
to serve those entrusted to your care.

Child maltreatment has enormous costs, both at the individual and
the societal level. Today, thanks to increased knowledge and
awareness, we are better equipped than ever to prevent the trauma
of child abuse and to intervene to help maltreated children. Yet,
fundamental questions remain. How and why does normal development
go awry in maltreated children? Why are some children more affected
than others, and what are the processes that promote or undermine
resilience? How can clinicians and child protection professionals
help neglected and abused children and their families in the most
timely and effective manner? This book explains and summarises the
science of developmental psychopathology for clinicians and other
professionals who work with maltreated children and those at risk.
The authors focus particularly on how maltreatment differentially
affects children at key stages of their lives, ranging from infancy
to early adulthood, so that clinicians can be aware of age specific
vulnerabilities. This handy guide encourages its readers to look
beyond immediate presenting problems to better understand the needs
and experiences of their young clients.
