"Coalescent Argumentation" is based on the concept that arguments
can function from agreement, rather than disagreement. To prove
this idea, Gilbert first discusses how several
components--emotional, visceral (physical) and kisceral (intuitive)
are utilized in an argumentative setting by people everyday. These
components, also characterized as "modes," are vital to
argumentative communication because they affect both the argument
and the resulting outcome.
In addition to the components/modes, this book also stresses the
goals in argumentation as a means for understanding one's own and
one's opposer's positions. Gilbert argues that by viewing positions
as complex human events involving a variety of communicative modes,
we are better able to find commonalities across positions, and,
therefore, move from conflict to resolution. By focusing on
agreement and shared goals in all modes, arguers can coalesce
diverse positions and more easily distinguish between minor or
unrelated differences and core disagreements. This permits much
greater latitude for locating shared beliefs, values, and attitudes
that will lead to conflict resolution.

Police Corruption in the NYPD: From Knapp to Mollen explores how
the New York Police Department experienced two major investigations
within a quarter of a century. It compares the states of corruption
within the NYPD during the Knapp and Mollen commissions, examining
why corruption continued and why the revealed ethical breaches
became more serious. It also discusses how corruption was enhanced
even after accountability and responsibility were assigned to
department administration. The book gives in-depth discussions of
the Knapp and Mollen reports and relates the history and relevance
of efforts to combat corruption and to improve police practices. It
uses empirical data from interviews and current NYPD recruit
training documents as reference materials in examining police
practices. It also identifies failures of leadership that
contributed to the systemic ethical degeneration of the NYPD.
Police Corruption in the NYPD goes beyond the training of ethics
and enforcement by delving into the departmental failures that
permit officers to develop from being merely unethical to becoming
criminals. By presenting and analyzing theories of corruption from
current authorities, it lays a foundation for critical discussion
and comparison between commissions as well as current department
ethical training and practices.

Collected letters of a Confederate officer and his family detail
daily life and loss on the battlefield. Hope, sacrifice, and
restoration: throughout the American Civil War and its aftermath,
the Foster family endured all of these in no small measure. Drawing
from dozens of public and privately owned letters, A. Gibert
Kennedy recounts the story of his great-great-grandfather and his
family in A South Carolina Upcountry Saga: The Civil War Letters of
Barham Bobo Foster and His Family, 1860-1863. Barham Bobo Foster
was a gentleman planter from the Piedmont who signed the South
Carolina Ordinance of Secession and served as a lieutenant colonel
in the Third South Carolina Volunteers alongside his two sons.
Kennedy's primary sources are letters written by Foster and his
sons, but he also references correspondence involving Foster's
daughters and his wife, Mary Ann. The letters describe experiences
on the battlefields of Virginia and South Carolina, vividly
detailing camp life, movements, and battles along with stories of
bravery, loss, and sacrifice. The Civil War cost Foster his health,
all that he owned, and his two sons, though he was able to rebuild
with the help of his wife and three daughters. Supplementing the
correspondence with maps, illustrations, and genealogical
information, Kennedy shows the full arc of the Foster family's
struggle and endurance in the Civil War era.
The rash of bullying incidents within schools, universities, and
workplaces has prompted a public outcry and a call to action. To
address the growing problem of interpersonal violence, schools have
engaged in anti -bullying rallies, businesses have enacted civility
policies, states have passed legislation, and efforts have been
made to educate individuals on what constitutes good behavior.
Increasingly, institutions are realizing from a cost/benefit
perspective that a hurtful environment can negatively impact their
bottom line. Correspondingly, the rising number of climate surveys
to address bullying at work is a testament to the importance of
this topic and its potential negative impact. Colleges and
universities confirm the need to create a more welcoming culture,
as reflected in the current dialogue to promote civility. Publisher
offerings in business ethics are inadequate to address this issue,
as they focus on the importance of social responsibility and the
fallout from moral turpitude. There is a pressing need for
materials that will educate students on "civil" concepts and
provide them with applied learning. Institutions of higher
education would like to inform students about bullying, its
ramifications, and how it can be avoided, but a compendium of
related exercises is in most cases non-existent. To solidify
student learning about positive citizenship, an established author
(and anti-bullying activist) has proposed How to Transform
Workplace Bullies into Allies. This unique groundbreaking text will
provide hands-on, experiential exercises that will engage students
with the material, and create a multi-dimensional focus to enable
concept retention. Considered a hallmark of applied education,
"learning by doing" will be this book's primary emphasis. Exercises
are designed to sharpen critical thinking, immerse students in real
world dilemmas, and provide them with tools for conflict
resolution. The emotional intelligence promoted by working through
in-text scenarios is a soughtafter employee trait-one that is
desired by classmates and career centers alike. Unfortunately,
people skills at work have long been ignored in traditional college
curricula. As a result, schools are creating graduates who possess
technical know-how but not the skill set to effectively navigate
personal encounters. The "soft skills" of people savvy, which have
been deemed crucial to employee success, are in large part absent
from college offerings. By navigating carefully constructed
scenarios, web quests, learning modules, and "teachable moments,"
readers will develop a keen awareness of what it takes to be a
respectful person. Moreover, they will gain expertise in what The
Society for Human Resource Management has deemed a critical skill
set. Exercises to strengthen incivility awareness are designed not
only to prevent potential conflict, but to create change agents
within the business arena. Completion of this workbook will provide
people with a competitive advantage-and their institution and
workplace with a more courteous populace.

Karl Patterson Schmidt was one of America's most influential
naturalists. In his special field of herpetology-the study of
reptiles and amphibians-he made fascinating discoveries about the
habits of snakes and their environment. This biography follows his
exciting career from his boyhood in Lake Forest, Illinois, through
his college days at Cornell, his participation in geological
expeditions, his first job as a herpetologist at the American
Museum of Natural History, and his later expeditions which took him
all over the world. As you trace the path of Schmidt's career, you
can follow his footsteps with a series of fun projects including:
Finding Reptiles and Amphibians and Assembling a Scrap Book of
Herpetological Pets. All the equipment you need is inexpensive or
easily made. With patience and persistence you can find reptiles
and amphibians wherever you happen to live.
In Arguing with People, Michael A. Gilbert shows how recent
developments in the field of Argumentation Theory have bearing on
the arguments we encounter in everyday life. Research that had
previously been restricted to scholarly journals and monographs is
made accessible and, more importantly, useful to the reader.
Gilbert emphasises the value of understanding context,
understanding who you are arguing with and knowing how to use that
information to fruitfully settle disagreements. This book expands
the argumentative toolkit and shows how often-neglected skills such
as empathy and tone can be applied to the hurly-burly contexts of
real arguing. Interesting examples and sample dialogues are
provided to demonstrate tangible ways in which the book's lessons
can be applied. Partner exercises provide opportunities to
role-play and practise the interpersonal skills developed
throughout the book.
How to Win an Argument is designed to provide you with the tools
you need to improve your rhetorical and critical skills. Since we
constantly argue at work, home, and even in casual conversation,
improving that ability is extremely important. This book will
enable you to choose your arguments carefully and prevent you from
being misled by fallacies and empty rhetoric. It will increase your
insight and perception of the positions presented to you, decrease
your gullibility, and replace it with a healthy skepticism. The
practical information in this guide will sharpen your ears and your
mind, making it more likely that the right response will occur to
you at the right moment, rather than hours later. The third edition
contains a new chapter on emotion and additional examples for each
chapter. Using this book will aid you in communicating effectively,
avoiding conflict, and understanding the myriad arguments you are
faced with every day.
