Increased investment in the mining sector in Africa is often
presented as a key strategy to leverage growth and development on
the continent. It has been described as a "motor for growth," which
will contribute to poverty reduction. Massive investment has taken
place, but the results in crucial areas such as sustainable
economic and social development have been extremely disappointing.
These outcomes are most frequently attributed to dysfunctional
internal governance processes, mismanagement and corruption. Much
attention has been given in recent years to the issue of "the poor
resource governance" in mineral rich countries. In this volume,
academics, policy-makers and practitioners from Africa and beyond
aim to achieve a better understanding of these issues by proposing
a renewal of approaches. Discussing the cases of Ghana, Mali and
the Democratic Republic of the Congo they explore new ways of
thinking about issues concerning governance and revenue flows.
In the early twentieth century, the magic of radio was new,
revolutionary, and poorly understood. A powerful symbol of
modernity, radio was a site where individuals wrestled and came to
terms with an often frightening wave of new mass technologies.
Radio was the object of scientific investigation, but more
importantly, it was the domain of tinkerers, "hackers," citizen
scientists, and hobbyists. This book shows how this wild and
mysterious technology was appropriated by ordinary individuals in
Germany in the first half of the twentieth century as a leisure
activity. Clubs and hobby organizations became the locus of this
process, providing many of the social structures within which
individuals could come to grips with radio, apart from any media
institution or government framework. In so doing, this book
uncovers the vital but often overlooked social context in which
technological revolutions unfold.
Following in the tradition of its popular predecessor, the Manual
of Geospatial Science and Technology, Second Edition continues to
be the authoritative volume that covers all aspects of the field,
both basic and applied, and includes a focus on initiating,
planning, and managing GIS projects. This comprehensive resource,
which contains contributions from 53 leading experts and professors
in the areas of GIS, GPS, and remote sensing, reflects the very
latest advances in the technology, applications, and usage of the
geospatial sciences in many key disciplines, from natural resource
analysis to transportation planning. Significantly updated and
expanded, this reader-friendly manual introduces the fundamentals
in mathematics and physics needed to perform area-wide mapping,
inventory, data conversion, and analysis. The text maintains a
focus on the practical aspects of these technologies and remains
the only resource to cover the areas of GIS, GPS, and remote
sensing with such breadth and clarity. An expanded index, new and
revised figures, a color insert, and an easier to read format are
among the many improvements to this edition. New to the Second

MIRROR for MAGISTRATES f INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION SINCE the
publication of Wartons History of English Poetry, 1 some account of
the Mirrorfor Magistrates has been included in almost every history
of English literature. 2 Bibliographers have recognized as
intriguing the complex history of its printing. 3 Sackvilles
induction has been decreed the best poem in English between Chaucer
and Spenser and is duly incorporated in anthologies of the period.
Historians of the drama have from time to time noted that the work
contains tragedies which in the reign of Elizabeth were remade in
dramatic form...
Death squads have become an increasingly common feature of the modern world. In nearly all instances, their establishment is tolerated, encouraged, or undertaken by the state itself, which thereby risks its monoply on the use of force, one of the fundamental characteristics of modern states. Why do such a variety of regimes, under very different circumstances, condone such activity? Death Squads in Global Perspective hopes to answer that question and explain not only their development, but also why they can be expected to proliferate in the early 21st century.
Now in full color, the sixth edition of this leading text features new chapters on remote sensing platforms (including the latest satellite and unmanned aerial systems), agriculture (including agricultural analysis via satellite imagery), and forestry (including fuel type mapping and fire monitoring). First published in 1947 in the USA. This edition reprints the first
UK edition of 1964. Published to critical acclaim, the central
argument of this book is that the historical play must be studied
as a genre separate from tragedy and comedy. Just as there is in
Shakespearean tragedies a dominant ethical pattern of passion
opposed to reason, so there is in the history plays a dominant
political pattern characteristic of the political philosophy of the
age. From the 'troublesome reign' of King John to the 'tragical
doings' of Richard III, Shakespeare wove the events of English
history into plots of universal interest.

This brief presents information on occupational injuries from
electric shock and arc flash events through a review of literature,
electrical incident data, and similar sources. It includes
pertinent information such as the nature of the incident, adherence
to safety requirements, use of appropriate personal protective
equipment (PPE), and extent of injury. Chapters address arc flash
and shock hazards, and the need for empirical incident data on the
actual hazards that may be experienced when equipment faults or
adverse electrical events occur. Certain tasks where the risk of an
arc flash or shock hazard may be lower, such as normal operation of
properly installed and maintained equipment, may not require the
use of any special PPE. Some of this risk reduction is based on
anecdotal data, and the brief details why future research
challenges will need more empirical incident data on the actual
hazards and associated injuries that may be experienced when
equipment faults or adverse electrical events occur. Designed for
professionals and researchers in fire protection engineering,
workplace electrical tasks, or workplace safety, this brief offers
a thorough overview of the trends in electrical injuries and the
costs related to those injuries.
This groundbreaking examination of death squads, which exist worldwide, provides a historical perspective of how governments use death squads and how the participation of non-state forces is an extreme instance of the "subcontracting" of tasks characteristic of modern states. Death squads are not simply a product of the Cold War, or of "weak" third-world nations, but are linked to a crisis of the modern state. This collection brings experts from around the world to look at death squads in places such as El Salvador, Weimar Germany, Bosnia, India, Indonesia, Brazil and South Africa.

Gone to Texas engagingly tells the story of the Lone Star State,
from the arrival of humans in the Panhandle more than 12,000 years
ago to the second decade of the twenty-first century. Focusing on
the state's successive waves of immigrants, the book offers an
inclusive view of the vast array of Texans, who often in conflict
with each other and always in struggle with the land, created a
history and idea of Texas.
Academics, policy-makers and practitioners from Africa and beyond
document new ways of thinking about issues concerning governance
and revenue flows in mining activities in Ghana, Mali and the
Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Immortalized through their exploits at the battle of Thermopylae
under the legendary Leonidas, as well as countless other victories
throughout the classical period, the Spartans were some of the best
trained, organized, most feared and lethal warriors of the ancient
world. This small state, known to the Ancient Greeks as Lakedaimon,
situated in the southern Argolid developed one of the most
successful military forces of the Ancient World. Their unique
society, where serfs (helots) and non-citizen labourers (perioikoi)
left the pure-bred men of Sparta free to concentrate all their
energies on warfare. Forbidden from engaging in any form of manual
labour, these Spartan warriors were trained from an early age in a
brutal regime that gave them the necessary discipline and endurance
to withstand the pressures of phalanx warfare and endure all manner
of hardships on campaign.
This title will describe all aspect of the Spartan warriors life,
from the earliest days of his training through his life in peace
and war culminating in the battlefield experiences of these feared
combatants. The Spartans saw widespread combat throughout the
Peloponnese and beyond during the Greek and Persian and
Peloponnesian wars, becoming the supreme Greek power following
their eclipse of Athens until the battles of Leuctra and Mantineia
saw their star wane.
