This book provides one of the best currently available overviews of
human-computer interaction across different cultures, disciplines
and countries. It contains the selected proceedings of Interact '95
- the Fifth International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction
- arranged by the International Federation for Information
Processing and held in Lillehammer, Norway, in June 1995.
Opera, for those not acquainted with its conventions, can be
confounding. This book contains analyses of the stories and music
of nine beloved operas, presented in chronological order from the
late 1700s through the early 1900s. These works are most readily
approached with an understanding of the conventions of the genres,
as well as the social conditions that influenced the composers and
librettists. In examining each work, the various genres are
explained, and the popular and intellectual movements that
influenced the operas are discussed, as well as the original source
material. The operas covered in the text are Mozart's The Magic
Flute, Beethoven's Fidelio, Donizetti's Lucia de Lammermoor,
Wagner's The Flying Dutchman, Verdi's Rigoletto, Bizet's Carmen,
Leonvacallo's Pagliacci, Strauss' Salome, and Brecht's The
Threepenny Opera.
Giacomo Puccini, composer of some of the world's most popular
operas, including La Boheme, Tosca, and Madame Butterfly, was also
a highly literary person who based his librettos on existing works
of literature. This work explores that literary inheritance in an
effort to enhance the listener's appreciation of the operatic
experience. The author argues that the majority of Puccini's operas
compose a grand cycle that finds its roots in the romance genre of
12th century France, serving to celebrate the strong, independent
heroine. Via a close examination of the source works, the
librettos, and the scores, this book offers fresh perspective on
Puccini's legacy.
Modifications and Targeting of Protein Termini, Part B, Volume 686
in the Methods in Enzymology serial, highlights new advances in the
field with this new volume presenting interesting chapters on a
variety of timely topics, including In vitro production of N-degron
fused proteins and its application, Identification of N-degrons and
N-recognins using peptide pull-downs combined with quantitative
mass spectrometry-based proteomics, Monitoring ADO-dependent
proteolysis in cells using fluorescent reporter proteins,
Monitoring the interactions between N-degrons and N-recognins of
the Arg/N-degron pathway, Characterization and chemical modulation
of p62/SQSTM1/Sequestosome-1 as an autophagic N-recognin of the
Arg/N-degron pathway. Other chapters cover Analysis of higher plant
N-degron pathway components and substrates via expression in S.
cerevisiae, Building libraries to dissect terminal degrons with
fluorescent timers, Affinity isolation and biochemical
characterization of N-degron ligands using the N-recognin, ClpS,
Probing the effects of N-terminal acetylation on a-synuclein
structure, aggregation and toxicity, Increasing the coverage of the
N-terminome with Lys-N Amino Terminal enrichment (LATE), and more.
The first woman to ski solo to the South Pole tells the story of
what it took to get there At home in Norway it is eight o’clock
on Christmas Eve night, but ahead, at the Amundsen–Scott base
that has been visible for hours, it is already early in the morning
of Christmas Day when Liv Arnesen, after skiing solo for 745 miles
in fifty days, finally arrives. She had been dreaming of the South
Pole for most of her forty-one years, and now, even in her joy at
having reached her goal in December 1994, she has to ask herself:
what took you so long? In Skiing into the Bright Open Arnesen
describes the exhausting, exhilarating experience of being the
first known woman to ski unsupported to the South Pole. She also
answers her own question, framing her account of her historic
expedition with her longtime struggle to find the freedom and
confidence to follow her dreams into uncharted territory.Â
From her childhood in Norway to the seasons she spent working as a
guide on Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean,
Arnesen courted the cold, and her memoir reflects the knowledge and
passion for Arctic and Antarctic exploration that grew with her
adventures in the wintry reaches of Norway and beyond. Tracing her
path from the heroic stories of explorers like Fridtjof Nansen and
Ernest Shackleton to her own crossing of the Greenland Ice Cap in
1992, Arnesen credits the inspiring feats of those who preceded her
but also describes the obstacles—including niggling
self-doubt—that tradition, convention, and downright prejudice
put in her way as she endeavored to find the support and
sponsorship granted to men in her field. A tale of solitary
adventure in the bleak and beautiful bone-chilling cold of
Antarctica, Skiing into the Bright Open tells a story of gritty
determination, thrilling achievement, and perseverance in the face
of near despair and daunting odds; it is, ultimately, an object
lesson in the power of a dream if one is willing to pursue it to
the ends of the earth.
Methods in Enzymology serial highlights new advances in the field
with this new volume presenting interesting chapters. Each chapter
is written by an international board of authors.
The American civil rights movement represents one of the most
remarkable social revolutions in all of world history. While no one
would discount the significance of the leadership of Martin Luther
King and others, we should also recognize that the fight could not
have been waged without the countless foot soldiers in the
trenches. As an important corrective to the traditional "great man"
studies, these essays emphasize the importance of grassroots
actions and individual agency in the effort to bring about national
civil renewal. These biographies assert the importance of
individuals on the local level working towards civil rights and the
influence that this primarily African-American movement had on
others including La Raza, the Native American Movement, feminism,
and gay rights. Through engaging biographies of such varied
individuals as Abraham Galloway, Ida B. Wells, James K. Vardaman,
Jose Angel Gutierrez, and Sylvia Rivera, Glisson widens the scope
of most Civil Rights studies beyond the 1954-1965 time frame to
include its full history since the Civil War. By widening the time
frame studied, these essays underscore the difficult, often
unrewarded and generational nature of social change.
The extraordinary story of the first two women to cross Antarctica
The fascinating chronicle of Liv Arnesen and Ann Bancroft’s
dramatic journey as the first two women to cross Antarctica, No
Horizon Is So Far follows the explorers from the planning of their
expedition through their brutal trek from the Norwegian sector all
the way to McMurdo Station as they walked, skied, and ice-sailed
for almost three months in temperatures reaching as low as -35°F,
all while towing their 250-pound supply sledges across 1,700 miles
of ice full of dangerous crevasses. Through website transmissions
and satellite phone calls, Ann and Liv, two former schoolteachers,
were able to broadcast their expedition to more than three million
students in sixty-five countries to teach geography, science, and
the importance of following your dreams. Â
Despite ambitious political plans and substantial economic
investments, there are - at best - mixed experiences with the
introduction of ICTs in classroom settings in most western
countries. Norway is an interesting case in point because it is the
OECD country with the highest ICT use among pupils and the best
school level ICT infrastructure, yet at the same time experiences
the greatest relative decline in skills and knowledge from 2003 to
2009 as measured in the PISA study. In trying to better understand
some of the processes responsible for this state of affairs, this
book examines how and why teachers of English as a foreign language
(EFL) make use of ICTs in their teaching. Based on data from a
national survey of lower secondary school EFL-teachers, it is
possible to discern the common characteristics of high ICT
intensity teachers. Among the most salient factors we find stronger
faith in the objectives set out in national plans and strategies.
Educational ICT initiatives enter a subject specific context which
must be sufficiently acknowledged by administrators and policy
makers in order to make optimal use of ICTs' positive potential.
