The 1960s represented a defining turning point in the politics and cultures of western societies. The emergence of a mass culture, the explosion of pop and new art forms, the rise of new left social movements in the wake of 1968, and the first signs of a more global politics brought into question long-held assumptions. The articulation of new ideas of liberation, equality and identity and the arrival of the so-called cultural revolution combined to remake new forms of community. But what of the lasting political and cultural legacies of the sixties?

Summer Schools at Belgerati, Italy in 1972 and Ajaccio, Corsica in 1975 on the topic of "Solid -State IOllics" dealt with fundamental aspects of solid-state electro chemistry and materials science. The application of specific solid ionic conductors played a significant role in the Science Committee Institute on "Materials for Advanced Batteries" held at Aussois, France in 1979. Interest in these and related fields has grown substantially over this period, and is sustained today. Research and development programmes exist within universities, governmental research laboratories and industry, worldwide and a series of international conferences and collaborations have been set up. Advanced batteries, both secondary and primary, have a potentially important role o play in the development of many areas of tech nology in the late 20th century and beyond. Applications include stationary storage, vehicle traction and remote power sources, as well as industrial and domestic cordless products and consumer and military electronics. The concept of an all-so lid-state battery is not new but, until recently, their performance has precluded their use in other than specialist low power, primary, applications. Recent materials' developments, however, make the solid-state battery a real possibility in all of the application sectors mentioned above. Further, such cells offer many attractive features over alternative present-day and advanced systems."

This monograph examines the rear battle to determine if current self-defense doctrine is consistent with the tenets of AirLand Battle and the principles of war. It investigates the importance successful defense has on both the tactical and operational missions assigned to the total force, analyses current self-defense doctrine, and examines alternatives which might enhance operations in the rear area. The analysis shows that current doctrine is inconsistent with the tenets of AirLand Battle and the principle of war. Changes are needed to optimize self-defense capability. It also reinforces the need to look at rear operations as one of three components of the total battle and recognizes that rear operations are critical to success in the close and deep battles.

Using the historical case study method of examination, this monograph reviews the interrelationship of national power, strategy, and operational plans. It surveys the national power, strategic goals, and war plans of five countries prior to the First World War. The five countries selected for review are Germany, Austria-Hungary, England, France, and Russia. The paper provides a background summary of conditions in Europe prior to the outbreak of war, reviews the factors which influenced each country's national power capability, surveys the relative strengths and weaknesses of the potential antagonists, examines strategic goals and operational plans, and analyzes the linkage between power, strategic goals, and plans. Four conclusions are reached. First, a relationship exists between national power, strategy, and plans. Second, resource availability must drive the development of strategy and plans. Third, strategy and plans must be based on realistic conditions. Fourth, regardless of the quality of the calculations, strategy, or plans, the "fog of war" may cause them to be wrong.
