NATO Advanced Research Workshop "The Black Sea: Strategy for
Addressing its Energy Resource Development and Hydrogen Energy
Problems" was held in order to evaluate the Black Sea Region's
environment, discuss the ways and means of protecting it, and to
evaluate the methods of production of the energy carrier, hydrogen.
Papers presented at the workshop, proposed various methods of
hydrogen production from the hydrogen sulfide, from marine macro
algae and other bacteria, storage and utilization of hydrogen, oil
spills and pollutants in the Black Sea, degradation of the sea and
the land around the region, and ways and means of protecting the
environment. The workshop participants unanimously expressed the
need to establish close cooperation amongst the Region's countries
regarding the development of its energy resources, and at the same
time protecting its environment. These recommendations have been
put together in the Batumi Manifesto. This book entitled "Black Sea
Energy Resource Development and Hydrogen Energy Problems" puts
together the papers presented at the workshop, starting with the
Batumi Manifesto. This valuable volume should be in the libraries
of all the scientists, engineers, environmentalists, economists and
decision makers involved in the development of the Black Sea Region
and in the introduction of clean and abundant Hydrogen Energy.
This book presents selected contributions to the NATO Advanced
Research Workshop "Carbon Nanomaterials in Clean Energy Hydrogen
Systems" held in June 2010. These original papers reflect recent
progress in response to the modern-day requirements in chemistry of
carbon nanomaterials and metal-hydrogen systems. Successor to the
2008 proceedings, this second volume focuses on research and
application studies of materials capable of interacting actively
with hydrogen, also addressing questions of hydrogen accumulation
and storage. As a whole, it provides a review of the most relevant
areas of hydrogen materials interactions and carbon nanomaterials
science, making it invaluable for all researchers, physicists,
chemists, post-graduates and young scientists interested in the
structure, properties and applications of different nanocarbon
materials.

The energy arteries of the corporate body of mankind are still fed
mainly by fossil fuels; but they are in danger of running dry soon
unless new energy sources are made available.
One of the most important as well as the most ecologically pure
power source is hydrogen, that constitutes the heart of hydrogen
power engineering and considered as a future alternative to fossil
power sources.
The chemistry of carbon nanomaterials and hydrogen materials
science will play an important role in hastening the conversion to
the Hydrogen Energy System.
In this connection the research and application of materials
capable of interacting actively with hydrogen, its accumulating and
storing will be of the utmost significance. This is of particular
actuality for creation of mobile energy sources both for mobile
telephones and for hybrid electric cars that are developed by all
large car manufacturers of the world. In this connection the
hydrogen capacity of carbon nanostructural materials, such as
fullerenes, nanotubes, nanofibers and other nanostructures, has
aroused a special interest of researchers.
Hydriding metals, alloys, nanocarbon and composite materials can
store hydrogen safely at relatively low pressures and temperatures.
Very many other applications are also possible - such as heating
and cooling, waste heat storage, pumping, pressurizing,
heat-pumping, hydrogen purifying, deuterium separation, electricity
production, etc.
As a source of 'clean' energy, hydrogen is also going to be the
permanent answer to another global problem caused by utilization of
fossil fuels, such as the greenhouse effect, climate change, acid
rains, ozone layer depletion, pollution and oil spills.
