For over a decade, Working Group 8 (Nursing) of the International Medical Informatics Association has sponsored, in conjunction with a host country, a triennial international symposium on nursing informatics. Each conference consists of a main conference and an invitational working conference following the main event. In 1991, the symposium was held in Melbourne, Australia and hosted by the Nursing Computer Group, Victoria and the Royal College of Nursing, Australia. Nine Pre-Conference workshops offered participants indepth exploration of a variety of information technology topics. The main conference attracted 700 participants from 19 countries and over 150 peer-reviewed papers. The invitational working conference was held at Whitehall in Sorrento, Victoria and involved the individual and collective work of 40 experts in nursing informatics from around the world. This group addressed the theme HEALTH CARE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: IMPLICATIONS FOR CHANGE. Health care organizations are faced with growing demand for information technology and must cope effectively with the processes and outcomes of its introduction. This book explores the factors affecting the survival of small populations. As the human impact on Earth expands, populations of many wild species are being squeezed into smaller and smaller habitats. As a consequence, they face an increasing threat of extinction. National and international conservation groups rush to add these populations, species and sub-species to their existing endangered and threatened lists. In nations with strong conservation laws, listing often triggers elaborate plans to rescue declining populations and restore their habitats. The authors review these theoretical ideas, the existing data, and explore the question: how well do small and isolated populations actually perform? Their case study group is the song sparrows of Mandarte Island, British Columbia. This population is small enough and isolated enough so that all individuals can be uniquely marked and their survival and reproduction monitored over many generations. This is one of the strongest long-term ecological studies of a contained vertebrate population, now in its 31st year.
As a result of the Air Force's move to Two-Level Maintenance and a Lean Logistics environment, the Air Force transportation community must adapt current practices to meet new standards. In the past, Air Force transportation managers have relied on organic military airlift to move high priority international shipments. However, the reduced infrastructure, coupled with the move to Lean Logistics and Two-Level Maintenance, mandate an increasing reliance on commercial express transportation to meet critical mission requirements. Consequently, Air Force transportation managers are faced with determining which commercial carrier provides the best service to meet Air Force requirements to a particular international location. Currently, however, there is no Air Force guidance to help transportation managers make this carrier decision. This study will identify selection criteria important within commercial industry and identify commercial practices that can be benchmarked by the Air Force.The objective of this study is to provide recommendations to the Air Staff that will improve Air Force transportation support of Two-Level Maintenance and Lean Logistics requirements. The extensive literature review explored academic literature, commercial processes, and DOD and Air Force Lean Logistics requirements.
