Who should provide food, and through what relationships? Whose livelihoods should be protected? For over 20 years the peasant farmers of La Via Campesina have been engaged in the fight against injustice, hunger and poverty under the banner of food sovereignty, 'the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems'. They campaign for healthy, sustainable alternatives to an industrial food system controlled by agribusiness companies and the architects of unfair trade agreements. This book draws on grounded case studies of agrarian movements in the Americas and Europe as exemplars of a 'power shift,' as local opposition scales up to global action in an effort to wrest control of our food away from transnational corporations and back to communities.
This work details the methods of deciphering and reading the coding found on Individual Aircraft Record Cards (IARCs). The work shows how to read the 21 formats of record cards to help the reader or researcher identify the reporting or possessing unit, activity, station, and important dates for individual aircraft. The author also details where and how to obtain IARC microfilm rolls.
This historical text is the personal diary of Colonel Samuel R. Harris, detailing his life as a Commander of one of the first B-29 Heavy Bombardment Groups to reach the Marianas Islands in 1944. Focused intensely on his life in the Group and his relationship with the 73rd Bomb Wing's operations, the first section of the book is an intimate portrait of war. In order to provide a contextual portrait of the B-29 war against Japan, the second half of the text details all aspects of how the 73rd Bomb Wing was engaged in the war against Japan. Together, they provide a well-rounded portrait of America--and one American--at war.]
The regulation of innovation and the optimal design of legal institutions in an environment of uncertainty are two of the most important policy challenges of the twenty-first century. Innovation is critical to economic growth. Regulatory design decisions, and, in particular, competition policy and intellectual property regimes, can have profound consequences for economic growth. However, remarkably little is known about the relationship between innovation, competition, and regulatory policy. Any legal regime must attempt to assess the tradeoffs associated with rules that will affect incentives to innovate, allocative efficiency, competition, and freedom of economic actors to commercialize the fruits of their innovative labors. The essays in this book approach this critical set of problems from an economic perspective, relying on the tools of microeconomics, quantitative analysis, and comparative institutional analysis to explore and begin to provide answers to the myriad challenges facing policymakers.

The first edition of this book was the indispensable reference for researchers in the theory of pro-p groups. In this second edition the presentation has been improved and important new material has been added. The first part of the book is group-theoretic. It develops the theory of pro-p groups of finite rank, starting from first principles and using elementary methods. Part II introduces p-adic analytic groups: by taking advantage of the theory developed in Part I, it is possible to define these, and derive all the main results of p-adic Lie theory, without having to develop any sophisticated analytic machinery. Part III, consisting of new material, takes the theory further. Among those topics discussed are the theory of pro-p groups of finite coclass, the dimension subgroup series, and its associated graded Lie algebra. The final chapter sketches a theory of analytic groups over pro-p rings other than the p-adic integers.
The B-29 Superfortress was for many years a cornerstone of American military aviation. Best known as a bomber, it also served in reconnaissance, as a tanker, and as a rescue plane. It was a crucial tool for American and Allied forces during World War II, Korea and beyond. This operational history of the B-29 gives in-depth information on the career of each plane. A list of the names and serial numbers of the planes, each plane's history from delivery date to removal from service, a description of the B-29's physical characteristics and performance parameters, and a description of the five B-29 variants are provided. Sections of the book give complete mission data for the B-29's World War II service in the China-Burma-India theater of operations, operations over Japan, aerial mining missions and test atomic bombing runs.

Welcome to the world of the AR-15 Without a doubt, the AR-15 and AR-10 rifles are two of America's most popular semi-auto long guns. Every day, new shooters are exploring these durable, reliable, and accurate rifles and finding new and fun ways to use them. Now, in the "Gun Digest Shooter's Guide to the AR-15," author Richard Mann examines what has truly become the most versatile rifle in America. Inside you'll find:
Growing up, kids need a sense of place, and that sense comes from a feeling that they belong to a home, a family, a community, a landscape. In The Anhinga Tree, a work of fiction, three kids who happen to be cousins embark on an adventure that reinforces their sense of place and their connection to one another. And what a place for an adventure We travel with the kids on the roads and canals of Fox Trail, a great place to live that is located between the edge of the Everglades and Lion Country Safari in Palm Beach County, Florida, on the way from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Okeechobee. And our time with the cousins in Fox Trail is only the beginning of the adventure. Illustrations and maps by William A. Mann illuminate the journey.
While Anthony Mann was living in his dying body, he spent a lot of time in cyberspace. There he was flying free of his increasingly less-useful limbs and from the other limitations ALS imposed on him, participating in the world available to him there, working on computer-related projects and issues, enjoying his freedom and exercising his strengths. He continued his lifelong habit of thinking about his life and actions, analyzing and ordering his experiences, remembering and reliving. When he was ready to seize the opportunity to write a memoir of what he knew would be a not-nearly-long-enough life, he did so with pride and dedication, determined to make sure that he would finish getting his story told before his time ran out. And he did get his story told, a story that includes superheroes both fictional and real: his greatest hero, Randy Couture of mixed martial arts (MMA) fame, plays a starring role as he goes from inspiring Anthony from afar to giving him an up-close and personal experience of the world of MMA that was one of the highlights of Anthony's life. Anthony's story is about the ordinary events of growing up as well as events that, in retrospect, can seem extraordinary: going to school, making friends, finding a place in the day-to-day world, falling in love, celebrating holidays, traveling, working, playing. Resting on the structure of the chronology of his life and enlivened by the drama found in events both great and small, Anthony's story lays out the pieces of the puzzle formed when life presents a stark pathway with no easy exit. Gifted, intelligent, loving parents and a strong network of loving family, friends, and colleagues provide light near the darkness of a terrible diagnosis; the harsh reality of diminishing mobility stands next to the pleasures of the trip of a lifetime and vast technological resources that bring entertainment and the world into a home modified to accommodate Anthony's changed circumstances. Hope and despair, love and anxiety, peace and pain. The story of how this young man lived in his dying body and of what happened along the way and how he fared on his journey offers a look into a kaleidoscope of fate, family, and personal history, the theme of the hero played out on a twenty-first-century stage.
How can science and the spirituality of the great religions help us all in our quest for global harmony? How can artists, philosophers and mystics reveal to us who we are? How can studying our civilization's timeline show us where we came from? How can meditation, prayer and the desire to recognize the divinity in each and every one of us inspire us to create a freer, safer and better world?
