A chilling literary thriller about a motiveless murder in
provincial China 'One of the most important voices to emerge from
the People's Republic in years' Daily Express On a normal day in
provincial China, a teenager goes about his regular business, but
he's also planning the brutal murder of his only friend. He lures
her over, strangles her, stuffs her body into the washing machine
and flees town, whereupon a perilous game of cat-and-mouse begins.
A shocking investigation into the despair that traps the rural poor
as well as a technically brilliant excursion into the
claustrophobic realm of classic horror and suspense, A Perfect
Crime is a thrilling and stylish novel about a motiveless murder
that echoes Kafka's absurdism, Camus' nihilism and Dostoyevsky's
depravity. With exceptional tonal control, A Yi steadily reveals
the psychological backstory that enables us to make sense of the
story's dramatic violence and provides chillingly apt insights into
a country on the cusp of enormous social, political and economic
change.

Fieldwork Connections tells the story of the intertwined research
histories of three anthropologists working in Liangshan Yi
Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, China in the late twentieth
century. Chapters are written alternately by a male American
anthropologist, a male researcher raised in a village in Liangshan,
and a highly educated woman from an elite Nuosu/Chinese family. As
decades of mutual ethnographic research unfold, the authors enter
one another's narratives and challenge the reader to ponder the
nature of ethnographic "truth." The book begins with short accounts
of the process by which each of the authors became involved in
anthropological field research. It then proceeds to describe the
research itself, and the stories begin to connect as they become
active collaborators. The scene shifts in the course of the
narrative from China to America, and the relationship between the
authors shifts from distant, wary, and somewhat hierarchical to
close, egalitarian, and reciprocal. The authors share their
histories through personal stories, not technical analyses; their
aim is to entertain while addressing the process of ethnography and
the dynamics of international and intercultural communication.
The central story in this book tells of an upright man resisting
the temptations of easy bribes and easy satisfactions and winning
for his honesty nothing but scorn.
This book is a compelling must-read for everyone. It is a
quick-read. Dr. Bertha Ayi skillfully, thoughtfully, and powerfully
proposes to you God's burning desire for you to be joyful and how
He wants you to express that joy. The book is guaranteed to improve
your mood and unlock the joy that has been lying dormant in you.
You will feel God's love flying off the pages. She explains what
joy is and is not. She unashamedly talks about her own discovery of
the sweetness of walking in joy. The book promises to deliver a
mountain-top experience just like its cover depicts. In a very
practical and yet simple way, she discusses how joy is as vital to
your emotional well-being as air and water are to your body. It is
the oil that lubricates your life. When you are joyful it delights
God. She reveals secrets tucked away in the Bible attesting to
this. You will view the world through a more colorful lens as she
builds a realistic expectation of the bright future that lies ahead
of you. She shows you how to be joyful, because you are a winner.
You will absolutely love reading this book.
