Riotous Assemblies - Popular Protest in Hanoverian England (Hardcover, New): Adrian Randall Riotous Assemblies - Popular Protest in Hanoverian England (Hardcover, New)
Adrian Randall
R5,756 Discovery Miles 57 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Riotous Assemblies examines eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century England through the lens of popular disorder. Tackling both the more closely-studied forms of protest, such as food riots, industrial disorders, and political disturbances, and much less well understood occasions of popular disorder, such as tax riots, turnpike riots, riots against the establishment of the militia, and religious riot, Adrian Randall re-engages the study of riot within a wider interpretation of the forces - social, economic and political - which were transforming society. He pays particular attention to disturbances in the years between 1795 and 1812, critically examining how far they indicated the major discontinuities discerned by earlier histories of protest, or whether they retained much of the character of earlier upheaval. Based upon detailed case studies and drawing upon the most recent research, the book extends the focus of earlier studies of protest. It locates the origins of disorder within the concepts of constitutionalism and the free-born Englishman, and argues that older attitudes proved far more tenacious than many have allowed.

This collection developed from a conference held in 1992 to mark the coming of age of E.P. Thompson's seminal concept of "the moral economy". It provides a critical evaluation of the original concept and of its application to a wide and diverse field of scholarship, drawing together specialists from social and labour history, legal history, social, anthropology and historical geography who examine the developing utilization of the concept of "the moral economy" in different historical and societal contexts.

Adrian Randall
R1,226 Discovery Miles 12 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Before the Luddites is a study of the early Industrial Revolution in the English woollen cloth-making industry in the West of England and Yorkshire which concentrates upon the social background of and response to change. It is particularly concerned to explain the reasons for and the effect of Luddism. This book argues that resistance to machinery had a long history before the Luddite disturbances of 1811–12 and that this response to change sprang from a community culture which was deep-rooted and hostile to the values of economic individualism embodied by the new economy and to laissez-faire.

Fugitive psychics are hunted by the Bureau of Counterpsychic Affairs, or Countermind. Alan Izaki is one such fugitive, as well as a hacker, grifter, and thief. Countermind agent Jack Smith is hunting him through the twisted underbelly of Hong Kong. But Alan possesses a secret so dangerous and profound it will not only shake Smith's loyalties, but the foundations of their society. And Alan isn't the only one on the run. Rogue psychic Arissa binti Noor escapes Countermind, in search of brilliant game designer Feng Huang. She hopes that together, they can destroy the government's intrusive Senex monitoring system. Their goals seem at odds, and their lives are destined to collide. When they do, three very different people must question their alliances and their future, because everything is about to change.
