Phallic worship has been practiced by many varied and widespread
cultures throughout the world for thousands of years. The male
phallic was recognized as the bringer of life and the progenitor of
the human race. As with many ancient cultures, a more complete
understanding of the phenomena of sexual intercourse was to remain
a mystery and, even by today's standards, some of those mysteries
remain.
It is evident that the belief of the reciprocal principles of
nature, male and female, light and dark, active and passive; was
known in most of the primitive religious systems of both the old
and new worlds. Thus, what resulted was the widespread, common
veneration paid to the sexual parts, as they were associated to the
productive and generative principles in nature.
The origin of phallic worship is hidden behind so much obscurity
that very little is actually known about it. The Phoenicians,
Egyptians, Phrygians, Greeks, Hindus, and many others have legends
and myths concerning phallic worship that date back to prehistory.
This book explores the origins of phallic worship, its influence on
the religions of antiquity, serpent symbolism, the tree of
knowledge, the "fall of man," and sun-god worship in antiquity.
The intricate correlations that Ancient Symbol Worship makes
concerning the origin of phallic worship throughout the ancient
world includes important knowledge which would otherwise not be
known today.

Thirty-eight articles by Alexander Wilder (1823-1908),
Introduction, Addendum and Index. Wilder was a Platonist scholar,
Physician, historian, translator, editor and prolific writer. He
had hundreds of articles in publications of his time on Platonic,
medical, philosophic and hermetic subjects, was editor of H.P.
Blavatsky's "Isis Unveiled" and author of much of the Introductory
chapter. Blavatsky held that only Wilder and Thomas Taylor had a
deep intuition on Platonic subjects.
Early medical practice was intimately allied to philosophy and
religion, and only in modern times has it become basically a
mechanical and chemical practice based on physical processes.
Wilder is most widely known today for his Platonic and philosophic
writings as well as having been a prominent figure in medicine of
his time, so he is ideally suited as a historian of the early
paradigms of medicine. Areas covered are early medical practice in
Egypt, Assyria, Persia, India and early Hinduism, China, Greece,
the lack of serious schools in Rome, Europe in the Dark Ages, the
preservation and revival of philosophy and medicine in the Moslem
world, and the bright light of Paracelsus and others in the
eventual Renaissance of learning in Europe. The Early History of
Medicine is the excerpted first third of Wilder's 900 page The
History of Medicine, which Wilder was requested to write in 1890 by
the National Eclectic Medical Association, and took 10 years
researching.
This is the fourth volume of a series of Collected Writings of
Alexander Wilder, 410 pages, Preface and Index. The 56 Wilder
articles here include 8 from Johnson's "The Platonist" and
"Blibliotheca Platonica," with Wilder's series "Platonic
Technology" which is a glossary of 265 terms important in Greek
Philosophy. Other articles include "Bacchus the Prophet-God," "Paul
the Founder of Christianity," "Hebrew and Christian Occultism,"
"The Religions of Ancient Greece and Rome," and "A Study of Plato's
Phaedo." Wilder was one of the best students of Platonism and
Ancient History of his time, and there is much information on the
Eleusinian, Cabeirien, Bacchic/Dionysian, Egyptian and Mithraic
Mysteries. He was editor of H.P. Blavatsky's "Isis Unveiled" and
she held that only Wilder and Thomas Taylor had a deep intuition on
Platonic subjects.
Wilder is best known for his philosophic writings and as Editor of
H. P. Blavatsky's "Isis Unveiled," but he was also one of the best
known Physicians of his time, having been an instructor in Medicine
and Psychology at three colleges, Editor of at least 3 Medical
Journals, and author of the 900 pp. "History of Medicine." He'd be
regarded as an Holistic practitioner today, believing that medicine
must regard the whole of human nature and not just the body. This
volume contains 35 articles of Wilder's related to the holistic
practice of medicine and psychology and the balance of articles
including a long pamphlet on Neoplatonism and Alchemy, historical
biographies, an Addendum of biographical material, and Index.
