Face to Face - With the Great Apes: Anup Shah, Fiona Rogers Face to Face - With the Great Apes
Anup Shah, Fiona Rogers
R981 Discovery Miles 9 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Apes, they arouse very special feelings in many people because they are so similar to us. When we look into their eyes, we can feel the closeness to our own species. This is exactly the emotion conveyed in the coffee-table book Face to Face by Anup Shah and Fiona Rogers. In 60 fascinating photo portraits, the two nature photographers show chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and bonobos in close-ups taken in the animals' natural environment. For this, the renowned and multi-award-winning wildlife photographers lived together with the apes in the jungle for a long time and built up an intimate relationship of trust. Only in this way was it possible to capture these intimate portraits of the wild animals. In addition to the unique nature photography, the high-quality coffee table book also offers a lot of exciting background information on the history of the photographs. The individual photos are framed by interesting accounts of Anup's and Fiona's experiences during their lives with the animals. In wonderful stories, the two tell of the different characters of the animals photographed and thus give the reader hidden insights into the species of the great apes.

While e-commerce has experienced meteoric growth recently, security risks have similarly grown in scope and magnitude. Three major factors have driven the security risks in e-commerce: the growing reliance on the electronic medium for a company's core business, the growing complexity of the software systems needed to support e-commerce, and the value of the digital assets brought online to an inherently insecure medium - the Internet. While security has long been a primary concern in e-commerce, more recently privacy has also grown in importance to consumers. Many of the same Internet technologies that make e-commerce possible also make it possible to create detailed profiles of an individual's purchases, to spy on individual Web usage habits, and even to peer into confidential files that reside on an individual's machine. E-Commerce Security and Privacy is the first volume to pull together leading researchers and practitioners in diverse areas of computer science and software engineering to explore their technical innovations to problems in security and privacy in e-commerce. The information is drawn from selected papers presented at the first Workshop on Security and Privacy in E-Commerce (WSPEC'00) held in Athens, Greece, November 4, 2000. As such, E-Commerce Security and Privacy introduces both practitioners and researchers to innovations in secure and private e-commerce. Practitioners will gain great insight from the case studies, and researchers will learn about state-of-the-art protocols in secure and private e-commerce that will serve as the basis for future innovations in applied e-commerce technologies. E-Commerce Security and Privacy is suitable as a secondary text for agraduate level course, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.

National parks and game reserves are under threat from exploitation by tourists and by people living on their borders. Parks, although highly valued by conservationists, are not protected from unregulated economic behaviour within and outside their borders. In The Economics of Third World National Parks, Anup Shah argues that parks and reserves are worth preserving, rigorously analyses the problem and advocates solutions drawing on a wide range of sources. Issues discussed include the effects of economic activity on a national park, the tourist problem, valuing a national park and the use of cost-benefit decision making. Dr Shah uses economic analysis to explore institutional arrangements which would compensate for externalities resulting from exploitation and over-use by tourists and local communities. The price mechanism, he argues, is not a satisfactory tool with which to protect areas of rich bio-diversity. The Economics of Third World National Parks presents a clear and thoughtful application of economic thought, and especially the concept of externalities, to a key problem which current institutional structures seem unable to resolve.

Our cyber defenses are static and are governed by lengthy processes, e.g., for testing and security patch deployment. Adversaries could plan their attacks carefully over time and launch attacks at cyber speeds at any given moment. We need a new class of defensive strategies that would force adversaries to continually engage in reconnaissance and re-planning of their cyber operations. One such strategy is to present adversaries with a moving target where the attack surface of a system keeps changing.

"Moving Target Defense II: Application of Game Theory and Adversarial Modeling "includes contributions from world experts in the cyber security field. In the first volume of MTD, we presented MTD approaches based on software transformations, and MTD approaches based on network and software stack configurations. In thissecond volume of MTD, a group of leading researchers describe game theoretic, cyber maneuver, and software transformation approaches for constructing and analyzing MTD systems.

Designed as a professional book for practitioners and researchers working in the cyber security field, advanced -level students and researchers focused on computer science will also find this book valuable as a secondary text book or reference."

The book is a call for change in the present world-order which is dominated by free market consumer culture, military industrial interests and control and manipulation of freedom of people by using media and modern technology. It explains the history of development of democracy and its crisis in the framework of the present global-order, and takes a penetrating look into the issues of human rights which are being distorted by the economic interests of monopoly capitalism, or the authoritarian rulers. The book describes how we may replace the present system, which has been shaped mostly by the actions, will and freedom nurtured by the instinct-bound man, by an enlightened order, which would project the higher realm of consciousness of the human mind. Instead of building a society, which inspires man to grab, compete, dominate and exploit the weaker fellow beings by using the existing economic and military disparities in the world, it dreams about creating an enlightened-society where human beings may find meaning of life in sharing ones knowledge, innovation and creative abilities for the benefit of the mankind as a whole. It wishes to inspire the readers to pave the path of fulfilling the meaning of human existence as the bearer of a great cosmic mind and envisions a world of loving and compassionate human beings, who wish to empower, guide and teach the fellow human beings suffering around them. Without sinking in the belief that what are happening in the world today represent the true nature of the human behaviour, the book seeks to bring the changes in the "reality of history" by empowering, guiding and teaching the fellow human beings about the "higher-nature" of man which resides in us all.

R3,708 Discovery Miles 37 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book brings together Marxian philosophy and Lacanian psychoanalysis to argue that the hegemonic form of global capital is founded on the foreclosure of class and 'world of the third,' where 'world of the third' is the "inappropriate(d) outside" of hegemonic forms of capitalist development in the global South. The authors counterpose 'the world of the third' to the mainstream notion of the "third world," seen as a "lacking other" in desperate need of aid or humanitarianism. Thus, for them, the hegemonic form of global capital is engendered through the foregrounding of the 'poor,' 'victim' third world and the foreclosure of the non-capitalist 'world of the third.' Building on what they characterize as an "ab-original" reading of Marxian historical materialism and the Lacanian real, the authors seek to conceptualize a counter-hegemonic revolutionary subject as a basis for postcapitalist alternatives to the hegemonic form of global capital.

God came to give messages to a child that "He" did not exist in the figures of gods and goddesses, which people worshipped around him.Instead, God explained that "He" existed as a mystery, hidden from the world, who could not be seen, felt or touched by any one. Since then the child developed a secret friendship with God. However, there was an understanding between the child and God that the child will not divulge this secret encounter with the Divine to anyone in the outside world. When he stepped into adulthood, God started revealing Himself in a different way: In the same physical body two different existences started emerging. One was bound to the will and ego-bound mind, with whom he could identify himself as a person, while on the other side, there existed a Divine Being, who could penetrate the physical state and incarnate in a physical body - a phenomenon which could not be grasped by the human intellect. Later in life, as a highly creative person, with wide knowledge in many fields of science and arts, he grappled to understand these personal experiences, which defy all scientific knowledge and reason. The book throws lights on the questions: "Do these experiences represent a case of a brain damage, resulting in wrong neural circuitry, which generate the messages of God in the mind, or does there truly exist God, who is beyond intellectual comprehension of even a very sophisticated human mind? Without finding any convincing answer, a nuclear scientist and a cosmologist, after undergoing intense dilemma and conflicts for more than fifty years, remains at bay. On one hand this book reveals a hidden world, which has disturbed, puzzled and created agony and despair, while on the other hand it has illumined the mind with knowledge and vision, not accessible through intellectual process of the mind. It is a story of pain and joy, suffering followed by profound ebullience of a spirit which is one with the cosmos and resides in us.
