Destroyed—Disappeared—Lost—Never Were (Paperback): Beate Fricke, Aden Kumler Destroyed—Disappeared—Lost—Never Were (Paperback)
Beate Fricke, Aden Kumler
R470 Discovery Miles 4 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

To write about works that cannot be sensually perceived involves considerable strain. Absent the object, art historians must stretch their methods to, or even past, the breaking point. This concise volume addresses the problems inherent in studying medieval works of art, artifacts, and monuments that have disappeared, have been destroyed, or perhaps never existed in the first place. The contributors to this volume are confronted with the full expanse of what they cannot see, handle, or know. Connecting object histories, the anthropology of images, and historiography, they seek to understand how people have made sense of the past by examining objects, images, and architectural and urban spaces. Intersecting these approaches is a deep current of reflection upon the theorization of historical analysis and the ways in which the past is inscribed into layers of evidence that are only ever revealed in the historian’s present tense. Highly original and theoretically sophisticated, this volume will stimulate debate among art historians about the critical practices used to confront the formative presence of destruction, loss, obscurity, and existential uncertainty within the history of art and the study of historical material and visual cultures. In addition to the editors, the contributors to this volume are Michele Bacci, Claudia Brittenham, Sonja Drimmer, Jaś Elsner, Peter Geimer, Danielle B. Joyner, Kristopher W. Kersey, Lena Liepe, Meekyung MacMurdie, and Michelle McCoy.

Abstraction in Medieval Art - Beyond the Ornament (Hardcover): Elina Gertsman Abstraction in Medieval Art - Beyond the Ornament (Hardcover)

Abstraction haunts medieval art, both withdrawing figuration and suggesting elusive presence. How does it make or destroy meaning in the process? Does it suggest the failure of figuration, the faltering of iconography? Does medieval abstraction function because it is imperfect, incomplete, and uncorrected-and therefore cognitively, visually demanding? Is it, conversely, precisely about perfection? To what extent is the abstract predicated on theorization of the unrepresentable and imperceptible? Does medieval abstraction pit aesthetics against metaphysics, or does it enrich it, or frame it, or both? Essays in this collection explore these and other questions that coalesce around three broad themes: medieval abstraction as the untethering of the image from what it purports to represent; abstraction as a vehicle for signification; and abstraction as a form of figuration. Contributors approach the concept of medieval abstraction from a multitude of perspectives-formal, semiotic, iconographic, material, phenomenological, epistemological.

Visualizing Hidden Structures in Art and Society In her artistic practice, Andrea Buttner combines art history with social and ethical issues. Since the early 2000s, she has been exploring a wide range of themes such as work, poverty, shame and care in monastic forms of coexistence, but also arts and crafts as a political field. Examining the ambivalent tension between aesthetics and ethics, the internationally renowned artist uses various conceptual methods. Best known for her large-scale woodcuts, Buttner has since used a variety of media, including etching, painting, photography and video installations, glass art and textiles. For her publications and exhibitions, Buttner composes her works thematically to create site-specific installations that can be experienced as gradually unfolding narratives.
