Phenolic compounds, one of the most widely distributed groups of
secondary metabolites in plants, have received a lot of attention
in the last few years since the consumption of vegetables and
beverages with a high level of such compounds may reduce risks of
the development of several diseases. This is partially due to their
antioxidant power since other interactions with cell functions have
been discovered. What's more, phenolic compounds are involved in
many functions in plants, such as sensorial properties, structure,
pollination, resistance to pests and predators, germination,
processes of seed, development, and reproduction. Phenolic
compounds can be classified in different ways, ranging from simple
molecules to highly polymerized compounds. Phenolic Compounds in
Food: Characterization and Analysis deals with all aspects of
phenolic compounds in food. In five sections, the 21 chapters of
this book address the classification and occurrence of phenolic
compounds in nature and foodstuffs; discuss all major aspects of
analysis of phenolic compounds in foods, such as extraction,
clean-up, separation, and detection; detail specific analysis
methods of a number of classes of phenolic compounds, from simple
molecules to complex compounds; describe the antioxidant power of
phenolic compounds; and discuss specific analysis methods in
different foodstuffs.
Phytochemical Nanodelivery Systems as Potential Biopharmaceuticals
comprehensively reviews current information on nanotechnology
applied to phytochemical nanoencapsulation to enhance their
bioavailability and bioactivity. The book is divided into two
sections, the first section critically reviews current information
on the field of nanotechnology and phytochemicals, and the second
section highlights the pre-clinical and clinical studies of
phytochemicals to comprehensively review the efficacy of these
molecules as drugs of human use. Phytochemical Nanodelivery Systems
as Potential Biopharmaceuticals provides a useful overview of this
rapidly evolving field for materials scientists and pharmaceutical
scientists, as well as for those with an interest in
biopharmaceuticals from plant sources, such as organic chemists and
food scientists.

The Middle Ages are all around us in Britain. The Tower of London
and the castles of Scotland and Wales are mainstays of cultural
tourism and an inspiring cross-section of later medieval finds can
now be seen on display in museums across England, Scotland, and
Wales. Medieval institutions from Parliament and monarchy to
universities are familiar to us and we come into contact with the
later Middle Ages every day when we drive through a village or
town, look up at the castle on the hill, visit a local church or
wonder about the earthworks in the fields we see from the window of
a train. The Oxford Handbook of Later Medieval Archaeology in
Britain provides an overview of the archaeology of the later Middle
Ages in Britain between AD 1066 and 1550. 61 entries, divided into
10 thematic sections, cover topics ranging from later medieval
objects, human remains, archaeological science, standing buildings,
and sites such as castles and monasteries, to the well-preserved
relict landscapes which still survive. This is a rich and exciting
period of the past and most of what we have learnt about the
material culture of our medieval past has been discovered in the
past two generations. This volume provides comprehensive coverage
of the latest research and describes the major projects and
concepts that are changing our understanding of our medieval
heritage.

A detailed analysis of the archaeological and historical evidence
for the trade and consumption of Mediterranean pottery in the
households of southern England between 1200 and 1700. Following a
discussion of methodologies, Gutierrez considers Mediterranean
centres of production for imported pottery, notably in Spain,
Portugal and Italy, followed by a discussion of the archaeological
evidence for contact between Wessex and the Mediterranean. A wide
range of sites are examined, including fortified and religious
buildings, urban and rural settlements and palaces. The study
finally examines the types of Mediterranean assemblages found and
their social and religious context.
A collection of 32 papers looking at the trade and economic
connections between Britain and Spain from 1200 to 1600, as
documented by ceramic finds. The pottery itself is of interest not
only for its beautiful designs but also as a marker of the cultural
change and development which was occuring in Medieval Spain, with
much evidence of muslim influence and craftsmanship. Well
illustrated: papers in English include a summary in Spanish and
vice versa.
