Stem Cells in Medicine, Volume 199 in the Progress in Molecular Biology and Translational Science series, provides the most topical and informative research in the field of stem cells. Sections in this new release update on an Introduction to stem cells, Stem cell engineering, Xeno-free culture and proliferation of hPSCs on 2D biomaterials, 3D scaffold preparation for stem cell culture and differentiation, GMP grade production of hPSCs, Human hepatic stem cell assay, Cardiomyocyte cell sheets derived from hPSCs and muscle cells for myocardial infarction treatment, Stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis, hPSC-derived RPE transplantation for the treatment of macular degeneration, and much more. The book provides not only fundamental aspects and cultural and production methods of stem cells, but also the critical engineering aspects of stem cells such as drug screening using hepatocytes and disease treatment by transplantation of retinal pigment epithelium and cardiomyocytes which are derived from human pluripotent stem cells.
Stem Cell Laboratory Techniques: A Guide for Researchers and Students introduces the reader to stem cell culture, handling techniques and versatile applications used by researchers. Sections introduce stem cells, including definitions, types and basic use of stem cells in biomedical science research. The book explains laboratory procedures and techniques ranging from the extraction of stem cells from animals, cell seeding and culture, harvest and maintenance of stem cells, stem cell characterization, accurate recording, quality control, and more. In addition, it guides researchers on topics such as transcriptome analysis, proliferation study analysis, and microphysiological study. Final sections cover useful and recent applications in stem cells, such as gene editing techniques and the preparation of stem cells for in vitro study, as well as stem cell lab design and equipment used in the lab. Lastly, human and animal research ethics are discussed.
Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), which cover both human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), show promise for drug discovery and regenerative medicine applications. These stem cells cannot be cultured on conventional tissue culture dishes but on biomaterials that have specific interactions with the hPSCs. Differentiation is regulated by the biological and physical cues conferred by the biomaterial. This book provides a systematic treatment of these topics bridging the gap between fundamental biomaterials research of stem cells and their use in clinical trials. The author looks at hPSC culture on a range of biomaterial substrates. Differentiation and control of hESCs and iPSCs into cardiomyocytes, osteoblasts, neural lineages and hepatocytes are covered. The author then considers their translation into stem cell therapies and looks at clinical trials across spinal cord injury, macular degeneration, bone disease and myocardial infarction. Finally, a chapter on future directions closes the book. By using this book, the reader will gain a robust overview of current research and a clearer understanding of the status of clinical trials for stem cell therapies.
Hayden Christensen and Adrien Brody star in this action-packed crime drama. Ten years after shooting a cop on a job with his teenage brother James (Christensen), Frankie (Brody) is released from prison. Not knowing what to do with his life, Frankie quickly turns back to his criminal past and reunites with old running mate Sugar (Akon) to plan a life-changing heist. As he tries to recruit his brother to join them for the bank robbery, Frankie finds James has turned his life around, opened his own garage and begun a steady relationship with Emily (Jordana Brewster). But will his brother's proposal be enough to renounce his new, clean ways?
Peer-to-peer networking is a disruptive technology for large scale distributed app- cations that has recently gained wide interest due to the successes of peer-to-peer (P2P) content sharing, media streaming, and telephony applications. There are a large range of other applications under development or being proposed. The - derlying architectures share features such as decentralizaton, sharing of end system resources, autonomy, virtualization, and self-organization. These features constitute the P2P paradigm. This handbook broadly addresses a large cross-section of c- rent research and state-of-the-art reports on the nature of this paradigm from a large number of experts in the ?eld. Several trends in information and network technology such as increased perf- mance and deployment of broadband networking, wireless networking, and mobile devices are synergistic with and reinforcing the capabilities of the P2P paradigm. There is general expectation in the technical community that P2P networking will continue to be an important tool for networked applications and impact the evo- tion of the Internet. A large amount of research activity has resulted in a relatively short time, and a growing community of researchers has developed. The Handbook of Peer-to-Peer Networking is dedicated to discussions on P2P networks and their applications. This is a comprehensive book on P2P computing.
