The Civil War in the United States was a complex activity for four years. It was fought over states' rights, that also involved slavery. More than a half million people were killed as the entire society was dismantled and destroyed. Therefore, this work has been created to maintain and facilitate order by making resources available to better understand the big fight between the North and South, and the involvement of African-Americans.

This book exhibits the major role that the Library of Congress has taken in making an effort to maintain and create additional order in the preservation and the dissemination of information in a variety of formats of African-American life, culture, and ideas for a better world. It also brings to light several libraries in the United States that are known for superior treatment of materials regarding the African-American experience. In addition, it seeks to determine perceptions of the academic community and library clientele, using some of the great intellectual centers for their studies. However, the collection of Founder's Library at Howard University, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and the Atlanta University Center Woodruff Library are able to adequately service their communities. Of course, the Library of Congress is in a class alone where there are floating research initiatives to provide authentic materials in a variety of formats to its global research community.

Danville was founded in 1793 and incorporated in 1833. It is known for the tobacco and textile industries that brought great economic success. The city dominated the tobacco belt of the Virginia and neighboring North Carolina as its prosperity was maintained until the decline of both tobacco and textile industries in the 1980s. This book demonstartesthe relationship between Danville's past and the connection that it has with the present. In addition, this work will make available the history and current activities that have attracted and continue to attract tourists, scholars, and new residents to a thriving city that has much to offer.
