A paperback edition for the student market, this standard work of
reference has been a bestseller for over 70 years. It is an
essential tool for anyone with a professional or leisure interest
in the care of animals. Much more than a list of veterinary terms,
its practical approach ensures that readers gain an insight into
the signs and symptoms of common, and less common, diseases, as
well as their diagnosis and treatment. For this edition much new
and updated information has been included, reflecting the numerous
developments that have taken place in animal care and husbandry,
and welfare. There is greatly expanded coverage of topics relating
to popular breeds of dog and cat, and the inheritable conditions
that might affect their health. Advances in medicine, surgery and
diagnostic techniques; descriptions of newly identified diseases
such as Schmallenberg virus; the resurgence of old scourges such as
TB in cattle, and ongoing enzootic infections such as bird flu are
also included in this edition. The growing risk of exotic diseases
such as heartworm being imported following the relaxation of travel
arrangements for dogs and cats is reflected in new entries. Notes
on many new species being farmed or kept as companion animals are
among the thousands of topics covered.
Epic adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's classic novel. During World War
Two, Charles Rider (Jeremy Irons) is stationed at the now deserted
stately home, Brideshead Manor, formerly the residence of the Flyte
family. He recalls how, as a Cambridge undergraduate, he first
visited Brideshead after befriending Lord Sebastian Flyte (Anthony
Andrews). Charles then became caught up with the Flytes and their
problems, most notably Sebastian's burgeoning alcoholism.
Oil shale is prevalent in the western states of Colorado, Utah, and
Wyoming. The resource potential of these shales is estimated to be
the equivalent of 1.8 trillion barrels of oil in place. Retorted
oil shale yields liquid hydrocarbons in the range of
middle-distillate fuels, such as jet and diesel fuel. However,
because oil shales have not proved to be economically recoverable,
they are considered a contingent resource and not true reserves. It
remains to be demonstrated whether an economically significant oil
volume can be extracted under existing operating conditions. In
comparison, Saudi Arabia reportedly holds proved reserves of 267
billion barrels.
As the price of gasoline approaches the 1981 record high (adjusted
for inflation), liquid transportation fuels synthesized from coal,
natural gas, and biomass are proposed as one solution to reducing
dependency on imported petroleum and strained refinery capacity.
The technology to do so developed from processes that directly and
indirectly convert coal into liquid fuel. Congress now faces
decisions on whether, and to what extent, it should support such a
solution. Lacking domestic petroleum resources, but abundant in
coal, Germany built synthetic fuel plants during World War II that
employed the Bergius coal hydrogenation process (direct
liquefaction), and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (indirect). The United
States attempted to capitalize on the German experience after World
War II. Despite considerable investment in synthetic fuel research
and development, the United States cut support for
commercialization when crude oil prices dropped and supplies
stabilized in the mid-1980s. Since then, several synthetic fuels
plants have been constructed around the world that convert coal,
natural gas, or biomass to liquid fuels using the Fischer-Tropsch
process. Several private ventures in the United States are now
studying the feasibility of constructing Fischer-Tropsch synthetic
fuel plants based on coal, natural gas, and biomass. Proposals to
expand the use of coal ...
