"?" Is the evolutionary achievement of a dominant intelligence the inevitable precursor to species self destruction? Is this why we are the only member of the genus Homo left on Earth? Is this why, despite our efforts, we have not contacted alien intelligence? This is a book of essay meditations about humankind - a 'Naked Ape' who is still in the process of evolving but is also now having to deal with the problems which arise out of his very recently acquired intelligence. This seems dangerously difficult for him. The world now has developed a very real and immensely complicated and dangerous technological envirnonment which is rapidly replacing his old, natural environment - with, very possibly, disastrous consequences. Human psychology has not kept up with his technology and humankind is having great difficulty in adjusting safely to a now frightening achievement of global domination. Human willingness to revert to the behavioral ideals of nationalism, racism and, in particular, religion, leave this now globally dominant species fragmented by aggressive tribal attitudes, dicing with the destruction of not only humanity itself, but a great deal of life on planet Earth.
This book is a further collection of poems written by Arthur Dunkley. In this volume the emphasis is on the genre of 'Veldsinger' poetry, originally introduced in his previously published poetry collection called 'Seventy'. Poetic eulogy of the landscape of any nation occurs all over the world, in both writing and song. In this case the landscape and life of southern Africa is the subject material, the word 'veld' being widely used for much of the wild, open habitat of many of the countries in this region. There are plenty of 'other' kinds of poems in the collection to give the anthology a breadth of subject material and interest.
This book represents a collection of poetry from a much larger body of work written by Arthur Dunkley during the course of a lifetime lived mostly in Africa, with some years spent in the UK. It covers several subject categories ranging from abstract, descriptive, narrative and philosophical work to love poems and war poetry. The poems are generally short and direct and easily understood and enjoyed. The book is beautifully illustrated by the author's own photographic images. Arthur has previously published four small illustrated books of descriptive 'veldsinger' verse and a few of these poems are included in this anthology.
