Turning Your Mess Into A Message (Hardcover): Dr Josef a. Howard Turning Your Mess Into A Message (Hardcover)
Dr Josef a. Howard
R567 Discovery Miles 5 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dr. Howard has crafted a careful and balanced blend of Bible exposition, theology, real-life illustrations from his vast ministerial experience, and practical applications to those who yearn for their lives to be transformed from a messy situation to a message that honors and glorifies God.

Each chapter expounds the miraculous way God used an unlikely individual with a messy life and turned his or her life into a positive message. The woman at the well, Zacchaeus, Jabez, Ruth, the thief on the cross, and Jephthah all faced challenging circumstances. Sin, genetics, the unexpected death of a spouse, rebellion, and poor family heritage placed these Bible characters in the "most likely not to succeed" category. All had three strikes against them.

God, in His infinite mercy and grace, had a plan for each of these lives. He turned their mess into a positive message. Regardless of what mess you find your life to be in, this book gives practical ways of how to get out. Everyone faces trials and difficulties in life. Dr. Howard likens the trials and difficulties in life to "potholes." Potholes appear out of nowhere - unexpectedly - and can be destructive and hurtful and take away our joy and sense of well being. Dr. Howard says, "Being a Christian does not mean that we will not be faced with trials and tribulations, which are like potholes in our lives (some are big while others are small)." Regardless of how messy your life is or how many potholes are causing you concern, "Turning Your Mess into a Message" will give you hope and lead you to the Savior, who alone can turn your life around. He did it for the six Bible characters expounded upon in the book and He continues to change and transform messy lives into a message today.

R6,929 Discovery Miles 69 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The enormous potential of siRNA as a therapeutic has led to an explosion of interest from the scientific community. There has been intense interest from Big Pharma to capitalise on this new technology but the fact remains that delivery is a key determinant in realizing the full clinical potential of RNA interference. There is an urgent need for better delivery methods to take this technology forward. This book addresses the role of different RNAi molecules in cellular processes as rational for diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. This book will cover RNAi therapeutic design to optimize siRNA potency and reduce off-target effects and current delivery technologies to overcome both intracellular and extracellular barriers. The reader will gain an insight into RNA interference from the cellular mechanisms to screening to siRNA design right through to diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

This title is a comprehensive text that addresses key aspects of nanomedicine such as properties occurring at the nanoscale that have unique medical effects, great molecular knowledge of the human body and disease processes, and apparent clinical translation as opposed to narrow insufficient texts that address only a few topics and attempt to "rebrand" established drug delivery. It will clearly define the field which is needed due to the immaturity and broad nature of the field. The book is aligned with both the USA and European roadmaps for nanomedicine and will address initiatives taken in Asia that ensures timely and relevant content. In-depth chapters ensure each section is adequately covered. The nanopharmaceutical section focuses on novel drug delivery systems relevant to nanomedicine and the book has an extensive section on immune recognition at the nanoscale which has implications for in vivo applications of nanomedicines.

Commercial Plant-Produced Recombinant Protein Products - Case Studies (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): John A. Howard, Elizabeth E. Hood Commercial Plant-Produced Recombinant Protein Products - Case Studies (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)

Attention has recently turned to using plants as hosts for the production of commercially important proteins. The twelve case studies in this volume present successful strategies for using plants to produce industrial and pharmaceutical proteins and vaccine antigens. They examine in detail projects that have commercial potential or products that have already been commercialized, illustrating the advantages that plants offer over bacterial, fungal or animal cell-culture hosts. There are many indications that plant protein production marks the beginning of a new paradigm for the commercial production of proteins that, over the next decade, will expand dramatically.

Mobile Lifeworlds - An Ethnography of Tourism and Pilgrimage in the Himalayas (Paperback): Christopher A. Howard Mobile Lifeworlds - An Ethnography of Tourism and Pilgrimage in the Himalayas (Paperback)
Christopher A. Howard
R1,405 Discovery Miles 14 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mobile Lifeworlds illustrates how the imaginaries and ideals of Western travellers, especially those of untouched nature and spiritual enlightenment, are consistent with media representations of the Himalayan region, romanticism and modernity at large. Blending tourism and pilgrimage, travel across Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and Northern India is often inspired and oriented by a search for authenticity, adventure and Otherness. Such valued ideals are shown, however, to be contested by the very forces and configurations that enable global mobility. The role ubiquitous media and mobile technologies now play in framing travel experiences are explored, revealing a situation in which actors are neither here nor there, but increasingly are 'inter-placed' across planetary landscapes. Beyond institutionalised religious contexts and the visiting of sacred sites, the author shows how a secular religiosity manifests in practical, bodily encounters with foreign environments. This book is unique in that it draws on a dynamic and innovative set of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives, especially phenomenology, the mobilities paradigm and philosophical anthropology. The volume breaks fresh ground in pilgrimage, tourism and travel studies by unfolding the complex relationships between the virtual, imaginary and corporeal dynamics of contemporary mobile lifeworlds.

Gendered Situations, Gendered Selves - A Gender Lens on Social Psychology (Hardcover, Second Edition): Jocelyn A. Hollander,... Gendered Situations, Gendered Selves - A Gender Lens on Social Psychology (Hardcover, Second Edition)
Jocelyn A. Hollander, Daniel G. Renfrow, Judith A. Howard
R3,027 Discovery Miles 30 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The second edition of Gendered Situations, Gendered Selves has been updated throughout, and is an ideal introduction to the discussion of gender in social psychology. The book examines the basic underpinnings of everyday interaction: from how we think, to who we see ourselves and others to be, to how we interact with others. Each of these processes is based on both social psychology and gender (as differentiated from sex), as well as our racial backgrounds, ethnic heritages, socioeconomic circumstances, sexualities, and national histories. The authors present and critique each of the major theories of social psychology, social exchange, social cognition, and symbolic interaction. In doing so, the book introduces a full array of key concepts in social psychology--perception, stereotyping, attribution, self-presentation, impression management, defining social situations, exchanging resources, and balancing power and dependence in social relations. The book also discusses two fundamental aspects of human behavior--the dynamics of helping and harming. The second edition incorporates discussions of contemporary psychological and sociological research and features powerful new examples, including 9/11 and the election of Barack Obama.

Seasons of Learning - Talks to Graduates on Life After College (Hardcover, New): Vernon A. Howard Seasons of Learning - Talks to Graduates on Life After College (Hardcover, New)
Vernon A. Howard
R2,041 Discovery Miles 20 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first in-depth treatment of the school/work transition, this book raises the level of discussion above simple "how to" strategies. Howard considers the values, choices, responsibilities, and challenges facing the student leaving college or graduate/professional school. The transition from school to work entails a reconstruction of experience and of the self that marks the beginning of a crucial stage in the course of a life. Besides shifts in the aims and values attached to learning for school and for work, there are commitments and costs involved in professional life that require special consideration if one is to avoid the hazards of burnout, narrowness, and the loss of cherished skills. To survive personally and professionally in the new, ruthless economy, one needs to be highly adaptable and able to communicate well. In this thought-provoking book Howard underscores the utility of a broad liberal education as a preparation for work.

Black Labor, White Sugar - Caribbean Braceros and Their Struggle for Power in the Cuban Sugar Industry (Hardcover): Philip A.... Black Labor, White Sugar - Caribbean Braceros and Their Struggle for Power in the Cuban Sugar Industry (Hardcover)
Philip A. Howard
R1,319 Discovery Miles 13 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Early in the twentieth century, the Cuban sugarcane industry faced a labor crisis when Cuban and European workers balked at the inhumane conditions they endured in the cane fields. Rather than reforming their practices, sugar companies gained permission from the Cuban government to import thousands of black workers from other Caribbean colonies, primarily Haiti and Jamaica. Black Labor, White Sugar illuminates the story of these immigrants, their exploitation by the sugarcane companies, and the strategies they used to fight back. Philip A. Howard traces the socioeconomic and political circumstances in Haiti and Jamaica that led men to leave their homelands to cut, load, and haul sugarcane in Cuba. Once there, the field workers, or braceros, were subject to marginalization and even violence from the sugar companies, which used structures of race, ethnicity, color, and class to subjugate these laborers. Howard argues that braceros drew on their cultural identities-from concepts of home and family to spiritual worldviews-to interpret and contest their experiences in Cuba. They also fought against their exploitation in more overt ways. As labor conditions worsened in response to falling sugar prices, the principles of anarcho-syndicalism converged with the Pan-African philosophy of Marcus Garvey to foster the evolution of a protest culture among black Caribbean laborers. By the mid-1920s, this identity encouraged many braceros to participate in strikes that sought to improve wages as well as living and working conditions. The first full-length exploration of Haitian and Jamaican workers in the Cuban sugarcane industry, Black Labor, White Sugar examines the industry's abuse of thousands of black Caribbean immigrants, and the braceros' answering struggle for power and self-definition.
