Differentiation was at first not perceived as a threat to the
European project, but rather as a tool to promote further
integration. Today, more EU policies than ever are marked by
concentric circles of integration and a lack of uniform
application. As the EU faces increasingly existential challenges,
this timely book considers whether the proliferation of mechanisms
of flexibility has contributed to this newly fragile state or
whether, to the contrary, differentiation has been fundamental to
integration despite the heterogeneity of national interests and
priorities. Written by emerging and established experts in the
field, the chapters examine the present and future of
differentiation in EU law. Part I covers general institutional
aspects, with contributors examining the nature and characteristics
of the various institutional and extra-institutional forms of
differentiation. Part II takes a policy-oriented perspective,
focussing on areas of EU law and policy in which differentiated
integration is prevalent or particularly intriguing. This includes
Economic and Monetary Union, the internal market, justice and home
affairs, and foreign policy. Differentiated integration is now a
defining feature of the EU polity, with the potential to impact
almost every facet of EU regulation. This book will be essential
reading for students and academics in EU law or anyone interested
in the future of EU integration. Contributors include: V. Borger,

of renowned authors whose dedication to the investigation of
psychiatric disease through nuclear medicine technology has
achieved international recognition. Psychiatric disorders are
discussed both from categorical and functional psychopathological
viewpoint and the latest results in functional neuroimaging are
detailed. Most chapters are written jointly by a psychiatrist and a
nuclear medicine expert, and each contains a section "Clinical
Aspects," to link research data with clinical routine. This
state-of-the-art compendium will be valuable to anybody in the
field of neuroscience, from the psychiatrist and the
radiologist/nuclear medicine specialist to the interested general
practitioner and cognitive psychologist.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the European Economic
Community and the 15th anniversary of the European Union, this book
brings to the fore 50 years of European integration. It reflects on
the foundations of these entities, their present state and their
future. It focuses on three important themes that have gained
particular importance throughout the years: (1) the constitutional
architecture of the Treaties and the role of the institutions and
other bodies within the institutional setting; (2) the need for
further integration and the possible limits or needs for a more
differentiated approach to integration, and (3) the EU's borders
and identity, including the issues of enlargement, European
neighbourhood policy and EU citizenship. In conclusion, the book
raises the question whether the European integration process can
serve as a model for other regional integration processes. Hence,
it compares the South American, African and Asian integration
processes and tries to detect commonalities and differences in
relation to the European Union integration process. The unique
character of this book will be particularly appealing to
practitioners working in or with the EU institutions and law, both
inside the EU as outside, in America, Africa and Asia. It is a
valuable source of information for master and graduate students in
European law and European studies, and those interested in other
regional integration processes. The Editors of the book are both
affiliated to Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands,
and working in the department of European and International Law.

as a Professor of European Union Law.
When the initiative of Andrea Ott to write a Handbook on the legal
aspects of the next enlargement of the European Union was f ir s t
brought to my attention, I must confe ss my initial reluctance and
even scepticism at its feasibility. Of course, I did s e e the
great merits of the concept of such a venture. A handbook implies
precision, simplicity and a great deal of mental discipline in
order to cover the full breadth of the topic and thus facilitate
the readers' understanding, especially by providing the necessary
source material for further research. The European Union had
already declared its read iness to embark upon a massive
enlargement eastwards and this will be the largest ever. It is the
EU's official position that enlargement, after all, is vital to
achieving the ideals of prosperity, peace and security in Europe as
a whole . If all goes according to plan, in 2004 the EU anticipates
extending its borders to take in eight Central and East Eu- pean
countries as well as Cyprus and Malta. Moreover, the Union's
enlargement policy reaches even further afield to include the
Balkan countries . Seen in this context, the enlargement process is
a complex and ever changing one and any attempt to demystify it,
such as that involved in putting together a handbook on the
subject, is most welcome. But the pitfalls of enlargement cannot be
ignored .
PET and SPECT in Psychiatry showcases the combined expertise of
renowned authors whose dedication to the investigation of
psychiatric disease through nuclear medicine technology has
achieved international recognition. The classical psychiatric
disorders as well as other subjects - such as suicide, sleep,
eating disorders, and autism - are discussed and the latest results
in functional neuroimaging are detailed. Most chapters are written
jointly by a clinical psychiatrist and a nuclear medicine expert to
ensure a multidisciplinary approach. This state of the art
compendium will be valuable to all who have an interest in the
field of neuroscience, from the psychiatrist and the
radiologist/nuclear medicine specialist to the interested general
practitioner and cognitive psychologist. It is the first volume of
a trilogy on PET and SPECT imaging in the neurosciences; other
volumes will focus on PET and SPECT in neurology and PET and SPECT
of neurobiological systems.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the use of PET and
SPECT in the classic psychiatric disorders such as depression,
bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia. In
addition, it discusses the application of these functional
neuroimaging techniques in a variety of other conditions, including
sleep disorders, eating disorders, autism, and chronic fatigue
syndrome. The new edition has been extensively revised and updated
to reflect the latest advances and results in nuclear imaging
within the field. Most chapters are written jointly by a clinical
psychiatrist and a nuclear medicine expert to ensure a
multidisciplinary approach. This state of the art compendium will
be of value for all who have an interest in the field of
neuroscience, from psychiatrists and radiologists/nuclear medicine
specialists to interested general practitioners and cognitive
psychologists. Companion volumes on the use of PET and SPECT in
neurology and for the imaging of neurobiological systems complete a
trilogy.
In the past two decades much has been published on whiplash injury,
yet both the confusion regarding the condition and the medicolegal
discussion surrounding it have increased. In this scenario, a guide
to recent and current international research in the field is more
necessary than ever. Especially functional imaging methods - such
as single-photon emission tomography, positron emission tomography,
functional MRI, and hybrid techniques - have demonstrated a variety
of significant brain alterations. This book accordingly offers a
critical approach to the challenging interpretation of the new
research data obtained using functional neuroimaging in whiplash
injury. It covers all aspects, including the imaging tools
themselves and the different methods of image analysis. Whiplash
Injury: New Methods of Functional Neuroimaging will hopefully help
patients, their relatives and friends, physicians, and others to
understand this condition as a disease.
The life and death, but also the creative work of famous musicians
is closely linked to their personal medical histories. In "Famous
Composers - Diseases Reloaded" these case histories are vividly
reconstructed on the basis of authentic biographical testimonies
and closely linked to the personalities of the musicians. The
latest research findings on the pathophysiology of these composers
will be woven into the overall picture. Was Paganini's
"devilishness" caused by a hereditary disease? Did Scarlatti have
strange signs of illness on his fingers? What did Bach really die
of? How did "Christel" from a dubious milieu change Schumann's
entire life? What aggravated Ravel's underlying illness so that he
did not complete a single composition in the last five years before
his death? How did Tarrega manage to play the guitar again after
his stroke with hemiplegia? Did the Brazilian Villa-Lobos'
worldwide reputation help him live longer thanks to the best
treatment available to him? Andreas Otte, physician and musician,
has incorporated the latest medical history research into the
composers' pathographies. This book is an exciting and
"well-tempered" reading experience not only for physicians, music
lovers, musicologists and musicians, but for all readers who want
to develop a basic understanding of the pathophysiology and life
scores of these great masters under current conditions from today's
perspective.
