Enriquillo y Azuei son los lagos mas grandes del Caribe Insular. Son lagos mellizos que no se parecen mucho. Enriquillo, en el lado dominicano de la Isla Quisqueya, a 40 m por debajo del nivel del mar, es hipersalado, cambia constantemente su nivel, superficie y volumen. En ocasiones casi se seca, en otros tiempos inunda cultivos, pastos y carreteras. El Lago Azuei esta ubicado en el lado haitiano, situado a 12 m por encima del nivel del mar, sus aguas son salobres. Hacia el norte y el sur de los lagos se levantan montanas de mas de 2000 m. Por su belleza espectacular y su flora y fauna extraordinaria se ha creado un gran numero de areas protegidas en el lado dominicano, formando parte de la reserva de biosfera "Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo. En el lado haitiano esta el deseo de crear otra reserva de biosfera. Actualmente ambos lagos han subido varios metros. Este libro busca contribuir a explicar la razon de las subidas: un tema que preocupa la gente en ambos lados de la frontera."
