This title was first published in 2002. How do you add value to
your clients? Is it the process you use, or the technical skills
you deploy? Or perhaps it's your ability to adjust the way you sell
and deliver your services based upon your tacit understanding of
your client's culture - the way we do things round here. Such
chameleon-like behaviour is fundamental to successful consulting,
and yet it is neither widely understood nor practised within the
profession. Until now. This book describes a powerful way to
improve the consultancy process, from selling the service to
delivering the engagement, through a concept called cultural
intelligence - the missing dimension of effective consultancy. By
revisiting the consultancy process using a simple model of
organizational culture, this text creates a potent technique for
tailoring the principal consultancy processes of selling,
relationship management, account management and engagement
management. Such tailoring that ensures the consultant and
consultancy firm can blend into their clients' organizations more
effectively and as a result add immediate and lasting value.
This title was first published in 2001. Based on research and
practical experience, this text highlights the contributory factors
leading to project failure. The buisiness-IT culture gap,
information politics, escalating commitment, the problem of high
investment and low return, and accountability for failure are all
covered.

This revised second edition of a popular handbook for engineers describes the important relationship between high-energy radiation environments, electronic device physics and materials. It is a straightforward account of the problems which arise when high-energy radiation bombards matter and of engineering methods for solving those problems. Radiation effects are a problem encountered in the use of highly engineered materials such as semiconductors, optics and polymers. The finely-tuned properties of these materials may change drastically when exposed to a radiation environment such as a bean of X-rays or electrons, the space environment or the 'hadrons' in CERN's new collider. All of these environments and several more are described. The impact of these environments on microelectronics in computing, data processing and communication is the core of this book (highlighted in chapters on MOS and optical devices). While unashamedly oriented to the engineer-designer and manager, with descriptions in a highly readable form, there is no compromise in physical accuracy when describing high-energy radiation and the effects it produces, such as electronic failure, colour centres and the decay of strength. A great breadth of technical data, needed to make predictions on the spot, is presented, with literature references needed for further research and also a compendium of websites which have been tested and used by authors.
Organizations and those who work within them are under attack from
the increasingly pervasive impacts of commoditization. With little
to distinguish one company's products and services from another or
one person's skills and capabilities from the next, organizations
and workers alike are finding themselves trapped in the me-too hell
of commoditization. For many this means the survival of the
cheapest, as price becomes the principal basis for decision making.
For others it requires them to think creatively to avoid the trap
of commoditization, even though this may only provide a temporary
respite. In this groundbreaking book, Andrew Holmes sets out why
commoditization represents such a clear and present danger to every
corporation and all white-collar workers. Starting with the nature
of the commodities we are familiar with such as coal and cotton,
Holmes moves on to describe how commoditization is affecting entire
industries and is increasingly touching the work of the
professional classes. The evidence is both fascinating and
compelling and it is clear that the impacts of commoditization are
far reaching. The author also outlines the impact of
commoditization on an organization's strategy towards brand, supply
chain, value chain, innovation, pricing and competition. He
explores the implications for skills, attitudes and behaviours in
the workplace before describing a series of strategies for avoiding
the risk and exploiting the opportunities offered by a new
commoditized world, such as outsourcing, innovation, offshoring,
mergers and acquisitions, divestments and first mover advantage.
Holmes offers organizations and white-collar workers a range of
strategic responses which can be used to combat its worst impacts.
And as commoditization continues to make inroads into the corporate
and working worlds, this book will be an invaluable companion to
addressing the challenges which it presents.
Explores loyalism as a social and political force in eighteenth and
nineteenth century British colonies and former colonies. Loyalism
in Britain and Ireland, which was once seen as a crude reaction
against radicalism or nationalism, stimulated by the elite and
blindly followed by plebeians, has recently been shown by
historians to have been, on the contrary, a politically
multi-faceted, socially enabling phenomenon which did much to shape
identity in the British Isles. This book takes further this revised
picture by considering loyalism in the wider British World. It
considersthe overall nature of loyalism, exploring its development
in England, Ireland and Scotland, and goes on to examine its
manifestation in a range of British colonies and former colonies,
including the United States, Canada, India, Australia and New
Zealand. It shows that whilst eighteenth-century Anglo-centric
loyalism had a core of common ideological assumptions,
associational structures and ritual behaviour, loyalism manifested
itself differently in different territories. This divergence is
explored through a discussion of the role of loyal associations and
military institutions, loyalism's cultural and ritual dimensions
and its key role in the formation of political identities.
Chronologically, the book covers a pivotal period, comprehending
the American and French Revolutions, the 1798 Irish rebellion and
Irish Union, the Canadian rebellions of 1837, and Fenianism and
Home Rule campaigns throughout the British World. Allan Blackstock
is Reader in History at the University of Ulster and author of
Loyalism in Ireland, 1789-1829 (Boydell, 2007). Frank O'Gorman was
Professor of History at the Universityof Manchester. Contributors:

Pains on Trains is the perfect way to take the tedium out of
commuting, guaranteed to become as indispensable to the seasoned
traveller as the blow--up pillow and water sterilising tablets. In
Pains on Trains, Andrew Holmes and Matthew Reeves set their sights
on the scourge of the modern office worker -- other office workers
who clog up trains, buses, boats and planes with their annoying
habits and depressing clothes. Pains on Trains is dedicated to the
rush--hour veteran and consists of a a pain--spottinga guide to the
very worst people you meet on your daily commute. Each painful
character is illustrated in their usual context and supported by a

Soldier and intellectual Carl von Clausewitz first entered combat
at the tender age of thirteen. He later rose to the rank of Major
General, married into the Prussian nobility and wrote a book which
was to become one of the most influential works on military
strategy ever published. On War is one of the first books on modern
military strategy. Writing mostly after the Napoleonic wars,
between 1816 and 1830, von Clausewitz never lived to see it
published. He had a theory that it was the integration of
political, societal and economic issues that was the most important
factor in deciding the outcome of a war. This new theory made On
War one of the most important texts on strategy ever written. On
War has been translated into practically every major language and
remains a source of inspiration for modern strategic thinkers. In
this fascinating new interpretation, Andrew Holmes illustrates how
von Clausewitz's ideas can be applied to contemporary business.
Readers will discover: * Why business, like war, is neither an art
nor a science; * How to 'fortify' their business; * The importance
of a strong commander; * The secrets of being ruthless; * Why they
should bypass their smart phones and open up the lines of
communication. By re-interpreting von Clausewitz's original
theories, Holmes demonstrates that On War is not just about the
battlefield. This clear, concise and waffle-free book shows how you
can treat life like a military operation and steer your troops in
the right direction in the world of business. Andrew Holmes' Carl
von Clausewitz's On War illustrates the timeless nature of von
Clausewitz's insights by bringing them to life with modern examples
and business case studies. This brilliant interpretation of On War
is an entertaining accompaniment to one of the most famous strategy
books ever written.
This book allows readers to grasp both the fundamentals and the
latest technological advances in the field of mine drainage, which
is increasingly crucial both environmentally and economically. Its
extensive coverage of current and promising passive treatment
technologies, combined with numerous practical guides, makes it an
indispensable tool for early researchers seeking promising trends
and identifying gaps. The book systematically explores recent
literature on passive treatment research, classifying them as
preventative, in-situ, and ex-situ solutions. It covers relevant
passive treatments such as permeable reactive barriers, constructed
wetlands, gravel bed reactors, saturated rock fills, and
passivation techniques, among other common source control tactics.
Each technology is discussed in terms of principal mechanisms,
state-of-the-art technological advances, advantages and
disadvantages, and suitability for a given mine drainage chemistry
and flow regime. The book provides a comprehensive view of the
entire field, offering researchers and policymakers a reference
guide, research ideas, understanding, and practical applications
for each technology. Furthermore, the contains an overview of
recent trends in material selection for passive treatment
applications, primarily through the use of industrial waste and
by-products, which incorporate more sustainable practices in mine
drainage remediation. Uniquely, the manuscript includes a flowchart
based on water chemistry and flow rates to guide readers to ideal
treatment options, along with written analysis to further support
the readers’ decision-making. Overall, this equips early
researchers in the field with knowledge of fundamentals and
promising research routes when dealing with different mine drainage
complexities while also providing them with promising research
avenues that can advance the field further.
