A moving account of one man's race to save a herd of elephants -
with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, The Elephant
Whisperer is an enthralling book that will appeal to animal lovers
and adventurous souls everywhere. When South African
conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of
'rogue' elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his
common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance
of survival - dangerous and unpredictable, they would be killed if
Anthony wouldn't take them in. As Anthony risked his life to create
a bond with the troubled elephants and persuade them to stay on his
reserve, he came to realize what a special family they were, from
the wise matriarch Nana, who guided the herd, to her warrior sister
Frankie, always ready to see off any threat, and their children who
fought so hard to survive.
Lawrence Anthony's South African game reserve is home to many animals he has saved, from a remarkable herd of elephants to a badly behaved bushbaby called George.
Described as 'the Indiana Jones of conservation', when one of his rhinos was brutally slaughtered for her horn, he didn't hesitate to lead an armed response against the poachers. Then he learned that there were only a handful of northern white rhinos left in the wild, living in an area of the Congo controlled by the infamous Lord's Resistance Army and soon to be hunted into extinction. Lawrence knew he had to take action.
What followed was an extraordinary adventure, as he headed into the jungle to negotiate with the rebels, while battling to save his own animals from terrible drought and to save the eyesight of his beloved elephant matriarch Nana. The Last Rhinos is peopled with unforgettable characters, both human and animal, and is a sometimes funny, sometimes moving, always exciting read.

Elephants are among the most magnificent – but also most
problematic –members of South Africa's wildlife population. While
they are sought after by South African and foreign tourists alike,
they also have a major impact on their environment. As a result,
elephant management has become a highly complex and often
controversial discipline. The information needed to underpin vital
decisions about elephant management has largely been unavailable to
decision-makers, contested by experts, or simply unknown. As a
result, the South African Minister for Environmental Affairs and
Tourism convened a round table to advise him on this issue. The
round table recommended that a scientific assessment of elephant
management be undertaken to gather, evaluate, and present all the
relevant information on this topic. Its main findings and
recommendations are contained in this volume. Elephant Management
is the first book of its kind, combining the work of more than 60
national and international experts. Extensively reviewed by
policy-makers and other stakeholders, it is the most systematic and
comprehensive review of savanna elephant populations and factors
relevant to managing them to date. As such it is of interest to a
broad spectrum of readers in South Africa and elsewhere. Above all,
it is aimed at helping conservation policy-makers and practitioners
to choose the best possible options for the sustainable
preservation of these iconic animals.
This fully illustrated catalogue is the first comprehensive
monograph on Alexis Smith in 30 years and presents the full range
of the artist's dynamic output, from her intimate artist books and
collages to large wall paintings and installations. Providing new
insights into Smith's work, this volume connects the themes that
have persisted throughout the artist's career, from her exploration
of identity and self-invention to her preoccupation with
stereotypes and cliches in film and literature. This publication
will introduce Smith's expansive body of work to a new generation
of viewers. Situated alongside movements of conceptual and pop art
and shaped by the feminist movements of the 1970s, Smith's singular
career expands our understanding of American art and provokes us to
think critically on the culture we share. Published to accompany a
major retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in

The inspiring true story of "the Indiana Jones of conservation."
--"The Guardian "(UK)
When Lawrence Anthony, author of "The Elephant Whisperer"," "
cared for not only elephants but other types of wildlife, including
rhinos, on his nature reserve. So when he learned that there were
only a handful of northern white rhinos left in the wild, living in
an area of the Congo controlled by the infamous Lord's Resistance
Army, he was determined to save them from extinction. If the world
lost this subspecies of rhinoceros, it would be the largest
landmammal since the woolly mammoth to go extinct, a tragedy for
those who care about the world's endangered species.
What followed was an extraordinary adventure, as Anthony headed
into the jungle to ask the rebels to help protect the rhino.
Sometimes funny, sometimes moving, and always exciting, " The Last
Rhinos "tells the story of his fight to save these remarkable
creatures.
