Plant Nutrient Acquisition - New Perspectives (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): N. Ae, J. Arihara, K. Okada, A. Srinivasan Plant Nutrient Acquisition - New Perspectives (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
N. Ae, J. Arihara, K. Okada, A. Srinivasan
R2,937 Discovery Miles 29 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

New research reveals that plants actively acquire nutrients; the acquisition process is not a passive one in which plants simply wait for dissolved nutrients to come closer to their roots. In fact plants play a far more active role than once was understood to be possible in nutrient acquisition and in adaptation to problem soils. This book presents an excellent overview and summary of new concepts of plant nutrient acquisition mechanisms, and sets forth their practical implications in crop production. The scope is wide ranging, from biochemical, molecular, and genetic analysis of nutrient acquisition to global nutritional problems. Especially noteworthy are the sections on the cell apoplast, phosphorus-solubilizing organisms, and direct uptake of macro-organic molecules. With contributions by leading scientists worldwide, the book provides an invaluable resource for researchers in plant and environmental sciences and in agronomy and other branches of agriculture.

R2,949 Discovery Miles 29 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Modern businesses generate huge volumes of accounting data on a daily basis. The recent advancements in information technology have given organizations the ability to capture and store data in an efficient and effective manner. However, there is a widening gap between this data storage and usage of the data. Business intelligence techniques can help an organization obtain and process relevant accounting data quickly and cost efficiently. Such techniques include: query and reporting tools, online analytical processing (OLAP), statistical analysis, text mining, data mining, and visualization. Business Intelligence Techniques is a compilation of chapters written by experts in the various areas. While these chapters stand on their own, taken together they provide a comprehensive overview of how to exploit accounting data in the business environment.

The genome of retroviruses contains three major coding regions for virion proteins, gag, pol and env. Gag encompasses information for nonglycosylated viral proteins that form the matrix, the capsid and the nucleoprotein structures. From pol derive reverse transcriptase and integrase, and env codes for the surface glycoproteins of the virion which consist of a transmembrane and a surface domain, linked by disulfide bonds. A viral protease is derived eitherfrom the gagorfrom the pol coding region, depending on the virus. Simple retroviruses contain only this elementary gag, pol, and env coding information. Once integrated, they are able to multiply efficiently, using the cellular transcriptional and replication machineries without intervention of viral transacting factors. Most oncogenic retroviruses belong in this category. Complex retroviruses, on the other hand, encode additional nonstructural proteins from multiply spliced messages. These proteins play important regulatory roles in the life cycle of the virus. They function as transacting factors that, in concert with cellular regulatory proteins, control viral gene expression and function and are essential components in the replication of complex retroviruses. To this category belong the lentiviruses, the spumaviruses and a group of oncogenic retroviruses that includes human T cell leukemia virus (HTLV) and bovine leukosis virus(BLV).

Trends in Biomaterials (Hardcover): G. P. Kothiyal, A. Srinivasan Trends in Biomaterials (Hardcover)
G. P. Kothiyal, A. Srinivasan
R3,257 Discovery Miles 32 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Biomaterials research requires the union of materials scientists, engineers, biologists, biomedical doctors, and surgeons. Societal implications have invoked tremendous interest in this area of research in recent years. What started as a search for strong and durable implant materials has now led to path-breaking developments in tissue engineering, targeted drug delivery, and tissue scaffolds. Viable applications of mesoporous structures, polymer biocomposites, and fibers (synthetic and natural) in the areas of clinical orthopedics, controlled drug delivery, tissue engineering, orthodontics, etc., have emerged as relatively recent concepts. This book presents recent results related to both materials aspects and implant issues. The focus is on structural, magnetic, antibacterial, bioactivity/compatibility, mechanical, and other related properties and the implication of these results on biomedical applications. The book discusses technical problems faced by the surgeon during implant fixation in total hip replacement and the selection of materials based on the patient's requirement. It also addresses recent advances in implant materials, including the reinforcement and biocompatibility issues.
