R2,877 Discovery Miles 28 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the first to focus specifically on cancer nanotheranostics. Each of the chapters that make up this comprehensive volume is authored by a researcher, clinician, or regulatory agency member known for their expertise in this field. Theranostics, the technology to simultaneously diagnose and treat a disease, is a nascent field that is growing rapidly in this era of personalized medicine. As the need for cost-effective disease diagnosis grows, drug delivery systems that can act as multifunctional carriers for imaging contrast and therapy agents could provide unique breakthroughs in oncology. Nanotechnology has enabled the development of smart theranostic platforms that can concurrently diagnose disease, start primary treatment, monitor response and initiate secondary treatments if required. In oncology, chemotherapeutics have been routinely used. Some drugs have proven effective but all carry risks of adverse side effects. There is growing interest in using remotely triggered drug delivery systems to limit cytotoxicity in the diseased area. This book reviews the use of theranostic nanoparticles for cancer applications over the past decade. First, it briefly discusses the challenges and limitations of conventional cancer treatments, and presents an overview of the use of nanotechnology in treating cancer. These introductory chapters are followed by those exploring cancer diagnosis and a myriad of delivery methods for nanotherapeutics. The book also addresses multifunctional platforms, treatment monitoring, and regulatory considerations. As a whole, the book aims to briefly summarize the development and clinical potential of various nanotheranostics for cancer applications, and to delineate the challenges that must be overcome for successful clinical development and implementation of such cancer theranostics.

The third Symposium of the Foundation for Life Sciences was held in February 1983 at the Newport Inn Conference Centre in Sydney. It was direced towards an understanding of the molecular neuropathology of muscle and nerve under a wide variety of conditions that may be induced by external agents or genetic lesions. The first session on experimental neurology explored the processes involved in maintenance of nerve and muscle function. This included many papers on myelination, studies on immune reactions affecting nerves, on synapses, and on neuronal development. This section was expanded to explore the control of muscle function in nerves, including a discussion on cross reinnervation. Toxic models of disease in the nervous system were then discussed, including pathological states induced by physical agents such as kainic acid, diphtheria toxin, and IDPN. A new dimension was added to the Symposium when for the first time psychologists participated and contributed to the session on external stressors and their effects on behavior. Heavy metals, herbicides, repetitive work, anxiety, and their effects on behavior and health were all represented. The discussion in this session attracted much interest from the participants, particularly the basic scientists.

Due to the unapparelled rise of this in-demand field, very few in the role of a project manager have the practical tools needed to successfully navigate the politics of today's corporate world. To ensure projects get completed on time and on budget, project managers need more than just technical skills--they need the right communication skills to succeed. Filled with helpful real-world examples, Project Management That Works equips project managers for success by teaching them how to: communicate with their teams as well as stakeholders; get their teams to function well; run fewer and more productive meetings; turn around failing projects; utilize data properly to make emotional conversations unemotional; and know when a project is really done. While many of project managers know how to plan a successful project in theory, Project Management That Works helps readers address the real challenges--both organizational and interpersonal--that keep projects from completion so they can accomplish their goals.

Virtue and Irony in American Democracy - Revisiting Dewey and Niebuhr (Paperback): Daniel A. Morris Virtue and Irony in American Democracy - Revisiting Dewey and Niebuhr (Paperback)
Daniel A. Morris
R1,092 Discovery Miles 10 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What virtues are necessary for democracy to succeed? This book turns to John Dewey and Reinhold Niebuhr, two of America's most influential theorists of democracy, to answer this question. Dewey and Niebuhr both implied-although for very different reasons-that humility and mutuality are important virtues for the success of people rule. Not only do these virtues allow people to participate well in their own governance, they also equip us to meet challenges to democracy generated by free-market economic policy and practices. Ironically, though, Dewey and Niebuhr quarreled with each other for twenty years and missed the opportunity to achieve political consensus. In their discourse with each other they failed to become "one out of many," a task that is distilled in the democratic rallying cry "e pluribus unum." This failure itself reflects a deficiency in democratic virtue. Thus, exploring the Dewey/Niebuhr debate with attention to their discursive failures reveals the importance of a third virtue: democratic tolerance. If democracy is to succeed, we must cultivate a deeper hospitality toward difference than Dewey and Niebuhr were able to extend to each other.

Russian Tales of Demonic Possession - Translations of Savva Grudtsyn and Solomonia (Hardcover): Marcia A. Morris Russian Tales of Demonic Possession - Translations of Savva Grudtsyn and Solomonia (Hardcover)
Marcia A. Morris
R2,449 Discovery Miles 24 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Russian Tales of Demonic Possession: Translations of Savva Grudtsyn and Solomonia is a translation from the Russian of two stories of demonic possession, of innocence lost and regained. The original versions of both tales date back to the seventeenth century, but the feats of suffering and triumph described in them are timeless. Aleksei Remizov, one of Russia's premiere modernists, recognized the relevance of the late-medieval material for his own mid-twentieth-century readers and rewrote both tales, publishing them in 1951 under the title The Demoniacs. The volume offers a new translation of the original Tale of Savva Grudtsyn as well as first-ever translations of The Tale of The Demoniac Solomonia and Remizov's Demoniacs. Russian Tales of Demonic Possession opens with an introduction that interprets and contextualizes both the late-medieval and the twentieth-century tales. By providing new critical interpretations of all four tales as well as a short discussion of the history of demons in Russia, this introduction makes an eerily exotic world accessible to today's English-speaking audiences. Savva Grudtsyn and Solomonia, the protagonists of the two tales, are young people poised on the threshold of adulthood. When demons suddenly appear to confront and overmaster them, each of them teeters on the brink of despair in a world filled with chaos and temptation. The Tale of Savva Grudtsyn and The Tale of the Demoniac Solomonia propel us forcibly into the realm of good and evil and pose hard questions: Why does evil afflict us? How does it manifest itself? How can it be overcome? Aleksey Remizov's modernist re-castings of the two stories offer compelling evidence that these same questions are very much with us today and are still in need of answers.

Honduras - Caudillo Politics and Military Rulers (Hardcover): James A. Morris Honduras - Caudillo Politics and Military Rulers (Hardcover)
James A. Morris
R3,977 Discovery Miles 39 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the retirement of longtime dictator Tiburcio Carias Andino (1932-1949), the search for institutional stability in Honduras has led to both democratically elected governments and the imposed discipline of military rule. Social and economic change has contributed to the growth of middle-class urban groups, strongly organized labor unions, and a vigorous peasant movement. The Honduran armed forces, established in modern form only after World War II, filled the vacuum of political power that developed as the Liberal and National political parties failed to address the problems created by change and national development, but the authoritarianism of military rule has been countered by historical patterns of caudillo politics. Despite the revolutionary turmoil that surrounds the country, Hondurans have successfully conducted national elections and installed a freely elected civilian government after more than ten years of military rule. It is within this mix of "traditional" and "praetorian" governing modes that Hondurans have fashioned a style of politics conducive to compromise, which accounts for the country's relative tranquillity today. In this first comprehensive study of contemporary Honduras-its land, people, economy, and politics-to be published in English, Dr. Morris also outlines the historical context that has shaped the society of this now geopolitically important nation and conditioned its political dynamics over the past three decades. His analysis illuminates the characteristics that distinguish Honduras from its Central American neighbors and that may dictate a unique course for its political evolution.

A. Morris
R1,359 Discovery Miles 13 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This revealing book illustrates how the passion for war was fostered and promoted. The author provides detailed evidence of how and why an image of Germany as a nation determined upon world hegemony was deliberately promoted by a group of British newspaper editors, proprietors and journalists. This book examines the role of these 'scaremongers'. Were they as influential as their critics claimed? Did they influence the minds of their readers and shape events? Were they guilty of creating a climate of opinion that ensured that their prophecies of inevitable Anglo-German war became fact in 1914?

The Male Heterosexual - Lust in His Loins, Sin in His Soul? (Hardcover): Larry A. Morris The Male Heterosexual - Lust in His Loins, Sin in His Soul? (Hardcover)
Larry A. Morris
R3,783 Discovery Miles 37 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"A psychological understanding of the problems associated with male sexuality is urgently needed, for this is one of the dimensions of the male code that has fallen the farthest and the fastest. . . . In this volume, Larry A. Morris provides what we most need at this time: A scholarly examination of male (hetero)sexuality in its broadest context. Dr. Morris surveys, in turn, the biological, developmental psychological, sociocultural, and historical perspectives on male sexuality; then takes up the issues of sexual dysfunctions, sexually transmitted diseases, and the modern men's movement; and finally offers 'a new formula for the cultivation of healthy male sexuality.' The writing is very clear, the material is presented in an interesting manner, and both the author's breadth of knowledge and sense of humor come through delightfully. . . . Dr. Morris, in this outstanding volume, lights the way for all of us as we attempt to reconstruct gender roles for a new millennium." --from the Foreword by Ronald F. Levant As the traditional code of masculinity erodes, emergence of the "new real man" brings a unique challenge to the continuum of a male heterosexual development. The move toward more balanced gender roles is viewed as a must for the next millennium but the process, for many men, is wrought with the confusion and loss. Timely and clearly written, The Male Heterosexual explores biological, developmental, psychological, sociocultural, and historical perspectives of male sexuality. Readers are guided by the expertise and warm humor of author Larry A. Morris on a journey into a wide range of issues surrounding male sexual development. Morris skillfully exposes those elements that need to be discarded, discusses those needing to be retained, and concludes with a new formula for the cultivation of healthy male sexuality. The Male Heterosexual is an ideal text for courses in male or gender issues and additionally, an informative and fascinating read for academics, researchers, mental health professionals, and any sophisticated lay reader interested in a very contemporary look at this issue.

Roberta A. Morris, Bruce D. Sales, Daniel W Shuman
R3,766 Discovery Miles 37 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Finding and using the appropriate legal materials can help social researchers design and execute their research more appropriately as well as assist mental health practitioners seeking answers to legal questions that their practice increasingly presents. Where can social researchers and mental health practitioners go to learn these techniques? Doing Legal Research will enable researchers and practitioners to develop a proficiency in using legal materials by describing how to use the law library to find, cite, and track cases; statutes passed by the state legislatures or Congress; legislative history of these statutes; and administrative rules, regulations, and decisions promulgated by state and federal administrative agencies (such as the Environmental Protection Agency). In addition, the book includes exercises that give readers an opportunity to go into the law library and test developing skills on genuine legal questions. After reading this book, researchers will not only have the skills that will ensure the legal relevance of their initial research question but also the ability to conduct their own evaluation of the legal materials.

Louis A. Morris
R2,761 Discovery Miles 27 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

I guess everyone has a cousin Ernest. He is the fellow of whom your mother asks . . . "Why can't you be more like your cousin Ernest?" Cousin Ernest went to the high school for genius children and got all A's, even in French. As the years went by, I lost contact with Cousin Ernest. Then last year, at a family gathering, I met him again. Sure enough, he had gone to Harvard and become a doctor, a radiologist. We began discussing his practice and he mentioned that he performs some fairly risky diagnostic tests. While legally he was compelled to tell patients about the risks they were undertaking, he said that risk disclosure was a useless exercise. "No one has ever refused to undergo the procedure," he said. It was difficult to argue with his observation that no patient ever refused to undergo his tests. I understood that the lack of refusals did not necessarily mean that risk disclosure was a useless exercise, but his underlying argument was quite compelling.
