Campaign, capture and the long march to liberation
This substantial book, originally published in two volumes under
the title 'Narrative of a Forced March Through Spain and France as
a Prisoner of War During the Years 1810 to 1814', provides useful
historical context for all those interested in the war in the
Peninsula and the conditions of British prisoners in the hands of
the French leading up to the first abdication of Napoleon and the
Bourbon Restoration. We join Blayney, an officer engaged in the
campaign in Southern Spain, as a disastrous expedition finds him a
prisoner of the French Army, and so begins an adventure through
Spain-where the French are hounded by Spanish guerrillas-and into
the south of France as the British pursue their enemies. Blayney
has provided posterity with an interesting view 'behind the lines'
and combined that with insights into the France of the First Empire
and the reasons for its ultimate collapse.
During the final year of World War II, the defending Axis forces
were steadily driven from southern skies by burgeoning
Anglo-American power. This was despite the steady withdrawal of
units to more demanding areas. In this fifth volume of the series
the activities of the Allied tactical air forces in support of the
armies on the ground – as their opponents were steadily extracted
from northern Italy and the Balkans for the final defence of the
central European homeland – are described in detail. The book
commences with coverage of the final fierce air-sea battles over
the Aegean which preceded the advance northwards to Rome and the
ill-conceived British attempt to secure the Dodecanese islands
following the armistice with Italy. The authors also deal fully and
comprehensively with the advance northwards following the
occupation of Rome, and the departure of forces to support the
invasion of France from the Riviera coast, coupled with the
formation of a new Balkan Air Force in eastern Italy to pursue the
German armies withdrawing from Yugoslavia and take possession of
newly freed Greece. The effect of the creation within the same area
of the US and RAF strategic forces to join the Allied Combined
Bombing Offensive is discussed. The final volume in the series will
be concerned most especially with this latter campaign.

Revelation 19: 11-21 is a passage rich in symbol and allusion, much
of which proves elusive for interpreters restricting themselves to
Old Testament references. However, when Greco-Roman history and
mythology are examined, new possibilities are discovered.
Revelation 19 in Historical and Mythological Context analyzes the
Roman triumph and the Parthian threat as sources for the colorful
imagery in Revelation 19, ultimately exploring the Nero redivivus
myth as the nexus between the two and a key for unlocking the
passage. Paradox and parody are important themes in this technical
though theological study of the climax to the drama that is the
Apocalypse.
Bayesian statistical methods have become widely used for data
analysis and modelling in recent years, and the BUGS software has
become the most popular software for Bayesian analysis worldwide.
Authored by the team that originally developed this software, The
BUGS Book provides a practical introduction to this program and its
use. The text presents complete coverage of all the functionalities
of BUGS, including prediction, missing data, model criticism, and
prior sensitivity. It also features a large number of worked
examples and a wide range of applications from various disciplines.
The book introduces regression models, techniques for criticism and
comparison, and a wide range of modelling issues before going into
the vital area of hierarchical models, one of the most common
applications of Bayesian methods. It deals with essentials of
modelling without getting bogged down in complexity. The book
emphasises model criticism, model comparison, sensitivity analysis
to alternative priors, and thoughtful choice of prior distributions
all those aspects of the "art" of modelling that are easily
overlooked in more theoretical expositions. More pragmatic than
ideological, the authors systematically work through the large
range of "tricks" that reveal the real power of the BUGS software,
for example, dealing with missing data, censoring, grouped data,
prediction, ranking, parameter constraints, and so on. Many of the
examples are biostatistical, but they do not require domain
knowledge and are generalisable to a wide range of other
application areas. Full code and data for examples, exercises, and
some solutions can be found on the book's website.
Acclaimed author Andrew Thomas has chosen fifty fascinating cameos
of individual actions or incidents across a wide variety of major
and minor campaigns and scenarios ranging from the First World War
to the present day. Each selection is accompanied by relevant,
often rare, photographs. So, from the Battle of Mons in 1914
through shooting down a Zeppelin over Teeside, to WW2 Timor Ace
‘Butch’ Gordon in his Beaufighter in 1943 and a nightmare for
Halifaxes over Nuremburg in 1944, to SAAF fighters over Angola in
September 1985 and army support tasks in Mali in 2021, with many
more in between, the author’s hand-picked personal choices make
for gripping reading. A must for all those interested in the war in
the air throughout history.
