As a teacher of Plato in Oxford's Literae Humaniores, Walter Pater
was informed by philosophy from his earliest essays to his last
book. The Platonism of Walter Pater examines Pater's deep
engagement with Platonism throughout his career. It overturns his
reputation as a superficial aesthete known mainly for his
'Conclusion' to The Renaissance to reposition his contribution to
literature and the history of ideas. In his criticism and fiction,
including his studies on myth, Pater was influenced by several of
Plato's dialogues. Phaedrus, Symposium, Theaetetus, Cratylus, and
The Republic informed his philosophy of beauty, history, myth,
knowledge, ethics, language, and style. As a philosopher, critic,
and artist, Plato embodied what it meant to be an author to Pater,
who imitated his creative practice from vision to expression. For
Pater Platonism was also a point of contact with his
contemporaries, including Matthew Arnold and Oscar Wilde, offering
a means to take new measure of their literary relationships. Using
the interdisciplinary critical tools of Pater's own educational
milieu which combined literature, philosophy, and classics, The
Platonism of Walter Pater repositions the importance Pater's
contribution to literature and the history of ideas.

Canaan, Dim and Far argues for the importance of Pittsburgh as a
case study in analyzing African American civil rights and political
advocacy in an urban setting. Focusing on the period from the
Progressive Era to the end of World War II, this book spotlights
neglected aspects of middle-class Black activism in the decades
preceding the civil rights movement. It features a revolving cast
of social workers, medical professionals, journalists, scholars,
and lawyers whose social justice efforts included but also extended
past racial uplift ideology and respectability politics. Adam Lee
Cilli shows how these Black reformers experimented with a variety
of strategies as they moved fluidly across ideologies and political
alliances to find practical solutions to profound inequities. In
the period under study, they developed crucial social safety
supports in Black communities that buffered southern migrants
against the physical, civil, and legal impositions of northern Jim
Crow; they waged comprehensive campaigns against anti-Black
stereotypes; and they built inroads into the industrial labor
movement that accelerated Black inclusion. Committed to an
expansive vision of economic and political citizenship,
Pittsburgh's activists challenged white America to face its
contradictions and to live up to its democratic ideals.

Due to the general shift from conventional warfare to terrorism and
urban warfare by enemies of the United States in the late 20th
Century, locating and tracking individuals of interest have become
critically important. Dismount detection and tracking are vital to
provide security and intelligence in both combat and homeland
defense scenarios including base defense, combat search and rescue
(CSAR), and border patrol. This thesis focuses on exploiting recent
advances in skin detection research to reliably detect dismounts in
a scene. To this end, a signal-plus-noise model is developed to map
modeled skin spectra to the imaging response of an arbitrary
sensor, enabling an in-depth exploration of multispectral features
as they are encountered in the real world for improved skin
detection. Knowledge of skin locations within an image is exploited
to cue a robust dismount detection algorithm, significantly
improving dismount detection performance and efficiency
