They came from around the world: from parliaments, senates, and
assemblies; from temples, churches, and mosques; from laboratories,
universities, and boardrooms. It was the first time that spiritual
and parliamentary leaders had come together with scientific experts
to confront the threats of environmental crisis, nuclear war,
famine, and disease. After five days of dialogue and contemplation
the participants pledged to join forces to care for and protect the
Earth with all its interdependent forms of life. This unprecedented
meeting--the Global Survival Conference held at Oxford in April
1988--is re-created here in a compelling eyewitness account that
offers hope for the future of our planet.
Anil Gharai is arguably one of the most significant authors of
Bangla Dalit literature. His works deal with the stark everyday
realities of people on the margins and the complex interplay of
domination and subjugation in these spaces. This volume of English
translations of some of his most celebrated works seeks to
introduce his writings to a new readership in India and abroad. In
his works, Gharai explored caste-based and gender-based oppression
in the rural areas of coastal Bengal. His protagonists are from
remote spaces, from the Dalit community or the indigenous
communities—men and women who work and live in extremely
exploitative circumstances and whose lives are depicted by Gharai
with great care and detail. His novels, short stories, and poems,
translated in this volume, give voice to the unrepresented and
offer a critique of the oppressive caste and class hierarchies and
traditions in eastern India. He also focuses on the replication of
patriarchal mores within Dalit society and culture. This volume
includes critical essays on Anil Gharai and his long interview to
reflect on his position in the alternative literary canon of Bangla
Dalit literature. Part of the Voices from the Margins series, this
critical edition seeks to visibilise the less visible literary
texts and traditions. It will be of interest to those scholars
engaged in contemporary Indian/South Asian literary cultures,
comparative literature, modern Indian literature, minority studies,
Dalit studies and gender studies. It will also be useful to
students and researchers of social sciences and humanities.

Can Gandhi be considered a systematic thinker? While the
significance of Gandhi's thought and life to our times is
undeniable it is widely assumed that he did not serve any
discipline and cannot be considered a systematic thinker. Despite
an overwhelming body of scholarship and literature on his life and
thought the presuppositions of Gandhi's experiments, the systematic
nature of his intervention in modern political theory and his
method have not previously received sustained attention. Addressing
this lacuna, the book contends that Gandhi's critique of modern
civilization, the presuppositions of post-Enlightenment political
theory and their epistemological and metaphysical foundations is
both comprehensive and systematic. Gandhi's experiments with truth
in the political arena during the Indian Independence movement are
studied from the point of view of his conscious engagement with
method and theory rather than merely as a personal creed, spiritual
position or moral commitment. The author shows how Gandhi's
experiments are illustrative of his theoretical position, and how
they form the basis of his opposition to the foundations of modern
western political theory and the presuppositions of the modern
nation state besides envisioning the foundations of an alternative
modernity for India, and by its example, for the world.
The book captures the developments, challenges and opportunities in
the fields of counselling and career guidance in Asia, highlighting
issues and concerns that are unique to Asian regions as well as
those that are common with other parts of the world. This book
addresses multiple gaps in the counselling and career guidance
literatures: it covers Eastern contexts and includes a focus on the
distinctive needs of rural communities and those of small states.
Gender is a prominent theme as well. The chapters in the book are
diverse in terms of settings and participants, topics, and segments
of the life span. The reader can develop insight about the current
status of the counselling and career guidance fields in Asian
contexts and identify relevant aspects that need change or
strengthening. The guidelines for policy development that have been
suggested in many chapters in this edited volume are of
considerable practical value. The discussions in the book draw
attention to context-specific features as well as underscore themes
that are recurrent across regions and countries. The book has
utility, therefore, for readers from all countries. Counselling and
Career Guidance in Asia will be relevant to students and
researchers interested in educational psychology, counselling
psychology, vocational psychology, career development, human
learning, the learning sciences, and psychological research methods
in education and psychology. The chapters in this book were
originally published as a special issue of British Journal of
Guidance & Counselling.

With digital automation becoming ubiquitous, the relationship
between man and machine is being redefined. This book, through a
focus on America, identifies the tension this relationship has
produced, and how it has divided America socially, politically, and
economically, ultimately breeding two fundamentally incompatible
nations within one: the "forgotten America" and "elite America."
This book enables the reader to visualize the changes brought by
automation on our producer and buyer identities, and suggests
policy changes that global leaders could adopt to deal with the
increasing discord. The book is heavily dependent on a few
fundamental concepts of both economics and sociology, such as
globalization, labor economics, and cultural homogenization. The
book is ideally suited to students and academics researching
political economics and sociology, with focuses on globalization,
unemployment, and the social impacts of technological advances.
Surfactants are often completely invisible to us and yet they are
present in almost every chemical that we use in our daily life.
They are found in toothpastes, cosmetics, sunscreens, mayonnaise,
detergents, and an array of cleaning products. Traditional
surfactants are known to have adverse environmental impacts
spurring research into eco-friendly and cost-effective surfactants
from renewable resources. Surfactants from Renewable Raw Materials
examines the class of surfactants synthesized using plant-based raw
materials detailing their properties, applications,
bioavailability, and biodegradability. The concluding chapter
reviews patent activity over the last decade. Additional features
include: Addresses the tremendous variation found in the raw
materials used to synthesize commercially available surfactants.
Explores the selection of raw materials based upon the desired
hydrophobic group or hydrophilic group to be incorporated into the
product. Examines the characteristics and medicinal applications of
pulmonary surfactants in preterm babies as well as their probable
contribution in COVID-19 Discusses the biodegradability of
surfactants to assist with the determination of truly green
surfactants. This comprehensive reference will prove indispensable
for professional and academic researchers creating or working with
bio-based surfactants.
This book sketches the history of political forces in modern India.
It begins defining these political categories of left, right and
far-right with the usual reference to French Revolution (for want
of an indigenous equivalent), and discusses movement of forces
towards left, or towards the right from the balance of
socio-political forces or status quo at a point of time in India.
It recalls historical facts, uses chronological order for clarity
and leaders’ names and political parties, their world view and
ideas of nation, social groups they represented, and their
movements. It progresses by reopening only a few windows to modern
Indian history and looks at periods like, the 1920-30s, and
1970-80s, when there were significant movements and consolidation
of socio-political forces to the right and far right. At the late
1960s and early 1970s, there were a series of policy proposals,
legislations to nationalize assets and launch direct attacks on
poverty that marked a sharp turn to the leftist ideology in Delhi
(the central government of the time). Following these, a coalition
of mostly right-wing forces rose to challenge the government at the
centre and succeeded. This occurred in the context of heated Cold
War geopolitics. Taylor and Francis does not sell or distribute the
print editions of this book in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan,
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
This book proposes that work on the Women, Peace and Security
agenda undertaken by civil society actors can be interpreted as a
form of care labour that nourishes and sustains the agenda -
without which the agenda could not, in fact, succeed. The care
labour of civil society is thus a condition of the Women, Peace and
Security agenda's success. United Nations Security Council
resolution 1325 is the foundation of a diverse and pluralising
policy framework known as the Women, Peace and Security agenda.
Over the 20 years since the adoption of the foundational
resolution, despite sustained resistance from some quarters and a
general lack of adequate resourcing and political will, the agenda
has continued to see many successes, and to achieve elements of
political transformation large and small. This book explores how
the supporting constituency of the agenda has 'made 1325 work'.
Based on new interviews with representatives of diverse civil
society organisations working on WPS, the book offers a novel
intervention into WPS scholarship, which has thus far paid
relatively little attention to the labours of civil society actors
working on WPS, particularly on an individual level. The authors
consider the motivations, pressures and frustrations experienced by
WPS civil society actors, as well as the goals and challenges. This
book is based on original research and will be of interest to
scholars, policymakers and practitioners working on WPS
specifically, and those working in Political Science, International
Relations, Development Studies, and on the global governance of
peace and security. It will also be relevant for students in
WPS-focused programs and of peace and security studies more
broadly.

Through the theoretical lenses of dress studies, gender, science,
and visual studies, this volume analyses the impact John Ruskin has
had on architecture throughout the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries. It explores Ruskin's different ideologies, such as the
adorned wall veil, which were instrumental in bringing focus to
structures that were previously unconsidered. John Ruskin and the
Fabric of Architecture examines the ways in which Ruskin perceives
the evolution of architecture through the idea that architecture is
surface. The creative act in architecture, analogous to the divine
act of creation, was viewed as a form of dressing. By adding highly
aesthetic features to designs, taking inspiration from the 'veil'
of women's clothing, Ruskin believed that buildings could be
transformed into meaningful architecture. This volume discusses the
importance of Ruskin's surface theory and the myth of feminine
architecture, and additionally presents a competing theory of
textile analogy in architecture based on morality and gender to
counter Gottfried Semper's historicist perspective. This book would
be beneficial to students and academics of architectural history
and theory, gender studies and visual studies who wish to delve
into Ruskin's theories and to further understand his capacity for
thinking beyond the historical methods. The book will also be of
interest to architectural practitioners, particularly Ruskin's
theory of surface architecture.
