This first complete English language edition of "Euclides
vindicatus" presents a corrected and revised edition of the
classical English translation of Saccheri's text by G.B. Halsted.
It is complemented with a historical introduction on the
geometrical environment of the time and a detailed commentary that
helps to understand the aims and subtleties of the work.""
"Euclides vindicatus, " written by the Jesuit mathematician
Gerolamo Saccheri, was published in Milan in 1733. In it, Saccheri
attempted to reform elementary geometry in two important
directions: a demonstration of the famous Parallel Postulate and
the theory of proportions. Both topics were of pivotal importance
in the mathematics of the time. In particular, the Parallel
Postulate had escaped demonstration since the first attempts at it
in the Classical Age, and several books on the topic were published
in the Early Modern Age. At the same time, the theory of proportion
was the most important mathematical tool of the Galilean School in
its pursuit of the mathematization of nature. Saccheri's attempt to
prove the Parallel Postulate is today considered the most important
breakthrough in geometry in the 18th century, as he was able to
develop for hundreds of pages and dozens of theorems a system in
geometry that denied the truth of the postulate (in the attempt to
find a contradiction). This can be regarded as the first system of
non-Euclidean geometry. Its later developments by Lambert, Bolyai,
Lobachevsky and Gauss eventually opened the way to contemporary
geometry.Occupying a unique position in the literature of
mathematical history, "Euclid Vindicated from Every Blemish" will
be of high interest to historians of mathematics as well as
historians of philosophy interested in the development of
non-Euclidean geometries.
Maybe the Global Village metaphor has never been more accurate than
it is today, where societies join forces in the fight against the
COVID 19 pandemic, in a global coordinated effort, possibly never
tested before in the known history of Humankind. Although we are
sure that in the past some other shared demands have united the
different peoples of the world, this has never been so strongly
necessary, mainly in what the global scientific community is
concerned. This is a fight for the survival of a society. However,
we should not lose sight of what we are fighting for. We fight
together for people. Not just for the abstract value of Human life,
but for life in society as a whole, including its moral and ethical
aspects. The topics of this book are based on this claim, on what
makes it possible. We do not build our lives in a vacuum, or in
distant Invisible Cities, but through a higher value, which
represents physical life in society: the City, built by the
discipline of Urbanism. This book is a spin-off of the
International Research Seminar on Urbanism_SIIU2020. Inspired by
the contents of twelve research seminars, a group of researchers
from the universities of Barcelona, Lisbon and Sao Paulo discuss
the contemporary agenda of research in Urbanism. Following the
conference, a selection of 35 original double-blind peer-reviewed
research papers were brought together with different perspectives
about such an agenda.
This volume contains the proceedings of the Tenth International
Meeting of the International Study Group for Tryptophan Research
(ISTR V), held at the University of Padova, Padova, Italy, from
25-29 June, 2002 under the auspices of the Ministry of Education,
University and Research (MIUR) in Roma, the University of Padova,
the Italian Chemical Society - Division of Pharmaceutical
Chemistry, the Veneto Region and the City of Padova. The meeting
was organized to cover the recent developments in the field of
tryptophan research. Weare very honoured that so many speakers
accepted our invitation to give plenary lectures which, with the
other communications, demonstrated the high scientific value of the
Meeting. The publications in this volume are subdivided into nine
main chapters, and cover all the major aspects in immunology,
neurobiology, psychiatry, pathology, clinics, metabolism,
enzymology, pharmacology, toxicology, melatonin, exercise and
analytical chemistry. The volume includes the contributions of 325
scientists from 24 countries, and the Musajo Memorial Lecture
delivered by Prof. Osamu Hayaishi during the Opening Ceremony.
Family secrets come to light as a young woman fights to save herself, and others, in a Nazi-run baby factory―a real-life Handmaid's Tale―during World War II.
In a sleepy German village, Allina Strauss’s life seems idyllic: she works at her uncle’s bookshop, makes strudel with her aunt, and spends weekends with her friends and fiancé. But it's 1939, Adolf Hitler is Chancellor, and Allina’s family hides a terrifying secret―her birth mother was Jewish, making her a Mischling.
One fateful night after losing everyone she loves, Allina is forced into service as a nurse at a state-run baby factory called Hochland Home. There, she becomes both witness and participant to the horrors of Heinrich Himmler’s ruthless eugenics program.
The Sunflower House is a meticulously-researched debut historical novel from Adriana Allegri that uncovers the notorious Lebensborn Program of Nazi Germany. Women of “pure” blood stayed in Lebensborn homes for the sole purpose of perpetuating the Aryan population, giving birth to thousands of babies who were adopted out to “good” Nazi families. Allina must keep her Jewish identity a secret in order to survive, but when she discovers the neglect occurring within the home, she’s determined not only to save herself, but also the children in her care.
A tale of one woman’s determination to resist and survive, The Sunflower House is also a love story. When Allina meets Karl, a high-ranking SS officer with secrets of his own, the two must decide how much they are willing to share with each other―and how much they can stand to risk as they join forces to save as many children as they can. The threads of this poignant and heartrending novel weave a tale of loss and love, friendship and betrayal, and the secrets we bury in order to save ourselves.

Wide and fascinating is the field of research on tryptophan, a most
versatile amino acid, transformed, as it is, in our organism into
many biologically active substances. This volume contains the
proceedings of the Eighth International Meeting on Tryptophan
Research, held at the University of Padova, Padova, Italy, from
June 25 to 29 1995, under the auspices of the University of Padova,
National Research Council, Italian Chemical Society-Division of
Pharmaceutical Sciences, Region ofthe Veneto and City of Padova.
The meeting was held in Padova to commemorate Prof. Luigi Musajo
twenty years after his death and the editors dedicate this book to
him in recognition of his pioneering work in tryptophan metabolism.
Prof. Osamu Hayaishi delivered the Musajo Memorial Award Lecture:
Tryptophan oxygenase. and sleep. Figure I shows the ISTRY President
Prof. Simon N. Young presenting the Musajo Memorial Medal to Prof.
Hayaishi during the Opening Ceremony. Two hundred scientists from
twenty two countries participated in the meeting. These proceedings
contain 121 papers encompassing a variety of topics and
disciplines.
