Anyone who has been through Sunday school can tell you that Jesus
walked on water, fed the 5,000 and told a parable about a sower. Is
there really much more to it than that? Aren't the Gospels supposed
to be the "easy" bits of the Bible? Using Mark as a worked example,
Andrew and Tim follow 'the most important things that have ever
happened in the history of the world'. They help us see "a
diagnosis of the human condition more perceptive than that offered
by any physician, politician, philosopher or psychiatrist". They
point to a solution that touches in the same moment both the
horrors of hell and the glory of heaven. We come face to face with
the Jesus of the Bible and see how to follow him in a way that
utterly transforms our lives. The conviction of the Dig Deeper
books is that God wants us to work hard at reading the Bible in
order to discover its true meaning, hence the use of 'tools' to dig
and dig again. It's an interactive and enjoyable process. Indeed,
the authors want to make finding Bible treasure a real possibility
for everyone. And to do so with receptive hearts, listening to what
the Holy Spirit is saying. 'What a splendid book! A great resource
for Bible study leaders and preachers.' - Peter Adam 'This book is
a gold mine, not just because of the many rich ideas it contains,
but especially because it enables us to discover the treasures of
the Gospels... The resulting engagement with the gospel - with
Jesus himself - is compelling and life-changing.' - Jonathan Lamb
When it comes to reading and understanding the Bible, a
dangerous phrase is used by non-Christians and even some believers:
"Well, that's your interpretation." It is true that without some
care in your interpretation, you can "make" the Bible say almost
anything. Dig Deeper is written out of the conviction that there is
a right way to understand the Bible and a wrong way, and the
authors show us how to read it correctly.
Dig Deeper offers sixteen "tools" readers can use to get to the
bottom of any Bible passage and discover its intended meaning.
Examples show how each tool helps readers discover something
exciting and relevant in a passage, and the "Dig deeper" exercises
offer the opportunity to practice using the tools. The book's
brevity and easy-to-read format make it ideal for Christians who
want to get the most out of their Bible.
What does an Old Testament book have to say to us in the
twenty-first century? Discover the message of a Bible book for
yourself by using tools which help you 'dig deeper'. In the
authors' own words, 'We want to share with you why we think it
means what it does, how we came to our understanding of the verses,
what discoveries we made. Rather than a Hollywood movie, this is
going to be more like the how-they-made-the-movie footage.' 'I have
never seen a burning bush, have never suffered a plague of boils
(even as a seventeen-year-old the acne wasn't that bad), have never
parted my bathwater and walked through the middle, have never been
to Mount Sinai, let alone heard God speaking from thunder on the
top of it,' says Andrew Sach. 'What possible relevance does the
book of Exodus have to me?' We set about discovering the message of
a Bible book for us today using various tools (first introduced in
Dig Deeper). The Repetition tool helps us to see that God's name is
a big deal. The Context tool shows us why it was important to beat
the Amalekites. The Quotation/Allusion tool uncovers a miniature
garden of Eden where we least expect one. And so on.
An increasing number of theologians and church leaders are
questioning the doctrine of penal substitution. The authors offer a
fresh re-articulation of the doctrine and its central role, and
engage with over twenty specific objections that have been brought
against it.
The belief that Jesus died for us, suffering the wrath of his
own Father in our place, has been the wellspring of hope for
countless Christians through the ages. However, with an increasing
number of theologians, church leaders, and even popular Christian
books and magazines questioning this doctrine, which naysayers have
described as a form of "cosmic child abuse," a fresh articulation
and affirmation of penal substitution is needed. And Jeffery, Ovey,
and Sach have responded here with clear exposition and
analysis.
They make the case not only that the doctrine is clearly taught
in Scripture, but that it has an impeccable pedigree and a central
place in Christian theology, and that its neglect has serious
consequences. The authors also systematically analyze over twenty
specific objections that have been brought against penal
substitution and charitably but firmly offer a defining declaration
of the doctrine of the cross for any concerned reader.
Clive Merrison and Andrew Sachs star in seven original BBC Radio 4
full-cast adventures for Holmes and Watson. How many times did Dr
John Watson tantalise us with passing references to a mystery which
his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, never wrote about in full? In
these original adventures Bert Coules, the chief dramatist of BBC
Radio 4's celebrated Sherlock Holmes canon, has imaginatively
fleshed out seven such unrecorded cases. The Determined Client:
Miss Addleton engages Holmes to save her father's good name. The
Striking Success of Miss Franny Blossom: Holmes investigates a
respectable gambling club. The Thirteen Watches: Bizarre events on
an express train brings a railway baron to Baker Street. The
Ferrers Documents: A slum landlord and a missing witness figure in
a dark tale of hatred and revenge. The Remarkable Performance of Mr
Frederick Merridew: A night at the music hall ends in tragedy. The
Eyes of Horus: A priceless Egyptian artefact vanishes from a locked
casket in a locked vault. The Marlbourne Point Mystery: Holmes and
Watson discover death, treachery and betrayal on an isolated
coastal headland.
Twelve classic Christie short stories are given a modern spin in
these BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisations. Agatha Christie is the
acknowledged 'Queen of Crime', and these twelve short stories
showcase her skilful plotting and talent for producing compelling
mysteries. First broadcast in the early 2000s, the stories were
adapted and brought up-to-date for a contemporary audience. Among
the star cast are Tom Hollander, Emilia Fox, Patricia Routledge,
Julia McKenzie, Neil Dudgeon, Richard Griffiths, Rebecca Front and
Andrew Sachs. Unconventional detective Parker Pyne features in two
of the stories, all twelve of which are infused with Agatha
Christie's trademark tension and suspense. These tantalising tales
of revenge, jealousy, love and death will thrill her many fans. The
stories are: Philomel Cottage Swan Song Magnolia Blossom Witness
for the Prosecution The Gates of Baghdad The Hound of Death In a
Glass Darkly The Dressmaker's Doll The Case of the Perfect Carer
