Conversations with Samuel Wilson, Jr. - Dean of Architectural Preservation in New Orleans (Paperback): Abbye Gorin Conversations with Samuel Wilson, Jr. - Dean of Architectural Preservation in New Orleans (Paperback)
Abbye Gorin; Foreword by Ronald Filson, Ann Masson
R498 Discovery Miles 4 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Architect, scholar, and civil leader, Samuel Wilson, Jr. was the founding president of the Louisiana Landmarks Society, which advocates historic preservation in New Orleans. A complement to Learning From Samuel Wilson, Jr., this second volume offers new information on historic preservation. The collection of interviews between Abbye A. Gorin and the renowned architect offers an intimate glimpse of what was involved in carrying out projects and executing research. Through candid conversations, the book exposes the complexities of architecture and the intricate steps involved in a restoration project. In addition to documenting Wilson's career, Conversations puts his contributions to American architecture into context. Period illustrations of such establishments as Banque de la Louisiane, the Hermann-Grima House, and the Beauregard House are interspersed throughout the text. The book also includes general information about the modern preservation movement and a list of suggested references.

Familiar to both locals and visitors, cast iron artistry remains an iconic characteristic of New Orleans. This pictorial study traces the iron work's history from its origins in England in the sixteenth century, to the establishment of the Leeds Iron Foundry in New Orleans in 1825, and cast iron's evolution into contemporary times. Mass-production methods made cast iron available for numerous types of building materials, and it was used for both decorative and structural purposes. In addition to noting the application of the material for bridges, beams, and girders, the book cites cast iron's popularity for fireplace fronts, mantels, and furniture. Because it was more durable than wood and cheaper than wrought iron, cast iron was available in many patterns. Ornate illustrations depict the various patterns of cast iron that have been used over the years, while sections of the text detail the difference between cast iron and wrought iron. Photographs portray examples of cast iron throughout the city of New Orleans, with the address of each establishment as a caption. The book also provides a list of local firms that specialized in ornamental iron working.

The Road to the Top of the Mountain (Paperback): Anne Masson, Matt Masson The Road to the Top of the Mountain (Paperback)
Anne Masson, Matt Masson
R463 Discovery Miles 4 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the extraordinary story of the road to recovery of Matt who, at the tail end of 2010 at the age of twenty-three, suffered a life-altering brain injury. Awakening from a six-week coma, he couldn't talk or even sit up in bed unsupported. It was clear that he wouldn't be able to resume his career as a water sports instructor, nor did it look very likely that he would be able to pursue his passion for skiing. However, Matt had other ideas. When he regained the ability to speak he declared that his first post-injury goal was to be skiing by the end of the year. The fact that he couldn't actually walk was but an obstacle to be overcome in due course. This turned out to be the first of many more challenging goals yet to come. He was discharged from the hospital after six months of intensive rehabilitation and therapy and only six months left to reach his first goal. The game was most definitely on. Not only did he get back on his skis by November 2011, but in 2018 he went on to graduate with a degree in Sports Journalism and, embracing his now wobbly walk, he embarked on a whole new career as the Wobbly Journo, specialising in writing about free-skiing. The Road to the Top of the Mountain allows the reader to accompany Matt on his recovery path as, supported by friends, family and the ski community at large, he battled his way back to an independent life with many adventures on the way in Europe and America. It also explains in a basic way how the brain works and what happens when it is damaged. It is an uplifting story of great hope and determination as told by his mother, Anne, with contributions from Matt throughout. "This is a story of resilience, positivity, adaptability and love." - Clare Balding "Matt Masson has been an incredible journey to partake in - a reminder that true passion helps us overcome even the largest of obstacles." - Jacob Webster, Swedish Freeskier "A truly remarkable story of incredible courage and tenacity from a young man determined not to let a life-changing injury stop him from fulfilling his dreams." - Dr. Tania Ahern
