During the civil war period of China's history, from the fifth to the third century B.C., the Zhoa state sets out to conquer the small city state of Liang. As the invaders near the city, the fearful inhabitants beg for help from the local Mozi warrior clan but fear for the worst when only a single, solitary warrior, Ge Li (Lau), comes to their aid. All is not lost, however, as Li proves himself to be a master tactician, convincing the doubting townsfolk that they can repel the invaders. As the battle lines are drawn, Li, with the help of two local fighters, defies the odds and prepares for one last decisive battle.

Hark Tsui directs this lavish period action thriller set during the Tang Dynasty in Ancient China. Andy Lau stars as the titular Detective Dee, recently released from prison after an eight-year sentence for challenging the ascendancy of the soon-to-be-crowned Empress Wu Zetian (Carina Lau). After a series of suspicious deaths at court, the Empress herself releases Dee and orders him to investigate the deaths in time for her coronation ceremony. With the questionable assistance of the Empress's servant Jing'er (Bingbing Li) and albino police officer Pei Donglei (Deng Chao), Dee sets out to untangle the conspiracy and reinstate himself at court.

Leo (Andy Lau) and Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro) have been given the task of ferreting out the leaders of a revolutionary faction known as the Flying Daggers. Jin arrives in disguise at a brothel, where the members are allegedly working and is introduced to a beautiful blind dancer named Mei (Zhang Ziyi). But when Jin drunkenly attempts to have his way with her, Leo is forced to intervene and, after gaining her trust, arrests her and informs her that she'll be tortured if she doesn't tell all she knows about the Flying Daggers.
