Sport and International Development (Hardcover): Roger Levermore, Aaron Beacom Sport and International Development (Hardcover)
Roger Levermore, Aaron Beacom
R1,552 Discovery Miles 15 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Investigating the capacity of sport to act both as a conduit for traditional development assistance activities and as an agent for change in its own right, this book argues that sport can contribute to the development process, particularly where traditional development approaches have difficulty in engaging with communities.

International Diplomacy and the Olympic Movement - The New Mediators (Hardcover): Aaron Beacom International Diplomacy and the Olympic Movement - The New Mediators (Hardcover)
Aaron Beacom
R2,891 Discovery Miles 28 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the relationship between diplomatic discourse and the Olympic Movement, charting its continuity and change from an historical perspective. Using the recent body of literature on diplomacy it explores the evolution of diplomatic discourse around a number of themes, in particular the increasing range of stakeholders engaged in the Olympic bid, disability advocacy and the mainstreaming of the Paralympic Games and the evolution of the Olympic boycott. The work addresses the increasing engagement of a number of non-state actors, in particular the IOC and the IPC, as indicative of the diffusion of contemporary diplomacy. At the same time it identifies the state as continuing in the role of primary actor, setting the terms of reference for diplomatic activity beyond the pursuit of its own policy interests. Its historical investigation, based around a UK case study, provides insights into the characteristics of diplomatic discourse relating to the Games, and creates the basis for mapping the future trajectory of diplomacy as it relates to the Olympic Movement.

The Palgrave Handbook of Paralympic Studies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Ian Brittain, Aaron Beacom The Palgrave Handbook of Paralympic Studies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Ian Brittain, Aaron Beacom
R7,693 Discovery Miles 76 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This handbook provides a critical assessment of contemporary issues that define the contours of the Paralympic Movement generally and the Paralympic Games more specifically. It addresses conceptualisations of disability sport, explores the structure of the Paralympic Movement and considers key political strategic and governance issues which have shaped its development. The Palgrave Handbook of Paralympic Studies is written by a range of international authors, a number of whom are senior strategists as well as academics, and explores legacy themes through case studies of recent Paralympic games. Written in the wake of the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, it provides an assessment of contemporary challenges faced by the International Paralympic Committee and other key stakeholders in the Paralympic Movement. Its critical assessment of approaches to branding, classification, social inclusion and technological advances makes this handbook a valuable resource for undergraduate study across a range of sport and disability related programmes, as well as a point of reference for researchers and policy makers.

Creating and Managing a Sustainable Sporting Future - Issues, Pathways and Opportunities (Paperback): Vassilios Ziakas, Aaron... Creating and Managing a Sustainable Sporting Future - Issues, Pathways and Opportunities (Paperback)
Vassilios Ziakas, Aaron Beacom
R1,370 Discovery Miles 13 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Creating and Managing a Sustainable Sporting Future contributes to a critical understanding of the challenges key stakeholders across the globe encounter as they seek to manage periods of transition brought about by policy change relating to the provision of sport and physical activity. The book uncovers the global challenges in terms of managing the re-orientation of stakeholder activities and organisational strategies, in response to the aspirations for a wider range of outcomes through sport-based interventions and establishment of partnerships with non-sport sectors. It illuminates the increasingly erratic trajectory of sport development service providers, as the environment within which sport organisations operate changes - through for example, climate change, demographic shifts, changing features of local economies and alterations to the structures of local government and governance - and the responses of sport organisations to these new realities differ greatly depending on location, institutional structures and leadership. The chapters highlight the changing social, economic, environmental and policy contexts within which sports organisations operate, and explain the subsequent need for new approaches to partnership working, physical activity re-scoping and integrated education programming. Showing that the international mandate of creating active lifestyles and subsequent re-orientation of stakeholders towards physical activity cannot only contribute to re-defining sport but also in identifying novel ways for building and managing a sustainable sporting future, Creating and Managing a Sustainable Sporting Future is ideal for Sports scholars, and particularly those working on Sport Policy and Sustainable sport development. This book was originally published as a special issue of Managing Sport and Leisure.
