This book presents an up-to-date account of research in important topics of fuzzy group theory. It concentrates on the theoretical aspects of fuzzy subgroups of a group. It includes applications to abstract recognition problems and to coding theory. The book begins with basic properties of fuzzy subgroups. Fuzzy subgroups of Hamiltonian, solvable, P-Hall, and nilpotent groups are discussed. Construction of free fuzzy subgroups is determined. Numerical invariants of fuzzy subgroups of Abelian groups are developed. The problem in group theory of obtaining conditions under which a group can be expressed as a direct product of its normal subgroups is considered. Methods for deriving fuzzy theorems from crisp ones are presented and the embedding of lattices of fuzzy subgroups into lattices of crisp groups is discussed as well as deriving membership functions from similarity relations. The material presented makes this book a good reference for graduate students and researchers working in fuzzy group theory.
This book is an investigation of the mathematical and philosophical factors underlying the discovery of the concept of noneuclidean geometries, and the subsequent extension of the concept of space. Chapters one through five are devoted to the evolution of the concept of space, leading up to chapter six which describes the discovery of noneuclidean geometry, and the corresponding broadening of the concept of space. The author goes on to discuss concepts such as multidimensional spaces and curvature, and transformation groups. The book ends with a chapter describing the applications of nonassociative algebras to geometry.
The quest for a theoretical framework for understanding urban policy-making has been a recurring focus of research into local governments. Civic culture is a means for understanding how municipal policy-makers weigh the interests of different groups, govern the local community, frame local goals, engage in decision-making, and ultimately select and implement public policies. While it seems that culture 'matters' in local policy making, how to measure culture in a valid and replicable fashion presents a significant challenge which the authors address in this book. They present their findings of a large multi-city research project to explore the nature of civic culture in cities in the US and Canada. The focus of their analysis is on three overarching 'systems' of community power system, the community value system, and the community decision-making system. The authors address a number of questions around the nature of civic culture and the relationships between the three systemic elements of civic culture, to refine and apply a more sophisticated theory of urban policy-making.
"Psychotic States" brings together a number of Herbert Rosenfeld's papers written between 1946 and 1964 dealing with the psychopathology and treatment of various psychotic and borderline conditions from a psychoanalytic viewpoint. Taking the theories and techniques developed by Melanie Klein in her work with infants and young children, Dr Rosenfeld investigated their application to a range of psychotic syndromes, including chronic and acute schizophrenia, severe hypochondriasis, drug addiction, severe depression and manic depression, both to determine their possible therapeutic efficacy and to see what light they might shed on the etiology of the psychosis.

Competitive Manufacturing uses the rural South, the most industrialized rural region of the nation, to examine the strengths and weaknesses of manufacturing as the basis for economic growth. Using historical analysis, surveys, and intensive case studies, the author analyzes the technological capabilities of rural manufacturing, the factors that influence the decision to modernize, and the effects of technology on education and work. Comparative studies in Denmark and Italy point to new directions for US economic development policy.

The Sound of Medieval Song is a study of how sacred and secular music was actually sung during the Middle Ages. The source of the information is the actual notation in the early manuscripts as well as statements found in approximately 50 theoretical treatises written between the years 600-1500. The writings describe various singing practices and both desirable and undesirable vocal techniques, providing a fairly accurate picture of how singers approached the music of the period. Detailed descriptions of the types and uses of improvised ornament indicate that in performance the music was highly ornate, and included trill, gliss, reverberation, pulsation, pitch inflection, non-diatonic tones, and cadenza-like passages of various lengths. The treatises also provide evidence of stylistic differences in various geographical locations. McGee draws conclusions about the kind of vocal production and techniques necessary in order to reproduce the music as it was performed during the Middle Ages, aligning the practices much more closely with those of the Middle East than has ever been previously acknowledged.
The Russian edition of this book appeared in 1976 on the hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of the historic day of February 23, 1826, when LobaeevskiI delivered his famous lecture on his discovery of non-Euclidean geometry. The importance of the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry goes far beyond the limits of geometry itself. It is safe to say that it was a turning point in the history of all mathematics. The scientific revolution of the seventeenth century marked the transition from "mathematics of constant magnitudes" to "mathematics of variable magnitudes. " During the seventies of the last century there occurred another scientific revolution. By that time mathematicians had become familiar with the ideas of non-Euclidean geometry and the algebraic ideas of group and field (all of which appeared at about the same time), and the (later) ideas of set theory. This gave rise to many geometries in addition to the Euclidean geometry previously regarded as the only conceivable possibility, to the arithmetics and algebras of many groups and fields in addition to the arith metic and algebra of real and complex numbers, and, finally, to new mathe matical systems, i. e. , sets furnished with various structures having no classical analogues. Thus in the 1870's there began a new mathematical era usually called, until the middle of the twentieth century, the era of modern mathe matics.
This book results from a Workshop on Multiresolution Image Processing and Analysis, held in Leesburg, VA on July 19-21, 1982. It contains updated ver sions of most of the papers that were presented at the Workshop, as well as new material added by the authors. Four of the presented papers were not available for inclusion in the book: D. Sabbah, A computing with connections approach to visual recognition; R. M. Haralick, Fitting the gray tone intensity surface as a function of neighborhood size; E. M. Riseman, Hierarchical boundary formation; and W. L. Mahaffey, L. S. Davis, and J. K. Aggarwal, Region correspondence in multi-resolution images taken from dynamic scenes. The number and variety of papers indicates the timeliness of the H0rkshop. Multiresolution methods are rapidly gaining recognition as an important theme in image processing and analysis. In the spring of 1982, we began our collaboration while on sabbatical in Jerusa lem. Working together at Hadassah Medical Center, we discovered that we had overlapping and complementary interests. The wonderful surroundings com bined with a warm friendship nourished the development of this book. E. G. S: s interest in neuropsychology, cognitive function, and diagnostic clas sification and A. A R: s interest in the development of normal sexual behavior, incest and its consequences for psychopathology, and psychoanalytic thought provided a broad perspective on the field of somatoform disorders. For E. G. S., Lawrence A. Lockman, a faculty member in pediatric neurology at the Univer sity of Minnesota who has a great interest in these cases, was particularly helpful. Many of the ideas on case management came from his admonitions to the house staff on rounds regarding proper management of patients and families. When we began to write the book in the fall of 1984, two students of E. G. S: s became involved. Norman Cohen, then a post doc, was very interested in pain and biofeedback, having worked extensively in the Pain Clinic at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. He was seeing many of the children in the clinic who required biofeedback and was especially interested in those with headache. He agreed to write the chapter on headache."

Since its publication in 1976, the original volume has been warmly received. We have decided to put out this updated paperback edition so that the book can be more accessible to students. This paperback edition is essentially the same as the original hardcover volume except for the addition of a new chapter (Chapter 7) which reviews the recent advances in pattern recognition and image processing. Because of the limitations of length, we can only report the highlights and point the readers to the literature. A few typographical errors in the original edition were corrected. Contributions to the blossom of this area have come from many disciplines, including statistics, psychology, linguistics, computer science, biology, taxonomy, switching theory, communication theory, control theory, and operations research. Many different approaches have been proposed and a number of books have been published. Most books published so far deal with the decision-theoretic (or statistical) approach or the syntactic (or linguistic) is still far from its maturity, many approach.

Between 1978 and 1985 Dr Herbert Rosenfeld was one of a number of British analysts invited by a group of Societa di Psicoanalisi Italiani members to conduct a series of seminars and supervisions for the purpose of deepening and refining that group's clinical skills and theoretical understanding. In this seminal work, the authors argue that there are distinct local factors that shape the environment of economic development decision-making. These factors, taken together, constitute a community?s local civic culture. Using survey and case study data from U.S. and Canadian cities, the authors make the case that different cultures will produce different types of economic development policies, and that local civic culture will effect the whole array of local policies. The focus on economic development policy provides a window on local decision-making and allows for the development of a theory, introduced by the authors, about the role of local civic culture in framing local decisions of all types. This ultimately provides a theoretical vehicle for categorizing cities and predicting policy outcomes. The book concludes with an overview of what is known about the economic development process and highlights the questions raised about that knowledge by the analyses used here and the focus on civic cultures.
