The Routledge Handbook of Discourse Processes - Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition): Michael F. Schober, David N. Rapp, M.... The Routledge Handbook of Discourse Processes - Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Michael F. Schober, David N. Rapp, M. Anne Britt
R1,438 Discovery Miles 14 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The second edition of The Routledge Handbook of Discourse Processes provides a state-of-the-art overview of the field of discourse processes, highlighting the subject's interdisciplinary foundations and bringing together established and emergent scholars to provide a dynamic roadmap of the evolution of the field. This new edition reflects several of the enormous changes in the world since the publication of the first edition-changes in modes of communication and an increased urgency to understand how people comprehend and trust information. The contents of this volume attempt to address fundamental questions about what we should now be thinking about reading, listening, talking, and writing. The chapters collected here represent a wide range of empirical methods currently available: lab or field experiments, with a range of measures, from quantitative to qualitative; observational studies, including classrooms or organizational communication; corpus analyses; conversation analysis; computational modeling; and linguistic analyses. The chapters also draw attention to the explosion of contextually rich and computationally intensive data analysis tools which have changed the research landscape, along with more contemporary measures of people's discourse use, from eye-tracking to video analysis tools to brain scans. The Routledge Handbook of Discourse Processes, Second edition is the ideal resource for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in a variety of disciplines, including discourse analysis, conversation analysis, cognitive psychology, and cognitive science.

Reading - From Words to Multiple Texts (Paperback, New): Anne Britt, Susan Goldman, Jean-Francois Rouet Reading - From Words to Multiple Texts (Paperback, New)
Anne Britt, Susan Goldman, Jean-Francois Rouet
R1,561 Discovery Miles 15 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Increasing the mastery of reading and text literacy in the general population is one of the most important challenges faced by both developed and developing societies. Providing a new reference for researchers and practitioners involved in this domain, this book brings together empirical research on the multiple levels of language that are involved in reading. It emphasizes the concrete outcomes of scientific research, and illustrates the continuity among levels. The chapters deal with clearly articulated questions, provide up-to-date reviews of the literature, and include discussions of the impacts of research outcomes for the practice of reading instruction. Furthermore, the volume addresses the gap between restricted and more functional approaches to reading competency. Finally, it addresses some of the new issues that arise from the rapid changes in reading practices that are related to the diffusion of digital technologies. Featuring contributions from authors who are among the acknowledged leaders in the field and presenting the state of the art and current controversies in reading and literacy research, this volume honors the profound impact of Charles Perfetti on reading research.

M. Anne Britt, Jean-Francois Rouet, Amanda Durik
R4,743 Discovery Miles 47 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Literacy Beyond Text Comprehension aims to systematically investigate how readers interpret reading tasks within a situation, and how that interpretation influences reading behavior and comprehension. Presenting a new model of REading as problem SOLVing (RESOLV), the authors describe reading comprehension in terms of how a reader adopts goals within a particular situation that then guide what is read, when, and how. By applying the RESOLV model to a range of reading situations, this book provides evidence to suggest that there is no unitary understanding of a task, because individuals bring their own goals and characteristics to the situation; as such, it demonstrates the importance of understanding how a reader (e.g., student, test-taker, employee completing a work task) represents the context and the specific assignment. Written by internationally recognized learning sciences scholars, Literacy Beyond Text Comprehension advances the state of the art in reading research, but also seeks to inform a broader range of audiences, including those interested in the teaching and the assessment of reading.

Ann Britt Skjerve, Andreas Bye
R5,786 Discovery Miles 57 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Halden Man-Machine Laboratory (HAMMLAB) has been at the heart of human factors research at the OECD Halden Reactor Project (HRP). The HRP is sponsored by a group of national organizations, representing nuclear power plant regulators, utilities, and research institutions. The HRP is hosted by the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) in Halden, Norway. HAMMLAB comprises three full-scale nuclear power plant control room research simulators. The simulator studies performed in HAMMLAB have traditionally been experimental in nature. In a simulator it is possible to study events as they unfold in real time, in a highly realistic operational environment under partially controlled conditions. This means that a wide range of human factors issues, which would be impossible or highly impracticable to study in real-life settings, can thus be addressed in HAMMLAB. Simulator-based Human Factors Studies Across 25 Years celebrates the twenty-fifth anniversary of HAMMLAB by reviewing the human factors studies performed in HAMMLAB across this time-span. A range of human factors issues have been addressed, including: * human-system interfaces; * alarm systems; * computerized procedures; * human-automation interaction; * staffing, teamwork and human reliability. The aim of HAMMLAB studies has always been the same: to generate knowledge for solving current and future challenges in nuclear power plant operation to contribute to safety. The outcomes of HAMMLAB studies have been used to support design and assessment of nuclear power plant control rooms.

Text-based Learning and Reasoning - Studies in History (Hardcover): Charles A. Perfetti, M. Anne Britt, Mara C. Georgi Text-based Learning and Reasoning - Studies in History (Hardcover)
Charles A. Perfetti, M. Anne Britt, Mara C. Georgi
R4,144 Discovery Miles 41 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

History is both an academic discipline and a school subject. As a discipline, it fosters a systematic way of discovering and evaluating the events of the past. As a school subject, American history is a staple of middle grades and high school curricula in the United States. In higher education, it is part of the liberal arts education tradition. Its role in school learning provides a context for our approach to history as a topic of learning. In reading history, students engage in cognitive processes of learning, text processing, and reasoning. This volume touches on each of these cognitive problems -- centered on an in-depth study of college students' text learning and extended to broader issues of text understanding, the cognitive structures that enable learning of history, and reasoning about historical problems.
Slated to occupy a distinctive place in the literature on human cognition, this volume combines at least three key features in a unique examination of the course of learning and reasoning in one academic domain -- history. The authors draw theory and analysis of text understanding from cognitive science; and focus on multiple "natural" texts of extended length rather than laboratory texts as well as multiple and extended realistic learning situations.
The research demonstrates that history stories can be described by causal-temporal event models and that these models capture the learning achieved by students. This text establishes that history learning includes learning a story, but does not assume that story learning is all there is in history. It shows a growth in students' reasoning about the story and a linkage -- developed over time and with study -- between learning and reasoning. It then illustrates that students can be exceedingly malleable in their opinions about controversial questions -- and generally quite influenced by the texts they read. And it presents patterns of learning and reasoning within and between individuals as well as within the group of students as a whole.
By examining students' ability to use historical documents, this volume goes beyond story learning into the problem of document-based reasoning. The authors show not just that history is a story from the learner's point of view, but also that students can develop a certain expertise in the use of documents in reasoning.

Nina Malterud (Bilingual edition) (Hardcover): Jorunn Veiteberg Nina Malterud (Bilingual edition) (Hardcover)
Jorunn Veiteberg; Text written by Glenn Adamson, Jorunn Veiteberg, Anne Britt Ylvisaker; Designed by Oystein Arbo studio
R951 Discovery Miles 9 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nina Malterud is one of Norway's most prominent ceramics artists. Over the course of her five-decade-long career, she has developed a unique artistic oeuvre with references to traditional ceramic objects like plates, bowls, and tiles, but the emphasis is more on expression than on function. She explores the possibilities of clay and glazes in a free and undogmatic way, and is open to the visual results that can arise through controlled coincidences. The traces of the process are an essential part of her visual language. Sometimes the motifs are recognizable, but for the most part, she works with abstraction. The pieces radiate both tenderness and fragility, strength, and power. Combined with the materiality and weight of ceramics, the results are artworks with a strong sensory appeal.
