Labour and Transnational Action in Times of Crisis (Hardcover): Andreas Bieler, Roland Erne, Darragh Golden, Idar Helle, Knut... Labour and Transnational Action in Times of Crisis (Hardcover)
Andreas Bieler, Roland Erne, Darragh Golden, Idar Helle, Knut Kjeldstadli, …
R3,530 Discovery Miles 35 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Processes of neoliberal globalization have put national trade unions under pressure as the transnational organization of production puts these labour movements in competition with each other. The global economic crisis has intensified these pressures further. And yet, economic and political integration processes have also provided workers with new possibilities to organize resistance. Emphasizing the importance of agency, this book analyzes transnational labour action in times of crisis, historically and now. It draws on a variety of fascinating cases, across formal and informal collectives, in order to clarify which factors facilitate or block the formation of solidarity. Moving beyond empirical description of cases to an informed understanding of collective action across borders, the volume provides an insightful theorization of transnational action.

Against the background of the global economic crisis since 2007/2008 and increasing inequality across the world, the Global South has experienced widespread, large-scale industrial action, including in countries such as China, Brazil, India and South Africa, which had been hailed as the new growth engines of the global political economy as part of the so-called BRICS. This volume systematically evaluates how the new forms of labour mobilization witnessed in the past ten years responded to the predominance of the informality-precarity complex of industrial relations and what conclusions can be drawn for potentially successful strategies against exploitation in the future. Can we identify a convergence of new approaches across the Global South, or do we witness an ongoing fragmentation of actors, models and strategies? In addressing this question, consideration is given to issues of class as well as gender and race. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Globalizations.

The contributors to this volume draw on a non-dogmatic Marxist approach to explain the systemic and conjunctural dynamics of crisis inherent in global capitalism. Their analysis asks what is historically specific to capitalism's crises while avoiding catastrophic or defeatist claims. At the same time the volume situates left agency within actual patterns of resistance and class struggle to clarify the potential for transformative change. The cycle of resistance strengthened by the World Socal Forum and transnational activism is now punctuated by the experience of the Arab Spring, the agency of anti-systemic movements, left think tanks, the Occupy Wall Street Movement, labour unions, left parties in Europe such as Syrizia and Podemos and peoples' budgeting in Kerala, India. On the down side, we are witnessing the waning of the Workers Party in Brazil and serious challenges for South Africa's once powerful labour movement and still formative social justice activism. All these developments are assessed in this volume. This is the second volume in the Democratic Marxism series. It elaborates on crucial themes introduced in the first volume, Marxism in the 21st Century: Crisis, Critique and Struggle (edited by Michelle Williams and Vishwas Satgar).

Chinese Labour in the Global Economy - Capitalist Exploitation and Strategies of Resistance (Paperback): Andreas Bieler,... Chinese Labour in the Global Economy - Capitalist Exploitation and Strategies of Resistance (Paperback)
Andreas Bieler, Chun-yi Lee
R1,319 Discovery Miles 13 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Chinese development is widely considered to be an example of successful developmental catch-up with double-digit growth rates year on year. Some even talk of an emerging power, which may in time replace the US as the global economy's hegemon. And yet there is a dark underside to this 'miracle' in the form of workers' long hours, low pay and lack of welfare benefits. Increasing levels of inequality have gone hand in hand with super exploitative working conditions. Nevertheless, Chinese workers have not simply accepted these conditions of super-exploitation; they have started to fight back. Set against the background of China's integration into the global economy along uneven and combined development lines, this volume explores new forms of resistance by Chinese workers, be it through the state trade union All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) or through informal labour NGOs. It also analyses the links between Chinese formal and informal labour organisations, with labour organisations outside China. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Globalizations.

The Struggle for a Social Europe - Trade Unions and EMU in Times of Global Restructuring (Hardcover, New): Andreas Bieler The Struggle for a Social Europe - Trade Unions and EMU in Times of Global Restructuring (Hardcover, New)
Andreas Bieler
R2,024 Discovery Miles 20 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a detailed investigation and comparison of the trade unions of five EU member states: Austria, Britain, France, Germany and Sweden, and their positions on Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Several European-level trade union organisations are also examined. The focus of this project, however, is not limited to EMU as a case study. Rather, EMU is regarded as a vehicle to assess trade unions' options and possibilities to respond to global structural change in general and to participate in the formation of the future economic-political system of the EU in particular. Two principal hypotheses are investigated. Firstly, that a labour movement's position on EMU depends crucially on its length and degree of exposure to the competitive pressures of globalisation, and secondly, that those trade unions which lose influence within the domestic institutional set-up are most in favour of the establishment of an industrial relations system and social regulation at the European level to counter global pressures. By contrast, unions which continue to enjoy a strong position at the national level, are less likely to engage in European co-operation. -- .

Non-State Actors and Authority in the Global System (Paperback): Andreas Bieler, Richard Higgott, Geoffrey Underhill Non-State Actors and Authority in the Global System (Paperback)
Andreas Bieler, Richard Higgott, Geoffrey Underhill
R1,338 Discovery Miles 13 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Traditionally in International Relations, power and authority were considered to rest with states. But recently, in the light of changes associated with globalisation, this has come under scrutiny both empirically and theoretically. This book analyses the continuing but changing role of states in the international arena, and their relationships with a wide range of non-state actors, which possess increasingly salient capabilities to structure global politics and economics.

Andreas Bieler, Ingemar Lindberg, Devan Pillay
R824 R755 Discovery Miles 7 550 Save R69 (8%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book critically examines the responses of the working classes of the world to the challenges posed by the neoliberal restructuring of the global economy. Neoliberal globalisation, the book argues, has created new forms of polarisation in the world. A renewal of working class internationalism must address the situation of both the more privileged segments of the working class and the more impoverished ones. The study identifies new or renewed labour responses among formalised core workers as well as those on the periphery, including street-traders, homeworkers and other 'informal sector' workers. The book contains ten country studies, including India, China, South Korea, Japan, Germany, Sweden, Canada, South Africa, Argentina and Brazil. It argues that workers and trade unions, through intensive collaboration with other social forces across the world, can challenge the logic of neoliberal globalization.

Images of Gramsci - Connections and Contentions in Political Theory and International Relations (Paperback): Andreas Bieler,... Images of Gramsci - Connections and Contentions in Political Theory and International Relations (Paperback)
Andreas Bieler, Adam Morton
R1,323 Discovery Miles 13 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A comprehensive reassessment of the relevance of Gramsci's theory and practice at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Whilst commentaries on Antonio Gramsci and arguments surrounding his political and intellectual legacy have proliferated, little attention has been hitherto directed to linking the connections and contentions between Political Theory and International Political Economy. This volume brings together leading authorities engaged in common debates to produce, for the first time, a major collection that clarifies, addresses, and lays bare the manifest connections and contentions within political and international theory surrounding the legacy of Antonio Gramsci. In Part I, scholars examine various approaches to Gramsci's thought, including his methodological principles, the specific conception of civil society he offers, his writings on war and cultural struggle, the spatial dimension of his thinking, and his philosophy of history. Part II focuses on very new developments in Gramsci scholarship concerning the questioning of contemporary world order. This includes reflections on his relevancy to issues of globalising capitalism, transformations in the state, revolutionary praxis, orientalism and empire, as well as European regionalism. This book was previously published as a special issue of the leading Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy. (CRISPP)

Free Trade and Transnational Labour (Paperback): Andreas Bieler, Bruno Ciccaglione, John Hilary, Ingemar Lindberg Free Trade and Transnational Labour (Paperback)
Andreas Bieler, Bruno Ciccaglione, John Hilary, Ingemar Lindberg
R1,263 Discovery Miles 12 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'Free trade' strategies have increasingly become a problem for the international labour movement. While trade unions in the North especially in manufacturing have supported free trade agreements to secure export markets for their companies, trade unions in the Global South oppose these agreements, since they often imply deindustrialisation. Especially the expansion of the free trade agenda into services, public procurement, investment, intellectual property rights as well as investor to state dispute settlement provisions are considered to be problematic. The purpose of this volume is to understand better these dynamics underlying 'free trade' policy-making in order to explore possibilities for transnational labour solidarity. Bringing together labour academics with trade union researchers and social movement activists, this volume moves from conceptual reflections about the impact of 'free trade' via the analysis of struggles around free trade agreements to considerations of concrete alternatives. This book was published as a special issue of Globalizations.

Global Capitalism, Global War, Global Crisis (Paperback): Andreas Bieler, Adam David Morton Global Capitalism, Global War, Global Crisis (Paperback)
Andreas Bieler, Adam David Morton
R921 R833 Discovery Miles 8 330 Save R88 (10%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book assesses the forces of social struggle shaping the past and present of the global political economy from the perspective of historical materialism. Based on the philosophy of internal relations, the character of capital is understood in such a way that the ties between the relations of production, state-civil society, and conditions of class struggle can be realised. By conceiving the internal relationship of global capitalism, global war, global crisis as a struggle-driven process, the book provides a novel intervention on debates within theories of 'the international'. Through a set of conceptual reflections, on agency, structure and the role of discourses embedded in the economy, class struggle is established as our point of departure. This involves analysing historical and contemporary themes on the expansion of capitalism through uneven and combined development, the role of the state and geopolitics, and conditions of exploitation and resistance. These conceptual reflections and thematic considerations are then extended in a series of empirical interventions, including a focus on the 'rising powers' of the BRICS, conditions of the 'new imperialism', and the ongoing financial crisis. The book delivers a radically open-ended dialectical consideration of ruptures of resistance within the global political economy.

Fighting for Water - Resisting Privatization in Europe (Hardcover): Andreas Bieler Fighting for Water - Resisting Privatization in Europe (Hardcover)
Andreas Bieler
R2,813 Discovery Miles 28 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the wake of the global financial crisis, water services have come under renewed neoliberal assault across Europe. At the same time, the struggle against water privatization has continued to pick up pace; from the re-municipalization of water in Grenoble in 2000, to the United Nations declaration of water as a human right in 2010. In Fighting for Water, Andreas Bieler draws on years of extensive fieldwork to dissect the underlying dynamics of the struggle for public water in Europe. By analysing the successful referendum against water privatization in Italy, the European Citizens' Initiative on 'Water and Sanitation are a Human Right', the struggles against water privatization in Greece and water charges in Ireland, Bieler shows why water has been a fruitful arena for resistance against neoliberal restructuring.

Social Forces in the Making of the New Europe - The Restructuring of European Social Relations in the Global Political Economy... Social Forces in the Making of the New Europe - The Restructuring of European Social Relations in the Global Political Economy (Paperback)
Andreas Bieler; Edited by A. Morton
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The main argument of this book is that the revival of European integration in the mid-1980s and the emergence of a 'New Europe' have to be analysed against the background of globalisation and the transnational restructuring of social forces since the early 1970s. The book brings together a range of diverse - but similar - critical perspectives that draw from the work of Antonio Gramsci to provide an alternative to established neo-functionalist and intergovernmentalist approaches. It is argued that these critical perspectives can more adequately analyse various aspects of European integration within the recent context of globalisation.

Verletzliches Leben - Horizonte Einer Theologie Der Seelsorge (German, Paperback, Aufl. ed.): Andrea Bieler Verletzliches Leben - Horizonte Einer Theologie Der Seelsorge (German, Paperback, Aufl. ed.)
Andrea Bieler
R1,207 Discovery Miles 12 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the main challenges facing the world labor force and possible responses from trade unions.

The working classes across the world are feeling the effects of globalization and the race to the bottom that it encourages. Core jobs for workers in the developed world are being outsourced to countries where pay and conditions are terrible and union membership is often forbidden. Much of the work of the world economy is now taking place in a burgeoning informal sector, making worldwide organization of labor very difficult.

Case studies from 11 different countries, including China, Germany, Canada and South Africa, illustrate what is happening and show how workers and trade unions can successfully adapt to the neoliberal world.
