Osteosarcoma in Adolescents and Young Adults: New Developments and Controversies (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): G.Bennett Humphrey, H.... Osteosarcoma in Adolescents and Young Adults: New Developments and Controversies (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)
G.Bennett Humphrey, H. Schraffordt Koops, W.M. Molenaar, A. Postma
R8,198 Discovery Miles 81 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Osteosarcoma in Adolescents and Young Adults: New Developments and Controversies is the fifth volume in the series Cancer Treatment, and Research' devoted to pediatric oncology. Like its immediate predecessor, Hodgkin's Disease in Children: Controversies and Current Practice, this volume also deals with the current state of affairs: where do researchers differ in opinions or firmly held beliefs? What does the future hold for research or for the patients who have benefited from research and are now cured? etc. The first part deals with preclinical and clinical issues that relate to the disease and the second part deals with the results of recent trials and in some cases ongoing trials. It could be argued that section B Pharmacology, Section D Radiotherapy and Section E Surgery of part one belong to part two; however in these sections we have tried to focus on one discipline and in part two, we have tried to focus on the results of multidisciplinary trials. A third part includes a few critiques and editorial comments. This volume was prepared and planned for both basic and clinical oncologists. It is hoped that the basic scientists will gain some insight into the problems of their clinical colleagues and that the clinicians will be willing to read to the more basic articles. It is not a text for students (or for that matter physicians) who want all things to be laid out in black and white'. But it is a text for those students who want to know how vibrant this field of research is and are willing to stand in awe of how much research needs to be done.

Understanding and Improving Crop Root Function (Hardcover): Peter J. Gregory Understanding and Improving Crop Root Function (Hardcover)
Peter J. Gregory; Contributions by Johannes A. Postma, Christopher K. Black, Wei Xuan, Yuanming Xie, …

"...a well-curated collection of chapters that provides a broad state-of-the-art survey of how roots contribute to plant crop performance and edaphic stress tolerance...Given the urgency to deploy sustainable and resilient agricultural technologies, this excellent collection demonstrates how novel approaches and collaborative trans-disciplinarity can prepare the field of root biology for transformative, real-world impacts." (Annals of Botany) Recent decades have seen a dramatic increase in research on plant roots. A deeper understanding of the complex ways roots interact with soils is making it possible to 'design' roots to optimise nutrient/water uptake in low-input environments, as well as deliver other benefits such as improved soil health and reduced nutrient leaching. Continued research is needed in this important area so that it can contribute to more sustainable, 'climate-smart' crop production. Understanding and improving crop root function features authoritative reviews of current research in all aspects of root science, including root growth regulators, root anatomy, nutrient acquisition and root system architecture. This collection discusses the responses of plant roots to abiotic and biotic stresses and how understanding nutrient uptake can be exploited to optimise root function. The book concludes with a dedicated section on methods used to improve crop root function and crop nutrient use efficiency, such as the use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). With its eminent editor and international array of expert authors, Understanding and improving crop root function will be a standard reference for university researchers in crop physiology and nutrition, government and other agencies supporting agriculture, companies supplying crop nutrition products and services, as well as farmers.
