This volume offers a critical examination of educational policy in
Ontario, Canada, and critiques the success of such policies in
ensuring diversity and equity of access in teacher hiring.
Providing comprehensive coverage of historical marginalization in
the Canadian education system, the book explains the rationale and
objectives of policies enacted with the aim of ensuring
"bias-free", or "colourblind" hiring. Drawing on qualitative data
to illustrate how educators' lived experiences often sit at odds
with the inclusivity that such policies claim to achieve, the book
presents the "Equity Hiring Toolkit" as a practical framework
enabling educational administrators to recognize how unconscious
biases and relative positions of power can implicate hiring
decisions. This text will benefit researchers, doctoral students,
and academics in the fields of teacher education, educational
policy, and multicultural education more broadly. Those interested
in the school leadership and management, as well as race and ethnic
studies will also enjoy this volume.

The only house that Benjamin Franklin ever owned stood in an airy
courtyard off Market Street in Philadelphia. He once called it "a
good House contrived to my Mind," but in reality it belonged as
much to his family as it did to him, who spent so much time abroad.
This volume is the brief story of the house and family that lived
there. It is also the story of its sad destruction and of the
fitting memorial raised on the original site.

This delightful book is a collection of incidental pieces that
reveal little-known aspects of the life and personality of Benjamin
Franklin. Written by the doyenne of Franklin scholars, it conveys
Franklin's humor, resiliency, courage, and intelligence, and his
faith in a better future.
The selections are based on Claude-Anne Lopez's research in the
treasure trove of nearly thirty thousand documents on Franklin
assembled at Yale University. They include a detailed refutation of
an anti-Semitic forgery attributed to Franklin and currently
circulating on the Internet; three mini-detective stories showing
Franklin on the fringes of the espionage world; discussions of
Franklin's efforts to outfit Washington's army and to choose the
first dinner set for the Foreign Service; and the tale of the
misadventures of a French utopian scheme he sponsored. The only
piece of fiction in the book is an imaginary party during which, on
the first anniversary of his death, six illustrious Frenchmen
discuss Franklin's influence on their country. Lopez has provided
brief personal introductions to each of the pieces, giving her
reasons for writing them and in the process threading the essays
together.
