This is a glossary of over 1000 terms used in Plant Pathology - the study of Plant Diseases. It covers terms in use in the current editions of the different internationally mandated and proposed books. Any abbreviations, latinizations and synonyms are incorporated, as are terms which are either no longer employed, are used outside the formal nomenclatural Codes, or are otherwise likely to be encountered. As some of the terms used in the classification of plant communities are identical to those of whole organisms, terms used in phytosociological nomenclature are also included. It is intended for use as a reference work by all biologists, especially those involved with the description or re- classification of organisms, as well as those investigating the status and application of previously proposed names.
The efficacy of different Pleurotus ostreatus (L.) isolates to treat pulp and paper industrial effluent on a shake flask and fermentor were studied. In the shake flask and fermentor studies, Pleurotus ostreatus decolorized the effluent 69.68% and 66.66% respectively, on 7TH day of incubation. The chemical oxygen demand was reduced by 61.3% by Pleurotus ostreatus on day 7 of incubation. Various cultural conditions including different glucose concentrations, nitrogen sources, pH, temperature and incubation period influence on biomass and different enzymes viz; xylanase, CMCase and laccase production by Pleurotus ostreatus IMPP-02 were optimized in shake flask cultures. Under these culture conditions, the maximum level of xylanase activity (9.29 Uml-1), CMCase (7.37 U ml-1), laccase (13.57 U ml-1) and effluent decolorization (69.68%) were observed on 7th day during shake flask studies. Furthermore, the optimum pH and temperature were found to be 5.0 and 30 C, respectively in fermentor studies. The maximum color reduction of 66.66 %; biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction of 65.35 % and 61.3 % respectively, were determined during fermentor studies.
Fungi are organisms which are taxonomically, environmentally and medically important organisms. They hold a prominent position among all the decomposing organisms. They exist in the Unicellular form as Aspergillus fumigatus, Alternaria alternaria, Venturia inequalis e.t.c. and also in the multicellular for such as Ganoderma lucidum, Agaricus biporus, Amanita muscaria e.t.c. They are equally harmful for the growing crops, livestocks and human beings. It is need of the hour to identify their environmental niche. It is also important to deal with their laboratory handlings. This manuscript is an attempt to give the laboratory techniques for the handling of Basidiomycetec which is most advanced form of the fungi.
