Housing transitions through the life course - Aspirations, needs and policy (Hardcover): Andrew Beer, Debbie Faulkner, With *,... Housing transitions through the life course - Aspirations, needs and policy (Hardcover)
Andrew Beer, Debbie Faulkner, With *, Chris Paris, Terry Clower
R2,948 Discovery Miles 29 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The types of housing that people live in help to shape an individual's access to jobs, health, well-being, and communities. There are also substantial differences between generations regarding the type of housing they aspire to live in, their attitudes to housing costs, the nature of their households, and their attitudes to different tenures. This book is an innovative contribution to the study of housing, drawing upon research from the US, the UK, and Australia to show how lifetime attitudes to housing have changed, with new population dynamics driving the market. It also considers how the global financial crisis has differentially affected housing markets across the globe, with variable impacts on the long term housing transitions of different populations.

The Impacts of Automotive Plant Closure - A Tale of Two Cities (Hardcover, New): Andrew Beer, Holli Evans The Impacts of Automotive Plant Closure - A Tale of Two Cities (Hardcover, New)
Andrew Beer, Holli Evans
R4,486 Discovery Miles 44 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Economic restructuring has been a notable feature of so-called mature industrial economies such as the UK and Australia in the last two decades, with deregulation, privatisation, technological change and globalisation combining to reshape such economies. Some industries have grown, while others have declined. Moreover, while overall employment in the UK and Australia has grown, many newly-created positions require skills not found in the industries shedding labour, or are in casualised and low paid occupations. Many lesser-skilled workers leaving declining industries are therefore at risk of long-term unemployment or leaving the workforce entirely. Both mental and physical health can be affected after redundancy. It is therefore crucial that the measures put in place in many domains of social policy (such as formal health policy, employment assistance, community development, housing assistance and so on) to adequately address the difficulties confronting this group. This volume takes a closer look at the impact of manufacturing - notably automotive - plant closures in the UK (Birmingham) and Australia (Adelaide) in recent years and policy responses to those closures. It attempts to tease out differences in policy response and effectiveness, and attempts to identify areas where policy could be made to work better in terms of adjusting to large scale manufacturing change and resulting job losses. In so doing, it begins, for the first time we believe, to take a comparative approach to understanding the impact of plant closures and policy responses.

This book was published as a special issue of Policy Studies.

Andrew Beer, Terry L. Clower
R4,784 Discovery Miles 47 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This textbook looks at economic development at the local, community or regional scale. It provides students with a comprehensive introduction to contemporary thinking about locally-based economic development, how growth can be planned and how that development can be realized. Globalization, Planning and Local Economic Development:* Provides students with a thorough understanding of current debates around local and regional development and how that body of work can assist them in helping communities grow; * Equips students with a 'toolkit' of strategies that enable them to both plan for development and deliver that development through their professional lives; * Offers a roadmap for economic development that helps students make sense of place-based development by providing a 'meta narrative' of how regions grow and how those processes can be enhanced. This integrating perspective will be organized around the concept of competitiveness and how that concept can be understood and operationalized in various ways; * Introduces students to a range of techniques essential to success in economic development planning. In addition to a wealth of case studies and pedagogical features in the book, this text is also complemented by online resources. In offering a full toolkit of economic development knowledge, techniques and strategies, this text will thoroughly prepare students for a career in urban planning, transport planning, human geography, applied economic analysis, geographic information systems, or work as an economic development practitioner.

Across the globe policy makers implement, and academics teach and undertake research upon, place-based policy. But what is place-based policy, what does it aspire to achieve, what are the benefits of place-based approaches relative to other forms of policy, and what are the key determinants of success for this type of government intervention? This Policy Expo examines these questions, reviewing the literature and the experience of places and their governments around the world. We find place-based policies are essential in contemporary economies, providing solutions to otherwise intractable challenges such as the long-term decline of cities and regions. For those working in public sector agencies the success or failure of place-based policies is largely attributable to governance arrangements, but for researchers the community that is the subject of this policy effort, and its leadership, determines outcomes. This Policy Expo explores the differing perspectives on place-based policy and maps out the essential components of effective and impactful actions by government at the scale of individual places.
