Richard De Grijs, Andrew Jacob
R2,175 Discovery Miles 21 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book describes William Dawes’ life and professional achievements. William Dawes was a British Marine serving as the official astronomer on board the First Fleet making the 1787–1788 voyage from Britain to the new colony of New South Wales. Between 1788 and 1791, Dawes established not one but two observatories within a kilometre of Sydney’s present-day city centre, a full seven decades before the construction of Sydney’s historical Observatory at Dawes’ Point, today a stone’s throw from the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In this comprehensive biography, the authors discuss William Dawes’ life and his considerable impact—as astronomer, engineer, surveyor, ordnance officer and intellectual centre point—on the early colony in New South Wales (in essence, his impact on the earliest history of Sydney as a settlement) and, subsequently, on the British colonies of Sierra Leone on the West African coast and Antigua in the West Indies. Dawes’ life and professional achievements are closely linked to the earliest history of Sydney as a British settlement. He is often considered a man of high morals, and as such his interactions with the local populations in New South Wales, Sierra Leone and Antigua were mostly deemed respectful and above reproach. He is seen a truly enlightened individual, far ahead of his time. The authors of this book have a significant track record of successful and engaging communication of complex concepts in physics and astronomy with experts and non-experts alike. This biography touches on numerous aspects related to 18th century maritime navigation (“sailing on the stars”), societal relationships, the exploration of newly discovered lands, as well as the early history of Sydney and New South Wales, and the colonial histories of Sierra Leone and the West Indies. As such, this book will appeal to a wide range of readers, from scholars in the history of science and maritime navigation, to history enthusiasts ranging from local historians on Australia’s eastern seaboard to members of the public with a keen interest in British colonial history.

Georgia Frank, Susan Holman, Andrew Jacobs; Contributions by Suzanne Abrams Rebillard, Thomas Arentzen, …
R1,591 Discovery Miles 15 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This collection explores how the body became a touchstone for late antique religious practice and imagination. When we read the stories and testimonies of late ancient Christians, what different types of bodies stand before us? How do we understand the range of bodily experiences-solitary and social, private and public-that clothed ancient Christians? How can bodily experience help us explore matters of gender, religious identity, class, and ethnicity? The Garb of Being investigates these questions through stories from the Eastern Christian world of antiquity: monks and martyrs, families and congregations, and textual bodies. Contributors include S. Abrams Rebillard, T. Arentzen, S. P. Brock, R. S. Falcasantos , C. M. Furey, S. H. Griffith, R. Krawiec, B. McNary-Zak, J.-N. Mellon Saint-Laurent, C. T. Schroeder, A. P. Don't feel like a prick? - The companion book to the Alby Mangels film on diabetes (Paperback): Andrew Jacob Don't feel like a prick? - The companion book to the Alby Mangels film on diabetes (Paperback)
Andrew Jacob; Illustrated by Brett Sherwell
R401 Discovery Miles 4 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many people have asked me why I've written this book. The reason is simple. Although I have lived around diabetes since I was seven years old, even though several of my friends and neighbours were diagnosed with the condition years ahead of my own recent diagnosis, it wasn't until I was diagnosed that I truly realised the terrifying level of apathy and denial there is about diabetes, the minefield of misinformation that is out there, nor how enormous the spread of this global pandemic has become. There are countless books and theories and claims and counterclaims about diabetes, and in no way is this modest little publication designed to be the ultimate authority on the disease - far from it. No, my reason for doing this is to make you laugh, make you think, wake you up and show you both how easy and how important it is that you take responsibility and take it seriously... NOW. My father was a pharmaceutical chemist, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Health (London), chairman of an international pharmaceutical company... and a diabetic. He was diagnosed with Type Two diabetes when he was 36 years old, slim bordering on skinny, active and otherwise healthy. His career began in medical research and ultimately took him all over the world from the darkest corners of West Africa to the most fashionable quarters of Paris and the Caribbean. In the process he met some of the finest medical minds on the planet (many of whom are still my personal friends) and he witnessed some horrors that defy belief... and he did all this as a diabetic. Open, raw, honest, at times funny, at times poignant, at times unapologetically confrontational, this book is designed to inspire, assist and guide you - particularly if you are pre-diabetic, newly diagnosed with diabetes Type Two, or if you are a friend or family member of a diabetic. All facts and statistics in this book have sources from the official authorities on diabetes... my irreverent language and tone have not * Enjoy * Be inspired * Take action
