The crowncourts and lords' courts were far more than arenas of litigation, in the modern sense. They had become the nexus of local governance by the middle of the seventeenth century, a rich breeding ground for men who controlled the villages, towns, and bailiwicks of France. Yet even as the centralizing state was reaching its zenith under Louis XIV, the king's largest permanent bureaucracy became increasingly alienated and cut adrift from the crown, many decades before the French Revolution. In The King's Bench, Zoe Schneider vividly brings to life the teeming world of the local courts, with their magistrates and jailers, townspeople and peasants. Together they contested that vital border where the private world of families and property collided with the public commonwealth. Schneider has assembled a roster of more than 100 men and women of letters, those constituting what he calls the 'generation of 1630'. While diverse, and indeed divided between those who hewed to traditional humanism and others more attuned to 'modern' linguistic and literary developments, this cohort largely shared a commitment to a cultural renewal of France, its rise to prominence in the geopolitical arena of Europe, and the emergence of a strong centralized monarchy. In 1762, British forces mobilized more than 230 ships and 26,000 soldiers, sailors, and enslaved Africans to attack Havana, one of the wealthiest and most populous ports in the Americas. They met fierce resistance. Spanish soldiers and local militias in Cuba, along with enslaved Africans who were promised freedom, held off the enemy for six suspenseful weeks. In the end, the British prevailed, but more lives were lost in the invasion and subsequent eleven-month British occupation of Havana than during the entire Seven Years' War in North America. The book explores both the interconnected histories of the British and Spanish empires and the crucial role played by free people of color and the enslaved in the creation and defense of Havana. Nur einzelne groBere und groBte Betriebsstatten widmen sich der gleichzeitigen Herstellung verschiedener Fabrikationstypen, wobei aber fast stets eine Hauptgruppe vorwiegt und die Erzeugnisse der anderen mehr nebenbei geschaffen werden. So entwickelte sich als selbstandiger Zweig der Fabrikation die Herstellung der leichteren Leinengewebe in ihren auBerordentlich zahlreichen Sorten, die vielfach wieder unter sich spezialisiert sind. Ferner die Gebildweberei, die in Sonderbetrieben auf eine hohe Stufe der Entwicklung gebracht wurde, die Taschentuchweberei, die sich in Deutschland als eine der wenigen export fahigen Branchen ausbildete, und endlich die Sch werwe berei, die eine statt liche Anzahl von Vertretern zu verzeichnen hat. In diesem Bande werden diese Zweige der Leinenweberei wohl zum ersten Male eingehend dargestellt. Da in vielen Punkten groBe Ahnlichkeit bzw. Gleichartigkeit mit der Herstellung von Baumwollgeweben besteht, bildet dieser Teilband zugleich eine Erganzung zum Bande IV j2B dieses Handbuches (Baum wolle); in einzelnen Abschnitten (z. B. Taschentuchweberei) ist die Gewinnung des Baumwollgewebes - das he ute in diesem Zweige vielleicht 95% der Pro duktion ausmacht - gleichzeitig eingehend beschrieben.
