Philosophies of Integration - Immigration and the Idea of Citizenship in France and Britain (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1998): Adrian... Philosophies of Integration - Immigration and the Idea of Citizenship in France and Britain (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1998)
Adrian Favell
R2,943 Discovery Miles 29 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A comprehensive comparative study of the distinct ideas and political arguments that have shaped French and British policies towards their ethnic minorities, and the effects of these intellectual frameworks at local, national and European levels. Charting the politics and events that brought the respective institutional solutions together, the author sets out the divergent conceptualisations of citizenship, nationality, pluralism, autonomy, public order and tolerance that make up the national 'philosophies' in the two countries - republican integration in France and multicultural race relations in Britain. This new edition, published in paperback, contains a new preface bringing the volume up-to-date in the light of new legislation and progress.

The Human Face of Global Mobility - International Highly Skilled Migration in Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific:... The Human Face of Global Mobility - International Highly Skilled Migration in Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific: Comparative Urban & Community Research Volume 8 (Hardcover)
Adrian Favell
R4,090 Discovery Miles 40 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Alongside flows of trade and capital, the free movement of professionals, technical personnel, and students is seen as a key aspect of globalization. Yet not much detailed empirical research has been completed about the trajectories and experiences of these highly skilled or highly educated international migrants. What little is known about these forms of "global mobility," and the politics that surround them, contrasts with the abundant theories and accounts of other types of international migration--such as low income economic migration from less developed to core countries in the international political economy. Drawing on the work of a long-standing discussion group at the Center for Comparative and Global Research of UCLA's International Institute, this collection bridges conventional methodological divides, bringing together political scientists, sociologists, demographers, and ethnographers. It explores the reality behind assumptions about these new global migration trends. It challenges widely held views about the elite characteristics of these migrants, the costs and consequences of the brain drain said to follow from the migration of skilled workers, the determinants of national policies on high skilled migrants, and the presumed "effortlessness" of professional mobility in an integrating world. The volume also sheds new light on international student migration, the politics of temporary, non-immigrant workers in the United States, new international forms of regulating movement, and the realities of the everyday lives of multinational employees in the world's transnational cities. Key differences between the regional contexts of this migration in Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific are also emphasized.

Dialogues on Migration Policy (Hardcover, New): Marco Giugni, Florence Passy Dialogues on Migration Policy (Hardcover, New)
Marco Giugni, Florence Passy; Contributions by Adrian Favell, Gary Freeman, Marco Giugni, …
R2,942 Discovery Miles 29 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Dialogues on Migration Policy brings together leading American and European scholars of immigration politics to address migration policy. Editors Marco Giugni and Florence Passy's aim to present a number of informed "dialogues" addressing three main theoretical concerns in this field: the role of the national state in a globalizing world, the determinants of policy change, and the role of collective interests in migration policy. Adopting an unconventional format, the novelty of Dialogues on Migration Policy lies in the fact that it is structured around a series of debates among authors. In each debate, expert contributors working in different theoretical traditions and with divergent views on the subject matter confront each other followed by a commentary from a leading scholar based on her/his reading of these authors' views. These lively debates are certain to engage scholars of migration, political science, and sociology.

Pioneers of European Integration - Citizenship and Mobility in the EU (Hardcover): Ettore Recchi, Adrian Favell Pioneers of European Integration - Citizenship and Mobility in the EU (Hardcover)
Ettore Recchi, Adrian Favell
R3,571 Discovery Miles 35 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The free movement of EU citizens is the most visible sociological consequence of the remarkable process of European integration that has transformed the continent since the Second World War. Pioneers of European Integration offers the first systematic analysis of the small but symbolically potent number of Europeans who have chosen to live and work as foreigners in another member state of the EU. Based on an original survey of 5000 people moving to and from the EU's five largest countries, the book documents the demographic profile, migration choices, cultural adaptation, social mobility, political participation and media use of these pioneers of a transnational Europe, as well as opening a window to the new waves of intra-EU East-West migrations. Students and scholars of sociology, political science, human geography, anthropology, migration studies and European studies will all warmly welcome the volume. Civil servants and policymakers will also find this book an essential tool in coming to terms with the implications of EU citizenship and the transformative effects of this unprecedented European integration 'from below'.

Ettore Recchi, Adrian Favell, Fulya Apaydin, Roxana Barbulescu, Michael Braun, …
R2,277 Discovery Miles 22 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers an empirically-based view on Europeans' interconnections in everyday life. It looks at the ways in which EU residents have been getting closer across national frontiers: in their everyday experiences of foreign countries - work, travel, personal networks - but also their knowledge, consumption of foreign products, and attitudes towards foreign culture. The book considers how people reconcile their increasing cross-border interconnections and a politically separating Europe of nation states and national interests.

Immigration, Integration and Mobility - New Agendas in Migration Studies (Paperback): Adrian Favell Immigration, Integration and Mobility - New Agendas in Migration Studies (Paperback)
Adrian Favell
R1,313 Discovery Miles 13 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A compilation of Adrian Favell's innovative and agenda-setting essays which, since the late 1990s, have charted the emergence of new migration patterns and politics in Europe. Tackling in turn issues of multiculturalism, immigrant integration, free movement, high skilled mobilities, new East-West migrations and regional integration, the collection offers a comprehensive introduction to the dynamic field of international migration studies. At the same time, it poses a sharp challenge to current complacencies, challenging researchers to escape methodological nationalism and the unreflective reproduction of concepts and assumptions in the field, as well as embracing new methodologies and theoretical resources. Moving fluidly across intellectual boundaries as much as national borders, Favell points the way forward to new thinking in this burgeoning and rapidly evolving interdisciplinary field.
