Originally published in 1985, this book sought to thoroughly examine and better understand a dimension of interpersonal relations which at the time had often proven elusive, confusing, and quite difficult to operationalize. Empathy had been diversely defined, hard to measure, often resistant to change, yet emerged as a singularly important influence in human interaction. The Editors lengthy effort to better understand its nature, consequences and alteration was not an easy journey, yet was a rewarding one. This book presents the fruits of their journey, and thus they hoped the reader would feel equally rewarded. The several diverse definitions of empathy are sequentially presented and examined in Chapter 1, in an effort to begin this book with a shared understanding of the major historical and contemporary meanings of the construct. The Editors conclude this initial chapter by subscribing themselves to a particular components definition of empathy, a definition they predict will prove particularly useful in enhancing future understanding, investigation, and application of empathic behaviour. This components definition, therefore, substantially influences and shapes much of the content of the rest of the book.

This widely used staff training DVD is designed for teachers and school counseling staff who work with students who display aggression, immaturity, withdrawal, or other problem behaviors. It illustrates the concepts and training procedures contained in the books Skillstreaming the Adolescent and Skillstreaming the Elementary School Child. The DVD contains scenes of actual training sessions that show Arnold Goldstein and Ellen McGinnis working with small groups of adolescents and elementary students. The students learn specific prosocial skills, such as resisting peer pressure, dealing with teasing, and responding to an accusation.
An effective gang intervention programme, Aggression Replacement Training (ART), is the subject of this book. Rearrest rates and other outcome results support the success of a project using the ART intervention approach with a series of very aggressive juvenile gangs in New York. Working with gangs as a unit, the goal was not only to teach them anger control and other skills, but to do so in such a way that their real-world reference group (the gang) was turned, as much as possible, into a prosocial rather than an antisocial support group. In addition, the book provides a thorough introduction to the history of gangs, current gang demographics, gang aggression and its etiology, as well as a review and critique of the various interventions that have been tried.
